Is This The Next Apple Vision Headset’s Battery Cable?

A leaker shared images of what they suggest is the battery cable for the next Apple Vision headset, which they claim is “graphite dark blue”.

The leaker, who goes by the handle Kosutami, has previously shared apparent images of other Apple prototype cables.

Now, Kosutami has shared images that they cryptically suggest show the battery cable for the next Apple Vision headset.

Apparent images of Apple Vision Pro 2’s battery cable.

If you’re confused about the Lightning-like connector seen in the first two images, the current Apple Vision Pro has a very similar, but wider, connector built in to its external battery. It can be removed using a paperclip or SIM removal tool, but the vast majority of users likely don’t even know it’s removable.

The other two images show the headset-side connector, which looks identical to the current Vision Pro’s headset-side connector bar the color.

The current Apple Vision Pro battery-side proprietary connector. Image from iFixit.

Kosutami describes the color as “graphite dark blue” to their eye, and claims that the frame of the headset itself is this color. A departure from the current Apple Vision Pro’s silver, this would allow the new headset to be immediately visually distinguished, something Apple has often found important for its new hardware designs.

Further, Kosutami claims that the upcoming headset features titanium in “a few” of the internal structures, which they say makes it noticeably thinner and lighter.

Quota: only the few of internal structures would use titanium to reduce weight, most of the outside would be still aluminum features midnight black like surface.

— Kosutami (@Kosutami_Ito) April 16, 2025

Kosutami speculates that the headset will be called Apple Vision Air, and this claim was widely reported as a leak itself. But speaking to UploadVR, they say this is only their own speculation, not based on any concrete information, bar the headset being notably lighter.

Apple Vision Pro 2 – Imminent?

That a leaker seemingly already has at least the battery cable, and perhaps the headset too, suggests that the next Apple Vision headset is very far along in development, backing up what we’ve heard from recent reports.

Apple Vision Pro Refresh With M5 Chip Could Enter Mass Production In Late 2025
Mass production of an Apple Vision Pro refresh with an M5 chip should start in late 2025, prominent supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims.
UploadVRDavid Heaney

Back in September, supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that mass production of a refreshed Apple Vision Pro with an M5 chipset was expected to begin in the second half of 2025. The M5 chip hasn’t yet been announced, but Apple claims M4 has a 50% more powerful CPU and 4 times more powerful GPU than M2, suggesting the M5 Vision Pro could deliver a phenomenal performance increase.

Earlier this month, a lone Chinese source claimed that mass production of Apple Vision Pro 2 has already begun.

And over the weekend, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple was “readying” a new Vision Pro, which he said will be both cheaper and lighter, addressing the two primary concerns of the current headset.

Gurman didn’t say exactly how much lighter the headset should be, nor did he give an estimated price.

Apple Vision Pro 2 Reportedly Cheaper & Lighter, Mac-Tethered Headset Coming Too
Apple Vision Pro 2 will be cheaper and lighter, not just a chip upgrade, and the company is working on a Mac-tethered headset too, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports.
UploadVRDavid Heaney

So if the rumors are to be believed, a new Apple Vision Pro is coming soon with a lighter, dark color design, the M5 chipset, and a cheaper price. But one or more of the reports could be mistaken, and Apple could change its potential product plans at any time.

We’ll keep a close eye on Apple in the coming months for any official hints of a new Vision headset.

Diablo vs. Darkest Dungeon: RPG devs on balancing punishment and power

It’s one of the oldest conversations in gaming. Do you play video games because you’re looking for a challenge and want to experience the thrill and satisfaction of overcoming obstacles? Or do you turn to games to feel empowered, for the escapist fantasy of possessing incredible abilities that are often unattainable in real life?

Nowhere is this question more relevant than in the role-playing game genre. The core of the genre is developing a character (or stable of characters) over time, watching their power grow and capabilities expand. Satisfying player power fantasies is at the heart of many RPGs, where you can watch your virtual avatar grow from an unknown serf clad in rags to a living god, wielding incredible power to dominate your enemies or redeem a broken world.

That said, the thrill of power is only really exciting when leavened with a little friction. Eventually, even being omnipotent gets old.

Gemini live video and screen sharing is now free for Android users

Google is now offering Gemini live video and screen sharing to just about every Android user who wants them — totally free. The announcement comes just a couple weeks after Google first rolled out the features. They have been available to all Pixel 9 and Samsung Galaxy S25 owners and through a Google One AI Premium plan for other Android users with the Gemini app. Now, Google says that “great feedback” has motivated the company “to bring it to more people.”

