Fake Online Car Dealership Scams Are More Convincing Than People Think

For decades, the only way to buy a car was to physically go to a dealership. If that idea gives you an anxiety attack, you’re not alone, so it’s a relief to know that the industry is finally embracing online shopping—even Amazon has gotten in on the act, and about half the buyers in one survey shopped for their car online.

But just like anything else on the internet, buying a car online comes with the risk of fraud. Scammers are setting up entire fake online dealerships and ripping people off to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars. You might think you’re too savvy to get fleeces like that (who buys a $50,000 car sight unseen anyway?), but the risk is real. These fake online car dealership scams are fairly sophisticated and can be difficult to spot—it’s gotten so bad that some states, like Wisconsin, have issued official warnings about it.

How online car dealership scams work

At its core, the scam is pretty simple: A scammer sets up a fake dealership website. Sometimes it’s an entirely fictional dealer, and sometimes the scammers hijack a real dealership’s name and set up a fake site for it, often scraping the dealership’s legitimate website for graphics, text, and photos to make everything look legit. Sometimes they claim to sell classic cars, but just as often they pose as regular dealers.

Step two is to adjust all the pricing on the vehicles so they’re incredibly attractive to potential buyers. In the current economic environment, where cars—used and new—are majorly expensive, folks who stumble on an amazing deal are more likely to get sucked into the scammers’ sales funnel. The “dealer” will be very responsive to messages from marks, and will provide everything you would expect a legitimate car dealership to provide—including photos and documentation. It can be extremely difficult to tell that you’re not interacting with an actual car dealership.

The scam really kicks into gear when it comes time to make a down payment or negotiate a sale. Scam dealerships will usually require payment in unusual ways—typically via wire transfer—and then cease responding once they’ve got your money. A man in North Carolina lost $40,000 last year when he tried to buy a truck from a site claiming to sell “repossessed” vehicles at extremely low prices, while a California resident lost $24,000 to a fake online dealer when he thought he was buying a classic car. And this guy on Reddit apparently lost $55,000 to a sophisticated fake online dealer.

What to look for

The scam works for a few reasons: People are increasingly comfortable making large purchases online, the in-person car buying experience is kind of terrible, and it’s relatively easy to set up a website that looks exactly like a real car dealership.

If you’re thinking about buying a car online, there are a couple of things you should look for when considering an online dealership:

  • Check with your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles or Department of Transportation to see if it maintains a list of authorized car dealers in the state, and if the dealership you’re considering is on the list.

  • If it’s a local dealership, look up the phone number independently and contact them to ensure the website is legitimate.

  • Be wary of unusually low prices, an inability to physically inspect and test-drive the car, and an unusual payment process.

Buying a car online is convenient and less obnoxious than doing it in person—but it’s also a little more dangerous. A little extra due diligence can save you a lot of trouble.

Amazon Set To Launch First Operational Satellites For Project Kuiper Network

Amazon and United Launch Alliance will launch 27 full-scale satellites on April 9 as part of Amazon’s Project Kuiper, marking the company’s first major step toward building a global satellite internet network to rival SpaceX’s Starlink. GeekWire reports: ULA said the three-hour window for the Atlas V rocket’s liftoff from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station’s Space Launch Complex 41 in Florida is scheduled to open at noon ET (9 a.m. PT) that day. ULA is planning a live stream of launch coverage via its website starting about 20 minutes ahead of liftoff. Amazon said next week’s mission — known as Kuiper-1 or KA-1 (for Kuiper Atlas 1) — will put 27 Kuiper satellites into orbit at an altitude of 280 miles (450 kilometers).

ULA launched two prototype Kuiper satellites into orbit for testing in October 2023, but KA-1 will mark Amazon’s first full-scale launch of a batch of operational satellites designed to bring high-speed internet access to millions of people around the world. […] According to Amazon, the Kuiper satellite design has gone through significant upgrades since the prototypes were launched in 2023. Amazon’s primary manufacturing facility is in Kirkland, Wash., with some of the components produced at Project Kuiper’s headquarters in nearby Redmond.

