Jeff Bezos Asks Who Should Be The Next James Bond After Franchise Producers Relinquish Creative Control

It’s been over four years since Daniel Craig’s final appearance as James Bond in No Time to Die and we still don’t know what the franchise’s future holds or who will take the reins next. That could all start changing fast. Amazon now has full creative control over the blockbuster spy series after hashing out a deal…

Twitch is Limiting Streamers To 100 hours of Highlights and Uploads

Twitch is planning to cull some of the content archived by streamers to save on storage costs. From a report: On Wednesday the streaming platform announced that it will introduce a 100-hour storage cap for Highlights and Uploads starting April 19th, warning that users will have their content automatically deleted until it falls below the limit.

Twitch says it’s doing this because “Highlights haven’t been very effective in driving discovery or engagement,” and it isn’t worth the cost of storing thousands of hours of such content. Twitch is owned by Amazon, a market-leading cloud storage provider — a detail that hasn’t gone unnoticed by streamers criticizing the decision.

Amazon is shutting down its third-party Android app store

The Amazon Appstore will no longer be available on Android as of August 20, 2025. After that date, apps from the digital storefront “are not guaranteed to operate” on Android hardware; however, they can continue to be used on devices like the Fire TV and Fire Tablets. The Coins program, Amazon’s virtual currency for some Appstore app and in-app purchases, will also end on that same date. Coins will no longer be available for purchase beginning today.

The Appstore was Amazon’s effort to get in on the app distribution game for Android. Third-party app stores have been a hot topic for the business world in recent years, with the owners of walled gardens insisting that everything is fair while the companies trying to get a share of the action for themselves insist that it’s not. There have been mixed moves to address the question in the US government, while regions such as the EU have taken more decisive steps to increase competition.

Apple, Lenovo lead losers in laptop repairability analysis

Apple and Lenovo had the lowest laptop repairability scores in an analysis of recently released devices from consumer advocacy group US Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) Education Fund. While Apple’s low marks are partially due the difficulty involved in disassembling MacBooks, Lenovo appears to be withholding information from shoppers deemed critical to right-to-repair legislation and accessibility.

The report, US PIRG’s fourth annual “Failing the Fix” [PDF], calculated repairability scores for PCs and smartphones from popular brands in the US. The report examines “the top 10 most recent devices from each brand that were available for sale directly from manufacturers in January 2025.” If a brand’s website didn’t allow people to sort by newest release, US PIRG picked devices by sorting “by ‘Bestselling’ or something similar,” per the report’s methodology section.

US PIRG’s analysis included finding each device’s French Repairability Index scores on PC makers’ French websites and on third-party retailer sites. US PIRG calculated PC makers’ grades by averaging “the total French score and the isolated disassembly score from each device.” It weighed disassembly scores more heavily because it believes “this better reflects what consumers think a repairability score indicates.” Next, the group subtracted half a point each for membership in TechNet or the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), industry groups that oppose right-to-repair legislation, and added a quarter point “for each piece of Right to Repair legislation supported by the testimony of the manufacturer in the last year.”

Elon Musk recommends that the International Space Station be deorbited ASAP

In a remarkable statement Thursday, SpaceX founder Elon Musk said the International Space Station should be deorbited “as soon as possible.”

This comment from Musk will surely set off a landmine in the global space community, with broad implications. And it appears to be no idle comment from Musk who, at times, indulges in deliberately provocative posts on the social media network X that he owns.

However, that does not seem to be the case here.

You can now sign up to be a contributor to Meta’s Community Notes feature

After announcing its plan to end third-party fact-checking in January 2025, Meta’s crowdsourced replacement is finally starting to take shape. You can now join a waitlist to be a Community Notes contributor on Facebook, Instagram and Threads when the feature rolls out in the coming months.

Contributors are expect to provide context via a note when a post on one of Meta’s platforms “might be inaccurate or confusing,” according to the company’s sign-up page. Community Notes will be able to be added to “most public content across Facebook, Instagram and Threads” and must be 500 characters or fewer. Any note is also subject to Meta’s Community Standards and the judgment of other contributors. Meta expects contributors to rate notes so that the correct context gets displayed under posts.

To sign-up, you need to be based in the US, be over the age of 18, have a Meta account that’s more than six months old and in good standing and have either a verified phone number or two-factor authentication. Meta says contributors will start to be taken off the waitlist once the Community Notes beta launches. The company hasn’t given a hard date for the launch, but does mention that Community Notes will be phased in “over the next few months.”

Meta started testing Community Notes on Threads a little over a month ago. The feature, in name and basic functionality, is inspired by X’s Community Notes, which originally launched in 2022 when the company was still known as Twitter. Community Notes and other crowdsourced pseudo-fact checks have been tested on Google platforms like YouTube and Search as well, and they all have the same general weakness. A crowdsourced answer doesn’t come with the same guarantee of accuracy as one provided by someone whose sole job it is to be an impartial fact-checker.