Gemini live video and screen share allows you to ask Gemini about anything on your screen or directly in front of you. For example, you can take a picture of an item of clothing and get info about its materials. You can also ask it about something you’ve found on the internet, like a word in a story that you’ve never heard before.

We’ve been hearing great feedback on Gemini Live with camera and screen share, so we decided to bring it to more people ✨

Starting today and over the coming weeks, we’re rolling it out to *all* @Android users with the Gemini app. Enjoy!

PS If you don’t have the app yet,… https://t.co/dTsxLZLxNI

— Google Gemini App (@GeminiApp) April 16, 2025

Google will be rolling the tools out over the coming weeks to all Androids that are compatible with the Gemini app. According to a Google spokesperson, this is all “Android devices with 2GB of RAM or more, running Android 10 and up.”

India’s IT Services Giants Hit With Steepest Growth Slowdown in Years

India’s three largest IT services companies are facing their steepest growth slowdown in years as corporations curtail large technology projects amid global economic uncertainty and geopolitical challenges. From a report: Infosys, the country’s second-largest IT services provider, on Thursday forecast revenue growth of just 0-3% for the fiscal year through March 2026, far below analysts’ expectations of 6.3%. The guidance follows a quarter where net income fell 12% to $823 million, though this exceeded analyst estimates of $780 million. The disappointing outlook echoes similar concerns from rivals Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro, as US President Donald Trump’s tariff policies add fresh headwinds to an industry already struggling with cautious client spending.

Climate change will make rice toxic, say researchers

Rice, the world’s most consumed grain, will become increasingly toxic as the atmosphere heats and as carbon dioxide emissions rise, potentially putting billions of people at risk of cancers and other diseases, according to new research published Wednesday in The Lancet.

Eaten every day by billions of people and grown across the globe, rice is arguably the planet’s most important staple crop, with half the world’s population relying on it for the majority of its food needs, especially in developing countries.

But the way rice is grown—mostly submerged in paddies—and its highly porous texture mean it can absorb unusually high levels of arsenic, a potent carcinogenic toxin that is especially dangerous for babies.

Crashes & Poor Performance Plague Early Reception of ‘Civilization VII’ for Quest 3

It’s been over a week since Sid Meier’s Civilization VII – VR (2025) launched on Quest 3, and although developer PlaySide Studios has issued a performance update following its April 9th release, players are still struggling with poor performance and crashes of the $60 VR port.

Developed by PlaySide Studios in partnership with original developer Firaxis Games, Civilization VII – VR brought the sprawling real-time strategy game to VR for the first time, including both solo and online multiplayer matches with other Quest 3 and 3S players.

Things didn’t go off without a hitch though when the game launched earlier this month, with many users initially reporting persistent stuttering issues when using the game’s war table both in virtual and mixed reality modes.

An update released on April 11th was aimed at fixing “some of the performance issues,” the studio said in a reply to a Horizon Store user review, although the game is still apparently not out of the woods just yet.

Some of the most recent user reviews mention continued issues with stuttering when playing in VR mode, although there are also now numerous reports of the game crashing both during gameplay and upon startup.

“We’re aware that some players are experiencing crashing with Civilization VII – VR and we’re currently investigating,” the studio said on Monday via its official Discord (invite link).

While Firaxis suggests contacting support, the tide of complaints hasn’t come to an end, garnering the Civ VII Quest 3 port an accumulative user rating of [2.8/5] on the Horizon Store. Worryingly, the game has only managed to attract around 200 user reviews at the time of this writing.

Firaxis says in a Discord news announcement it’s going to release more info “ASAP,” however with no update log available, or public roadmap of issues currently being fixed, there’s no telling what to expect and when. That said, it’s difficult to tell whether it’s entirely a VR-specific issue at this point.

Civilization VII has similarly received ‘Mixed’ user reviews of the non-VR version via Steam, some which stem from initial performance issues, and others based on expectations incumbent upon its $70 price tag. Others, such as PC Gamer’s Nick Evanson, found the non-VR’s late game too CPU intensive for many PC rigs shortly after it was released.

We’ve reached out to developer PlaySide Studios for comment on this issue, and will update as soon as we hear back.

The Google TV Streamer 4K drops to a record low of $79

Sure, it’s getting warmer outside but, if you ask me, there’s no reason that should get in the way of watching TV. With that in mind, we’re very excited to see that our favorite all-in-one streaming device is now on sale.