The mission profile for KA-1 calls for deploying the satellites safely in orbit and establishing ground-to-space contact. The satellites would then use their electric propulsion systems to settle into their assigned orbits at an altitude of 392 miles (630 kilometers), under the management of Project Kuiper’s mission operations team in Redmond. Under the current terms of its license from the Federal Communications Commission, Amazon is due to launch 3,232 Kuiper satellites by 2029, with half of those satellites going into orbit by mid-2026.

Vibe Coded AI App Generates Recipes With Very Few Guardrails

An anonymous reader quotes a report from 404 Media: A “vibe coded” AI app developed by entrepreneur and Y Combinator group partner Tom Blomfield has generated recipes that gave users instruction on how to make “Cyanide Ice Cream,” “Thick White Cum Soup,” and “Uranium Bomb,” using those actual substances as ingredients. Vibe coding, in case you are unfamiliar, is the new practice where people, some with limited coding experience, rapidly develop software with AI assisted coding tools without overthinking how efficient the code is as long as it’s functional. This is how Blomfield said he made RecipeNinja.AI. […] The recipe for Cyanide Ice Cream was still live on RecipeNinja.AI at the time of writing, as are recipes for Platypus Milk Cream Soup, Werewolf Cream Glazing, Cholera-Inspired Chocolate Cake, and other nonsense. Other recipes for things people shouldn’t eat have been removed.

It also appears that Blomfield has introduced content moderation since users discovered they could generate dangerous or extremely stupid recipes. I wasn’t able to generate recipes for asbestos cake, bullet tacos, or glue pizza. I was able to generate a recipe for “very dry tacos,” which looks not very good but not dangerous. In a March 20 blog on his personal site, Blomfield explained that he’s a startup founder turned investor, and while he has experience with PHP and Ruby on Rails, he has not written a line of code professionally since 2015. “In my day job at Y Combinator, I’m around founders who are building amazing stuff with AI every day and I kept hearing about the advances in tools like Lovable, Cursor and Windsurf,” he wrote, referring to AI-assisted coding tools. “I love building stuff and I’ve always got a list of little apps I want to build if I had more free time.”

After playing around with them, he wrote, he decided to build RecipeNinja.AI, which can take a prompt as simple as “Lasagna,” and generate an image of the finished dish along with a step-by-stape recipe which can use ElevenLabs’s AI generated voice to narrate the instruction so the user doesn’t have to interact with a device with his tomato sauce-covered fingers. “I was pretty astonished that Windsurf managed to integrate both the OpenAI and Elevenlabs APIs without me doing very much at all,” Blomfield wrote. “After we had a couple of problems with the open AI Ruby library, it quickly fell back to a raw ruby HTTP client implementation, but I honestly didn’t care. As long as it worked, I didn’t really mind if it used 20 lines of code or two lines of code.” Having some kind of voice controlled recipe app sounds like a pretty good idea to me, and it’s impressive that Blomfield was able to get something up and running so fast given his limited coding experience. But the problem is that he also allowed users to generate their own recipes with seemingly very few guardrails on what kind of recipes are and are not allowed, and that the site kept those results and showed them to other users.

Amazon reportedly wants to buy TikTok now too

Amazon has reportedly joined the growing list of suitors angling to acquire TikTok as a new ban deadline approaches. According to The New York Times, the retailer has made a “last-minute bid” to buy the app, and has approached Vice President JD Vance and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick about the offer.

It’s not clear why Amazon is making an offer this late in the process. TikTok is currently facing an April 5 deadline to strike a deal, though President Donald Trump has said he would likely extend it if necessary. The Times reports that White House officials don’t seem to be “seriously” considering the longshot bid. Amazon declined to comment.