My Favorite Amazon Deal of the Day: The Ultimate Ears Megaboom 4

We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication.

I’ve been a fan of Ultimate Ears (UE) outdoor speakers since I first got the Megaboom 3 back in 2018, and I’m still using it as my personal go-to portable speaker. The Megaboom 4 is its newer version, which came out last year, but it’s already 32% off, bringing its price down to $135.44 (originally $199.99). This is the lowest price it has reached according to price-tracking tools, and it’s cheaper than the Megaboom 3.

UE is well-known in the portable speaker market for making some of the best outdoor speakers. Its Megaboom series is the brand’s flagship speaker, and the fourth reiteration of the speaker was long overdue. The upgrade brings USB-C fast charging, a longer battery life of up to 20 hours, a skip-back media control on its physical buttons, more sub-bass range, and a better sound with more balance.

Because of the way UE designs its speakers, you get 360-degree sound, which is ideal for outdoor use (but it sounds great indoors as well). This speaker, and like many in its lineup, floats on water and has a water- and dust-proof IP67 rating. The companion app lets you fully customize the EQ and connect your speaker to other UE speakers to create a stereo sound. The speaker itself already offers stereo, but since it’s a single speaker, it’ll be hard to notice.

Despite the upgrades, the Megaboom 4 doesn’t get as loud as its predecessor, maxing out around 83 dBs, and the audio quality will sound a bit compressed at those levels, but unless you like to blast your music, this won’t be much of an issue.

If you’re looking for a great portable speaker with modern tech, the Megaboom 4 will not disappoint, especially at this price.

Dune: Awakening will spice things up on May 20

A day after it was reported that Denis Villeneuve’s third Dune movie starts shooting this summer, developer Funcom announced that its open-world MMO Dune: Awakening arrives on May 20 for PC. You can even get a jump on your journey through Arrakis with a character creator that’s available today.

Dune: Awakening draws inspiration from Frank Herbert’s novels and the 2020s films. (Sorry, no speedo-clad Sting in this one.) However, it takes some detours from the established canon. In the game’s version of Dune’s world, the Fremen have vanished, Paul Atreides was never born and Lady Jessica obeyed the Bene Gesserit’s instructions to give birth to a girl. (In other words, she’s a total square.)

So, in addition to being a bit of a “What If?” version of the Duniverse, it gives the developers freedom to use familiar environments and characters without having to tread too closely to the lore of the books and films. Handy!

Funcom

Funcom says you start as a prisoner sent to Arrakis to investigate the Fremen’s disappearance. “Following in the footsteps of the mysterious desert tribe, you will learn the true meaning of desert power as you rise from a nameless survivor to becoming an agent of the Atreides or the Harkonnen,” the game blurb reads.

The character creator you can tinker with today lets you tweak your hero’s looks and choose their home planet, caste and mentor (Swordmaster, Bene Gesserit, Mentat or Trooper). True to Dune form, your protagonist will have to put their hand in the box and take the dreaded Gom Jabbar test. (Fortunately, your hand will be on a keyboard or controller, not inside a sci-fi torture test.) You can use your custom character when the full game launches.

The tool also includes a benchmark mode, so you’ll know whether you need to invest in new PC hardware to play the survival game when it arrives.

Dune: Awakening launches on May 20 on Steam. It costs $50, and pre-orders will open soon. The game is also coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, but there’s no release date for the console versions yet. You can check out the latest trailer below.

Six Easy and Cheap Ways to Upgrade Your Staircase

We may earn a commission from links on this page.

Many of us have stairs in our home that could use a bit of a makeover, either due to wear and tear over time or because they’re builder-grade basic and didn’t have much style to begin with. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money upgrading a space meant to simply get you from one floor to another, though, there are ways to jazz your existing stairs without spending a lot.

If you’re suddenly thinking that your boring stairs need a glow-up, here are some ways to accomplish that without cleaning out your bank account.

Paint

Paint is always the easiest and cheapest upgrade you can do, and that applies to your stairs as well. You can easily paint the risers a bold contrasting color that will transform even the most basic stairs into a design element. You can also grab a gallon of floor paint and transform the treads. Doing both together allows you to create a classic black and white look or get creative with a palette that complements the rest of the home’s design.

And don’t forget the railing, balustrades, and newel post—giving these a gleaming new coat of paint is an instant transformation that doesn’t break the bank.

Wallpaper or tile

Your risers offer an incredible design opportunity—they’re essentially tiny canvases that you can dress up in a variety of ways. Applying wallpaper to your risers can give your stairs a punch of color and pattern that will make them pop, and you can probably do the entire staircase with just one roll of paper—or buy some contact paper pieces designed just for this purpose. If you have some leftover tile from another project or a line on some cheap tile, you can also tile your risers just like you’d tile a backsplash, instantly giving them a finished, stylish look.