Right now, you can get the Google TV Streamer 4K for $79, down from $100 — a 21 percent discount. This deal is the lowest price we’ve seen since the device went on sale in October of last year. The low price is (unsurprisingly) available on Amazon, but is also the same if you purchase it directly from Google.

We gave the Google TV streamer 4K an 87 in our review thanks to features like its great interface that keeps everything organized and clear, even across different streaming sources. It also has a simple, easy-to-use remote and switches between content very quickly. However, it does require an HDMI cord (which is not included) and doesn’t work with Wi-Fi 6 or 6E.

Strava buys UK-based personalized running plan app Runna

Strava has exercised its right to expand. A bad pun, yes, but apt considering the exercise tracking app has purchased Runna, a UK-based company that provides its users personalized running plans and coaching. The deal proceeded for an undisclosed sum of money.

Strava reports that interest in running has grown significantly, with 43 percent of its members wanting to do a big race or event this year. “Running is booming worldwide — nearly 1 billion runs were recorded on Strava in 2024. Runna’s mission to give every runner a personalised plan to achieve their goal is a perfect fit,” Strava CEO Michael Martin stated. “Coming off Strava’s accelerated innovation and unprecedented growth last year, it was the right time to look for complementary businesses that could create even greater value for our users.” Last year, Strava launched features such as a family plan and night heat maps.

Runna launched in 2022, but has since grown to a team of 180 employees working on an app available in 180 countries. According to Martin, Strava and Runna will be kept as separate apps for the time being, with plans to expand the latter’s team and resources.

GeForce RTX 5060 Ti Listings Flood Ebay, Prices Will Make You Laugh Or Cry

GeForce RTX 5060 Ti Listings Flood Ebay, Prices Will Make You Laugh Or Cry
On paper, it’s hard to quibble with NVIDIA’s pricing on its newly minted GeForce RTX 5060 Ti (see our review), even with much of the uplift over last-gen coming from DLSS 4 with multi-frame generation. The 16GB model at a $429 MSRP is actually $70 less than the launch price of the previous generation GeForce RTX 4060 Ti, while the 8GB’s $379

Creating Spray-On Shoes (And Other Clothes)

Inspired by Flint’s spray-on shoes from Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs (I love the possibility of rain AND pasta), Youtuber Jlaservideo decided to develop his own spray-on shoes. The result is pretty impressive, and both water and fire-proof. He also makes some spray-on pants and shirts. Come on, no underwear? Of all the clothes I’d like to be able to spray on in an emergency, underwear is number one. I already live 95% of my life pantless and shirtless anyways.

The Developer Bringing PS VR2 Eye Tracking To PC Got HDR Partially Working Too

The same developer who got PlayStation VR2’s eye tracking working on PC now has HDR partially working too.

While PlayStation VR2 officially supports PC VR through Sony’s SteamVR driver, the headset currently lacks its standout features on PC, including eye tracking, HDR, headset rumble, and adaptive triggers, though the developer of Cactus Cowboy got the triggers working back in September.

Earlier this month a developer who goes by the handle whatdahopper managed to get PlayStation VR2’s eye tracking working on PC. They told UploadVR that they plan to release the solution as a free and open source mod of Sony’s official PS VR2 SteamVR driver called DriverEx, and they call their overall PS VR2 reverse engineering project PSVR2Toolbox.

Developer Gets PlayStation VR2 Eye Tracking Working On PC
A software engineer managed to get PlayStation VR2’s eye tracking working on PC, though they caution that it’s currently “extremely WIP” and lacks calibration.
UploadVRDavid Heaney

Now, whatdahopper says they got another standout PlayStation VR2 feature working, at least partially: high dynamic range (HDR).

I say “partially” because there are two core tenets of HDR: the wider color gamut, and the greater range of luminance. According to whatdahopper, while SteamVR supports 10-bit color depth, which enables the wider color gamut, it does not currently support PQ (perceptual quantizer), needed to enable the greater range of luminance.

Thus, for PlayStation VR2 to fully support HDR on PC, including a greater range of luminance, either Valve would need to add support for PQ in SteamVR, or someone would need to write a driver that connects to a different OpenXR runtime than SteamVR which does.

Further, even the 10-bit color depth that will be supported with whatdahopper’s DriverEx will require per-application support. Developers will need to specifically support HDR in their PC VR games.