Amazon joins several other companies and investors that have proposed bids. The group includes YouTuber MrBeast (with backing from a group that includes Roblox CEO David Baszucki), Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian (who joined a group of investors known as “Project Liberty”) and Perplexity AI, which has proposed integrating the shortform video into its search engine.

Even with the deadline just days away, we still don’t know exactly when a decision will be made about TikTok’s future. Trump has said he wants to announce a deal before the Saturday deadline.

The official Switch 2 accessories include a camera, a GameCube controller and more

Nintendo just dropped a boatload of Switch 2 news, including the release date, price and a launch title or two. It also announced a bevy of accessories that’ll be available for the console on June 5. Let’s go over the most notable of these doodads.

For my money, the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is the highlight here. This was featured heavily in the company’s livestream, as the Switch 2 will allow for in-game video chat. This is thanks to the magical “C” button on the right Joy-Con controller. The camera will also shrink down your head to use as a live avatar in certain games. It costs $50.

It wouldn’t be a Nintendo console without a pro controller. The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller will cost $80, but it includes the aforementioned “C” button, a screen capture button, an audio jack and HD rumble 2. It also allows for motion controls and Amiibo functionality. The GL/GR buttons can be mapped to suit different playstyles.

The company also announced a dedicated GameCube controller for use with Nintendo Online. It comes in iconic purple and also includes a “C” button. It charges via USB-C so you won’t burn through AA batteries like Wall-E or something. We don’t have a price on this yet, but Nintendo did say it’s launching with the console. We do know, however, that it’s only available to Nintendo Online subscribers.

The Switch 2 is launching with a new Mario Kart game, so you know what that means. The Joy-Con wheel controllers are back. The Joy-Con 2 Wheel ships in a two-pack, which costs $20. The set includes one blue wheel and one red wheel.

There are two official carrying cases. There’s one just for the console, for handheld mode, that costs $35. There’s also a much larger one that holds everything, including the console, dock, cables and game cards. That one costs $80.

Those are the most interesting items, but Nintendo also announced the usual replacement components. An AC adapter costs $30, while a dock set costs $110. A pair of Joy-Cons will set you back $90 and replacement straps cost $13.

Claude’s new Learning mode will prompt students to answer questions on their own

According to a recent Digital Education Council survey, as many as 86 percent of university students globally use artificial intelligence to assist with their coursework. It’s a staggering statistic that’s likely to have far-reaching consequences for years to come. So it’s not surprising to see a company like Anthropic announce Claude for Education, an initiative it says will equip universities to “play a key role in actively shaping AI’s role in society.”

At the heart of Claude for Education is a new Learning mode that changes how Anthropic’s chatbot interacts with users. With the feature engaged, Claude will attempt to guide students to a solution, rather than providing an answer outright, when asked a question. It will also employ the Socratic method in conversations, asking questions like “What evidence supports your conclusion?” as a way to guide users to understanding. All of this is powered by 3.7 Sonnet, Anthropic’s new hybrid reasoning model, and tied to Claude’s Projects feature, which gives you a way to organize your chats around specific topics.

Claude for Education is available to all Pro users with an .edu email address. Additionally, Anthropic is partnering with Northeastern University, the London School of Economics and Political Science as well as Champlain College to make Claude available to all students at those institutions.

At the same time, the company is launching two new programs. The first, Claude Campus Ambassadors, gives students the chance to work directly with Anthropic to launch educational initiatives at their school. The second, meanwhile, will see Anthropic award API credits to students working on projects involving Claude. Separately, the company says it will work with Instructure, the company behind the Canvas learning software, to increase access to tools universities are using to integrate AI into their teaching.

Nintendo is prioritizing Switch Online subscribers in its Switch 2 pre-orders

It’s almost time to pre-order the Nintendo Switch 2, now that we finally know how much it’ll cost, when it comes out, some of the games it’s getting, and the fact that you can use the new Joy-Con as a mouse, even on top of your pants. The Nintendo Switch 2 costs $450, it comes out on June 5, and pre-orders are set to go live on Wednesday, April 9. If you’re pre-ordering from a third-party retailer, your best bet is to make an extra cup of coffee that morning and get your clicking fingers ready — an exact time for pre-orders to activate hasn’t been announced yet, but it’ll likely be around 9AM ET, as these things often are.