You’re not limited to the risers, either. You can wallpaper the wall, either covering it completely or creating a “skirtboard” effect that outlines the rise of the steps along the wall. Just bringing color and design into the space will class up your stairs.

Trim

Stair brackets are trim pieces that are attached to the exterior of the stairs, adding some dimension and design to the part of your stairs that people will be staring at when they’re not actively walking on them. They’re pretty easy to install (you can use construction glue if you’re not comfortable with a nail gun or hammering in trim nails) and instantly upgrade the look of the staircase.

You can also add trim to the staircase wall without splashing out. If you’re a decent carpenter, you can create and install a skirtboard along the wall, adding dimension and depth to your stair design. Alternatively (and much more easily) you can grab some stick-on wall trim and create a design on the wall to accent the stairs.

Lighting

Lighting can be a dramatic element in any space, but it’s extra dramatic on stairs—especially at night. Adding some simple stick-on lights to the wall close to the treads not only increases safety, it adds an artistic element, and rechargeable led strips under the lip of the treads turn your boring stairs into a focal point.

Key things to consider when choosing lights are the brightness and warmth of the lights—you want them to be bright enough to increase visibility, but not so bright that they’re distracting. The warmth level should be tailored as much as possible to the palette of your home’s other design features. This might require a bit of experimentation before you land on the perfect combination.

Runners

If your stairs are fine but could use a little nudge of style (and maybe a nudge of safety), adding a carpet runner down the center is an easy project that adds a pop of color and design while increasing the grip. Installing a runner is a pretty straightforward DIY job that shouldn’t take more than a few hours, but you can simplify the task by using stick-on carpet treads instead—not quite as dramatic, but they still add dimension and safety to your stairs.

If you go with a full runner, you can add stair rods pretty easily for an extra pop of design. Stair rods are a classic touch that also helps hold your runner in place so it doesn’t slip and pull over time, which can be both a safety issue and ugly as heck.

Tread caps

You can jazz up builder-basic treads without tearing them out or sanding and staining them by using tread caps. These are thin veneers that slip over your existing treads, instantly hiding defects and changing the whole look and feel of your stairs. This is a fairly easy DIY job, though you’ll need to cut the caps to fit your stairs.

Consoles Cringe As GTA V Gets Glorious Free PC Upgrades With Exclusive RT Features

Back in March of 2022, we reported on the then “next-gen” update for GTA V that brought massive tech upgrades to the game while also delivering a solid amount of new content for the Online mode. Even back then, we wondered when this update would come to PC, and theorized that it could be a year or more. It turns out it was actually three years,

HP Deliberately Adds 15 Minutes Waiting Time For Telephone Support Calls

HP will impose a minimum 15-minute wait time for consumer PC and printer support calls in five European countries, seeking to push customers toward digital channels, according to internal documents seen by The Register. The policy, implemented February 18, affects retail customers in Britain, Ireland, France, Germany and Italy. The outlet added that it anticipates “more countries could be added.”

There’s a new Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon coming to Nickelodeon

It’s been ten long years since Avatar: The Legend of Korra aired its final episode and over 15 years since Avatar: The Last Airbender bowed out. Now, finally, Nickelodeon has greenlit a sequel series and it sounds pretty awesome. Deadline reports that Avatar: Seven Havens will be a 2D animated 26-episode followup that chronicles the rise of the next Avatar after Korra.

Franchise creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are developing the series, so we know it’s in good hands. The plot sounds pretty dark. It seems the world has fallen into chaos following a cataclysmic event of some kind. The titular “seven havens” refer to a handful of small civilizations that have managed to weather the storm.

Also, the next Avatar will be a female Earthbender. In this world, however, the Avatar is reviled and seen as a harbinger of doom instead of a hero. That’s an interesting twist.

“This new incarnation of the Avatarverse is full of fantasy, mystery and a whole new cast of amazing characters. Get ready to take another epic and emotional adventure,” DiMartino and Konietzko said in a statement.

The premiere date and casting information will be released later in the year. We do know that the 26 episodes will be split into two books, or seasons, which is similar to how the original shows handled things. It remains to be seen if the series will cap out at 26 episodes or if that’s just the first two chapters. Personally, I wonder if any aged Korra characters will show up.

The announcement of Avatar: Seven Havens is just the latest news from the franchise. DiMartino and Konietzko are also working on a trilogy of animated movies, with the first one centering on an adult Aang and friends. That one hits theaters on January 30, 2026. Of course, the Netflix live-action adaptation of the original series still has two more seasons to go.

Open Source AI: Risks & Mitigation Strategies for Security Admins

Taking advantage of open-source AI’s benefits while mitigating potential associated risks is an ongoing struggle and balancing act for security admins. While leaders such as Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue highlight open-source AI’s ethical transparency and sustainability, other experts, including Geoffrey Hinton, caution against its misuse by bad actors.