Meta Research Suggests High Brightness HDR Key To VR’s Future
Meta research suggests VR’s most transformative gains in telepresence and visual realism may come from advances in display brightness and dynamic range. Speaking on Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth’s podcast, the company’s head of display systems research talked about the enormous gap in brightness between the 100 nits
UploadVRIan Hamilton

True HDR support, thus, will remain a standout exclusive feature of PlayStation VR2 on PS5 for the foreseeable future, and is also supported on Apple Vision Pro standalone.

Nike and Hyperice to release the Hyperboot warm-up footwear for athletes on May 17

Nike has teamed up with Hyperice, a company that specializes in products meant for muscle recovery and relaxation in athletes, to launch the Hyperboot. Originally introduced in the summer of 2024, the Hyperboot looks pretty much like a pair of chunky high-top shoes. The companies said it’s more than that, however, calling it a “heat and dynamic air-compression massage tool” that you can walk in.

It’s equipped with dual-air bladders with heating elements throughout its entire upper. The Hyperboot was designed to massage its wearer’s feet with sequential compression patterns designed to “drive heat deep into the muscle and tissue in the foot and ankle.” Apparently, that helps athletes feel like they’ve already warmed up before they even start their warm-up routine. It also helps them recover much faster. Nike and Hyperice have been testing the Hyperboot with help from athletes, one of whom was Sha’Carri Richardson, Olympic gold medalist for track and field, who said that the device allowed her to “start warming up and recovering while still being mobile.”

Wearers will be able to synchronize their boots with the press of a button to make sure they’re delivering compressions at the same time. They’ll also be able to choose from three levels of compression and three levels of heat. And for those wondering why the boots’ soles are so thick, it’s because that’s where the battery packs are located. They can power the footwear for one to one-and-a-half hours on maximum setting and up to eight hours in massage mode with no heat. It takes five to six hours to charge them.

The Hyperboot might look like a concept, but it’ll soon be something you can actually buy. It will be available from Nike’s and Hyperice’s websites, as well as from some of their retail partners, starting on May 17 in North America. They’re also planning to release it worldwide later this year.

Recteq debuts the X-Fire Pro dual-mode pellet grill that can sear at 1,250 degrees

Pellet grills are great for the “set it and forget it” style of low-and-slow cooking things like brisket, pork shoulders and other barbecue meats require. And most of them will get hot enough to sear a steak, although not all models offer some type of direct-flame grilling. Recteq thinks it has finally cracked the code with its new X-Fire Pro, a smart pellet grill that the company says will replace a gas grill thanks to a 1,250-degree Fahrenheit maximum temperature.

The X-Fire Pro has two separate modes for both of those styles of cooking: Grill Mode and Smoke Mode. The grill offers a temperature range of 225-1,250 degrees Fahrenheit, so it can do everything in between smoking and searing too. Adaptive Sear Control allows backyard cooks to adjust how much direct flame they want. Turn it all the way up to sear a steak or keep it at a lower level for “classic grilling.” And Grill Mode has low, medium and high temperature settings, so using it will feel familiar to anyone who has used a gas grill.

“This is a totally new grill concept for Recteq and the pellet grill category as a whole,” CEO Ralph Santana said in the X-Fire Pro announcement. “Our research indicated that while the majority of gas grillers enjoy their current grilling experience, they wish they could also cook low and slow. So, we challenged ourselves to replicate the hot, fast, open-lid convenience of gas while still delivering that additional control and versatility of pellet grill smoking.”

recteq's X-Fire Pro has Adaptive Sear Control so you can adjust how much flame is coming in contact with your food.
recteq

With 825 square inches of cooking space, Recteq says you’ll have enough capacity for 28 pork chops or 26 burgers, and that should be plenty of room for multiple chickens, briskets or pork shoulders. The hopper holds up to 20 pounds of pellets, which is enough fuel for up to 20 hours of use. Durable materials like stainless steel and cast iron were used for components like the barrel, heat deflector and grill grates.

The X-Fire Pro is also equipped with Recteq’s smart grilling tech, which includes precise PID temperature control for Smoke Mode and the ability to monitor temperatures from afar with Wi-Fi connectivity. This is done with the Recteq app, software that also allows you to make adjustments to the grill from your phone. The X-Fire Pro comes with two meat temperature probes, and those stats get beamed to the app as well.

The X-Fire Pro is available now from Recteq, Amazon and other retailers in the US for $1,550. The company is also selling a rotisserie spit rod add-on for $250. That price is comparable to Traeger’s new Woodridge Elite that comes with slightly more cooking space, enclosed storage and a side burner. That grill doesn’t have an open-lid mode though. Weber’s Searwood does, and the largest version of it clocks in at $1,199.