If you’re ordering directly from Nintendo, things will work a little differently.

Nintendo’s US and Canada purchasing site asks interested customers to register to receive an emailed invitation to order the Switch 2. These invites will start going out on May 8, giving each recipient 72 hours to complete their purchase. The fine print clarifies that invites will be sent first to people who meet the following criteria as of April 2, 2025:

  • They’ve purchased any Nintendo Switch Online membership

  • They’ve had any paid NSO membership for a minimum of 12 months

  • They’ve opted in to share gameplay data and have logged at least 50 hours of total play time

Registrants who fit these criteria will be included in the priority group and receive email invites in the initial batches. All other hopeful customers will get in line on a first-come, first-served basis behind them. The UK pre-order guidelines are similar.

On the negative side, this means folks who have opted out of Nintendo’s data-sharing program or never used NSO will be lumped in with the non-priority group, even if they’ve played their Switch every day for the past eight years. This also makes it harder for non-playing people to pre-order a Switch 2 from Nintendo as a surprise for a friend or family member. That’s a bummer.

On the positive side, this seems to be Nintendo’s attempt to thwart scalpers, and it should be an effective roadblock. It’ll simply be harder for profit hunters to receive the initial batch of Switch 2 consoles directly from Nintendo, which should curtail the influx of price-jacked resales — at least a little bit, and at least for a little while.

On the most positive side, this is a nice, unexpected benefit for people with a track record of actually playing the Switch. Sure, the benefit is simply enabling them to more easily spend their money on Nintendo products, but as far as capitalistic ploys go, this one’s pretty kind.

That said, retailers including Gamestop, Walmart and Best Buy won’t have these restrictions on pre-orders, so things should operate as usual there. This means you won’t have to prove you’re a Real Gamer in order to pre-order a Switch 2 from a third-party store, but neither will the scalpers.

Ooni debuts Koda 2 and Koda 2 Pro pizza ovens with new burners and Bluetooth smarts

Last spring, Ooni debuted the dual-zone Koda 2 Max outdoor oven that can cook lots of things, including pizzas up to 20 inches. Now the company is expanding the gas-powered Koda line with the new Koda 2 and Koda 2 Pro. Like the Max, these two models feature Ooni’s latest burners, improved heat efficiency, a more resilient stone and compatibility with the Ooni Connect Digital Temperature Hub.

The Koda 2 Pro will be the midrange option in Ooni’s revamped gas-burning lineup. The oven can accommodate pizzas up to 18 inches thanks to 30 percent larger capacity than the Koda 16. The Koda 2 Pro offers a temperature range of 320-950 degrees Fahrenheit, which gives you the ability to sear, roast and bake in addition to the intense heat needed for pizzas. Twin gas burners are equipped with Ooni’s G2 tech for improved heat distribution thanks to a powerful tapered flame.

While you’re cooking, the Koda 2 Pro has a glass visor that helps keep heat inside while also giving you a clear view of your progress. The Ooni Connect Digital Temperature Hub puts a clearly visible display on the front of the oven, and its food probes can keep tabs on things like meat and fish. What’s more, this device has Bluetooth connectivity, which can send temperature updates to your phone. Session logs are stored in the Ooni app, where you’ll find recipes, tips and other useful info.

Ooni's Koda 2 offers the company's latest tech and design touches in a compact, portable pizza machine.
Ooni’s Koda 2
Ooni

The Koda 2 is the smallest option in Ooni’s overhauled gas-only line. It’s only 33 pounds, which the company says makes it portable enough for camping, tailgates and cookouts. And since the Koda 2 can also hit 950 degrees Fahrenheit, you can cook pro-level pizza in about a minute. This model is also equipped with the newest G2 burners for maximum efficiency and the 14-inch cooking area is larger than that of the previous comparable model, the Koda 12. What’s more, the Koda 2 is compatible with the Ooni Connect smart hub, but it doesn’t come in the box like the Koda 2 Pro and Koda 2 Max. The extra purchase will cost you $99.

The Koda 2 is available now for $449 while the Koda 2 Pro will be available May 1 for $749. Those prices are $150 more than the existing Koda 12 and Koda 16 models. And for the first time, Ooni ovens will be available in something other than the company’s trademark Foundry Black. You’ll also be able to choose a Slate Blue option with these new models.

Watch A Bus Driver Navigate One Of The Most Dangerous Mountainside Routes

This is a video from BBC Earth Explore highlighting the work life of bus driver Glorioso, who’s driven a treacherous mountainside route in the Peruvian Andes for the last 12 years. Damn, talk about nerves of steel! Me? I have nerves of store brand aluminum foil.

As the local saying goes, “It’s better to arrive a little late in this world… than early in the next”. And that’s the secret to a long career as a Peruvian bus driver, taking the mountains at their own pace.

Amen to that, I’m a huge believer in better late than dead. And an even bigger believer in better to just not go at all. Why risk it? The world is a terrifying place and I have everything I need in my rumpus room.

Keep going for the video, the real terrifying stuff at 1:47.

Amazon Said To Make a Bid To Buy TikTok in the US

An anonymous reader shares a report: Amazon has put in a last-minute bid to acquire all of TikTok, the popular video app, as it approaches an April deadline to be separated from its Chinese owner or face a ban in the United States, according to three people familiar with the bid.

Various parties who have been involved in the talks do not appear to be taking Amazon’s bid seriously, the people said. The bid came via an offer letter addressed to Vice President JD Vance and Howard Lutnick, the commerce secretary, according to a person briefed on the matter. Amazon’s bid highlights the 11th-hour maneuvering in Washington over TikTok’s ownership. Policymakers in both parties have expressed deep national security concerns over the app’s Chinese ownership, and passed a law last year to force a sale of TikTok that was set to take effect in January.

The Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 trailer has some serious retro vibes

There’s a trailer for the upcoming third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and it’s absolutely filled with goodies. It looks like there will be an episode soaked in the 1960s retro vibes of the original show, complete with period-accurate costumes and sets.

This is an episodic show, meaning that each episode is (more or less) standalone. The trailer shows off a few of the sci-fi concepts that will populate this third season. There’s a clip of the crew trying to connect dial-up phones to the ship (?!) and one that involves a murder mystery.

There are also two puzzling TNG-era additions. The famous Holodeck will be incorporated this season, or something that looks a whole lot like it. For the uninitiated, this is like VR but way, way better. Also, the trailer strongly indicates that Rhys Darby (Our Flag Means Death) will be playing a version of the prankster alien Q. It’s the finger snap that gives it away. We knew he was going to be in the show, but didn’t know who he’d be playing.

Now for some bad news. There’s no release date, other than summer. That could mean June. It could mean August. We’ll keep you updated when Paramount+ drops some new info.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a prequel series that follows Christopher Pike, the captain of the Enterprise prior to Kirk. However, the show has begun working in elements of the original iteration. Spock and Uhura have always been in it, but now Kirk, Bones and Scotty are starting to show up.

The Premier League will speed up offside calls with optical tracking tech starting next week

England’s top-tier soccer league will soon use optical tracking to automate portions of offside calls. The Premier League said on Tuesday it will adopt semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) in live matches beginning on April 12. The league said the new tech won’t change the accuracy of offside calls, but it will make them 30 seconds faster on average.

SAOT uses sensors from up to 30 cameras mounted high above the field in each Premier League stadium. They track the ball’s precise location and up to 10,000 surface data points for each player. The sports tech company Genius Sports explains that the tech “provides more efficient placement of the virtual offside line, using optical player tracking, and generates virtual graphics to ensure an enhanced in-stadium and broadcast experience for fans.”

Render of a Premier League stadium with cameras mounted around the upper bleachers.
Premier League

For the uninitiated, offsides is called in soccer when the attacking team’s lead player is closer to the opponent’s goal line than both the ball and the second-last defender. (The last defender is usually the goalie.) In recent years, the Premier League defaulted to the offsite Video Assistant Referee (VAR) team, which would determine the kick-point (the moment the lead attacker’s teammate passes it) and add calibrated lines with a crosshair for the attacker and defender’s locations at that time.

SAOT cuts a big chunk out of this (often lengthy) process by suggesting the kick-point and automatically creating offside lines based on the relevant defender and attacker’s positions. The VAR team still has a chance to review the algorithm’s suggestion before approving it.

At that point, a “decision visual” like the one below will roll for the fans in the stadium and those watching the broadcast at home to help clarify the call. The animation shows a white vertical wall representing the offside line, with a red (offside) or green (onside) line indicating whether the player crossed it.

Example of a decision visual from the Premier League's SAOT.
This SAOT decision visual shows the attacker’s right arm crossing the offside line.
Premier League

VAR will still be available as a backup for offside calls. “Most offside decisions will be quicker, but VAR will still have the option to draw crosshairs as a backup to the SAOT system if required,” the Premier League explained. “This process may be necessary in ‘edge cases’ where several players block the view of the ball or other players for the system’s cameras.”

This isn’t the first use of the tech. The Premier League has tested it in non-live matches and in live FA Cup games. The BBC notes that SAOT was also used in the 2022 World Cup, Serie A, La Liga and the Champions League. The Premier League’s version is a custom offshoot that Genius Sports developed with PGMOL (the referees’ organization) and the league itself. Unlike previous adaptations, the Premier League’s version doesn’t put a chip inside the ball.

Some original Switch games will run better on Switch 2; some won’t run at all

We’ve known for a few months now that the Nintendo Switch 2 will support backward compatibility for older Nintendo Switch games, and as of today’s presentation, we also know that some Switch games will get special Switch 2 Editions that add new features and support higher resolutions and other features.

Nintendo’s product pages for the Switch add more details, including the status of backward-compatibility testing for original Switch games and a small handful of first-party Switch games that will get “free updates” to enhance them for Switch 2.

First, some good news. There will be a second tier of updates for original Switch games that Nintendo says “may improve performance or add support for features such as GameShare in select games.” These won’t include the extra features or higher resolutions of Switch 2 Edition games, but they’ll be available for free, and they ought to improve playability. Nintendo lists a dozen first-party Switch games that will benefit from free Switch 2 updates:

‘Text Lens’ Can Copy Any Text From Your Mac’s Screen

There are many ways to copy text that can’t be easily selected, but few that are as simple and fast as Text Lens ($6)—a new Mac app by prolific developer Sindre Sorhus. Text Lens lets you select any part of your Mac’s screen and automatically copy all of the text from that part. This makes it easy to copy text from images, videos, scanned pages, settings menus, and other types of text that are otherwise impossible to grab.

Text Lens vs. Apple’s Live Text

Live Text, which is built into macOS, allows you to capture text from screenshots. While it’s good enough to get you started, it works only with Safari, Preview, and the built-in screenshot tool. You can’t select text from other apps without taking a screenshot first, which adds an extra step to the process. With tools such as Text Lens, you can instantly go into selection mode to capture and copy text. There’s no need to take a screenshot and then extract text.

Using Text Lens on your Mac

Text Lens' settings window open on a Mac.

Credit: Pranay Parab

Text Lens is simple and fast, but you should take a moment to configure it to make the most of the app. Once you’ve installed the app, click its menu bar icon and go to Settings. In the General tab, enable the following options:

  • Launch at login

  • Click menu bar icon to capture [you can right-click it to open the menu]

Next, go to the Shortcuts tab and record keyboard shortcuts for this app. You can even use Raycast’s Hyper Key to quickly create unique shortcuts. Once this is done, you’re ready to use the app. Try either its keyboard shortcut or click the menu bar icon to fire up the selector. Click and drag to cover the area you want to copy text from, and release the mouse when you’re done.

Text Lens will show a popover to confirm if the text has been copied to your clipboard. (In case it fails to copy, the same popover will tell you that no text was detected.) Once it’s successful, you can now paste the text in any app and carry on with your day. This app supports 18 languages including English, French, and Spanish.

Text Lens will also allow you to copy text from saved files on your Mac: You can import images, PDFs, or other files, and Text Lens will copy everything on the page. The app can also copy text from images in your clipboard.

While I was quite impressed with Text Lens’ accuracy with smaller bits of text, I imported a few larger batches of text to see how it works. For this, I compared it with the results from TextSniper ($11.99 for unlimited license) and Cleanshot X($29), two other Mac apps that let you copy text from images. I used one of my invoices to see how all three apps handle formatting challenges, and at the end of the quick test, TextSniper did the best job with the file.

Text Lens and Cleanshot X were able to capture text from the invoice fairly well, but they both included a few typos and messed up the formatting. Both these apps listed all the items and dates first, and lumped together the prices at the end. Meanwhile, TextSniper listed each item, its date, and the price together. It also had the fewest typos.

Still, for basic text copying, Text Lens does a fairly good job and is priced quite well. I hope that it gets better at copying large amounts of text in the future, but for copying a few lines here and there, it will do what you need it to do without much of a fuss.

RIP Val Kilmer: Celebrating cult classic Real Genius is now a moral imperative

Actor Val Kilmer—star of Top Gun, The Doors, and Batman Forever, among other roles—has died at the age of 65 of pneumonia, Deadline Hollywood reports.

Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2015 and while chemotherapy and two tracheotomies helped him defeat it, the procedures destroyed his voice. He spoke in a rasp or used an electric voice box for the remainder of his life and largely left acting. (He made a brief cameo in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, for which his voice was digitally altered.) The 2021 documentary Val, narrated by his son Jack Kilmer, followed his life and health struggles.

Kilmer had a reputation for being eccentric and difficult to work with, but he also had his champions, and his talent was undeniable. “While working with Val on Heat, I always marveled at the range, the brilliant variability within the powerful current of Val’s possessing and expressing character,” Michael Mann, who directed the actor in 1995’s Heat, told Deadline. “After so many years of Val battling disease and maintaining his spirit, this is tremendously sad news.”

All the Games Coming to the Nintendo Switch 2

The Nintendo Switch 2 is quite a bit different than the OG Switch: The Joy-Cons are beefier and connect via magnets; when docked, the console supports 4K 60fps output; and you can finally charge the console when playing in tabletop mode. But at the end of the day, what matters most about a new console like the Switch 2 is the games: If there’s nothing new to play, what’s the point?

Of course, Nintendo shared a number of Switch 2 exclusives during its big Direct on Wednesday. This isn’t a repeat of the Nintendo 3DS launch: There are games to play if you buy a Switch 2 on day one. But there are also a number of interesting titles coming soon and later this year. (There’s even a new From Soft title coming in 2026!)

Nintendo Switch 2 launches on June 5. While many of the games announced today do not launch alongside the console, there are also many that do—including Mario Kart World.

True to its name, this game offers an open-world Mario Kart experience. You can drive around the world, with friends, as you travel to different races. Not that every game needs to be open-world, but this one’s kind of a no brainer. It just seems like fun to drive around a giant Mario Kart map. You don’t even need to drive anywhere in particular: Nintendo encourages you to drive around leisurely, taking selfies as you do.

Of course, the core gameplay is still the same: Race other drivers around a track. But now, you can compete in races with up to 24 people at a time, and part of the competition is driving to the next race. There’s even a new “Knockout Tour,” where you race non-stop from one side of the map to the other. If you pass through a checkpoint in too low a position, you’re eliminated. Plus, you can bounce off walls like Mario in a platformer, grind on rails, and play as a cow, for some reason.

Here are the rest of the games that you can play on launch day:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour

  • Street Fighter 6

  • Split Fiction

  • Hogwarts Legacy

  • Hitman World of Assassination

  • Brave & Default Flying Fair (HD Remaster)

  • Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut

  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (Nintendo Switch Online)

  • Soulcalibur II (Nintendo Switch Online)

  • F-Zero GX (Nintendo Switch Online)

  • Deltarune 1 + 2 + 3 + 4

  • Civilizations VII

  • Survival Kids

  • Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition

  • Fortnite

  • Arcade Archives 2 RIDGE RACER

  • Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma

  • Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S

  • Nobunaga’s Ambition: Awakening Complete Edition

  • Fast Fusion

Upcoming Nintendo titles

There are a number of first-party games and upgrades Nintendo announced during its presentation that won’t be ready for launch on June 5.

Drag X Drive (Summer 2025)

This is an entirely new game for Nintendo. Drag X Drive is wheelchair basketball that uses the new mouse controls on the Switch 2 Joy-Cons. You can push both controllers forward, as your character pushes both wheels forward on their wheelchair. You can also swing the Joy-Con to throw a basket, similar to the experience with Wii Sports.

Donkey Kong Bananza (TBA)

After a number of remasters, Donkey Kong is finally getting a new game. This was the last announcement of the Direct, and was worth the wait: Bananza looks like Donkey Kong‘s version of Super Mario Odyssey—3D platforming in an open environment (though I’m not sure if it’s “open world.”) The biggest difference? You smash your way through just about anything you can see in the world.

Hyrule Warriors Age of Imprisonment (Winter 2025)

This is the third entry in the Hyrule Warriors series, and takes place prior to the events of Tears of the Kingdom. I won’t go into spoiler territory here, but you will get to play out the events of the Imprisoning War, and even get to play as Zelda.

Kirby Air Riders (2025)

It looks like we’re finally getting a sequel to 2003’s Kirby Air Ride. We don’t have a lot of details yet, other than seeing stars, bikes, and space ships as rideable vehicles. But Kirby Air Riders is directed by Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of both Kirby and Super Smash Bros., which bodes well.

Nintendo Switch 2 Editions

Like other consoles, Nintendo is now offering Switch 2 users upgraded versions of certain Switch 1 titles. These can include better visuals, faster performance, or new features that take advantage of the Switch 2’s controllers. These upgrades include:

  • Super Mario Part Jamboree + Jamboree TV (July 24, 2025)

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (TBA)

  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (TBA)

  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land + Star Crossed World (TBA)

  • Metroid Prime 4 Beyond (TBA)

  • Pokémon Legends ZA (TBA)

GameCube games

Nintendo Switch Online is finally adding support for GameCube games—but only for Nintendo Switch 2. (Why my 2017 Nintendo Switch is incompatible with games that ran on a system from 2001 is beyond me, but I digress.) In addition to the three aforementioned GameCube titles that will be available at launch, here’s what’s coming down the line, none of which have release dates yet:

  • Super Mario Sunshine

  • Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

  • Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness

  • Super Mario Strikes

  • Chibi-Robo

  • Luigi’s Mansion

  • Pokémon Colosseum

Third-party titles

95% of Code Will Be AI-Generated Within Five Years, Microsoft CTO Says

Microsoft Chief Technology Officer Kevin Scott has predicted that AI will generate 95% of code within five years. Speaking on the 20VC podcast, Scott said AI would not replace software engineers but transform their role. “It doesn’t mean that the AI is doing the software engineering job…. authorship is still going to be human,” Scott said.

According to Scott, developers will shift from writing code directly to guiding AI through prompts and instructions. “We go from being an input master (programming languages) to a prompt master (AI orchestrator),” he said. Scott said the current AI systems have significant memory limitations, making them “awfully transactional,” but predicted improvements within the next year.
