The iPhone 17 Pro has an aluminum case and vapor chamber cooling

While all eyes are likely on the iPhone Air this year, Apple is introducing several new features in the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max that should keep its more demanding users satisfied. The company says it went back to the drawing board to develop a new unibody aluminum case, a revamped vapor chamber cooling system and the biggest batteries ever put into iPhones. There’s also a completely revamped rear design, featuring a new horizontal camera array and a combination of glass and Apple’s Ceramic Shield along the bottom half. The latter update should increase overall durability, while also allowing for MagSafe wireless charging.

While all of Apple’s new iPhones are getting massive camera upgrades this year, the Pro rightfully remains the most capable with a new 48 megapixel telephoto lens. That joins 48MP wide and ultrawide sensors, as well as the new 18MP Center Stage front-facing camera. The telephoto camera can now shoot up to 8x “optical quality” zoom at 12MP and 4x at its full 48MP. As usual, Apple shot its iPhone announcement event with its new Pro phone, and it looked on-par with a true professional camera.

Under the hood is Apple’s new A19 Pro chip, a six-core CPU that offers “MacBook-level processing power,” according to the company. Strangely enough, the A19 Pro is also in the iPhone Air, but the iPhone 17 Pro’s vapor chamber cooling should allow for better sustained performance. (You can’t really push heat out quickly from a super-thin case, after all.)

Apple announces $799 iPhone 17 with bigger 6.3-inch always-on ProMotion screen, A19 chip

CUPERTINO, Calif.—September means iPhones, and as expected, Apple has taken the wraps off a new iPhone 17 at its event today. The iPhone 17 will start at $799 for a 256GB model. Pre-orders start Friday, and the phones will be available on September 19.

The updated OLED screen is the hero of the iPhone 17, bringing several features to the base iPhone that the iPhone Pro has enjoyed for years. The iPhone 17 steps up from a 6.1-inch to a 6.3-inch display, the same increase that came to the iPhone 16 Pro last year, and Apple has also added 120 Hz ProMotion support to the basic iPhone for the first time.

A 6.3-inch 120 Hz screen is the headlining feature of the new iPhone.

The refresh rate adjusts dynamically based on what you’re doing, and can go as low as 1 Hz in the low-power always-on display mode. Apple has also improved the scratch-resistance of the display with Ceramic Shield 2, which the company says is three times as scratch-resistant as the old screen. The screen can also hit 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.

The iPhone Air is Apple’s thinnest phone yet

The worst kept secret of 2025 is official. At its Awe Dropping event on Tuesday, Apple announced the iPhone Air, its thinnest iPhone to date.

Just how thin is the iPhone Air? At its thinnest point, the new model is 5.6mm thick. To put those measurements in perspective, the iPhone 16 Pro is 8.25mm thick, making the Air nearly 2mm thinner than Apple’s 2024 flagship. Prior to today, the 6.9mm thick iPhone 6 was the company’s thinnest smartphone to date. Since then, newer iPhones have been thicker to accommodate larger batteries, Face ID, multi-camera arrays and other components. The iPhone Air reverses that trend.

At the same time, Apple claims the Air is its most durable phone yet, with a frame made from recycled titanium. Additionally, the Air is encased in the company’s Ceramic Shield material, making it the first iPhone to offer a Ceramic Shield back.

Everything Apple revealed at the iPhone 17 launch event

With the start of September comes the promise of crisp, fall-like weather and, like clockwork, new iPhones. Apple’s “awe dropping” iPhone 17 event this year had execs showing off the latest iPhones from Cupertino and reminding folks of the changes Liquid Glass and iOS 26 will bring to their handsets in the coming week. New Apple Watches and AirPods are expected to be revealed as well. If you’re unable to watch the event live or follow along with Engadget’s liveblog, here are all of the biggest announcements coming out of Apple’s iPhone 17 event.

iPhone 17

The handsets in the standard iPhone 17 lineup have 6.3-inch, 120Hz displays with ProMotion and thinner borders. Apple’s touting improved durability thanks in part to Ceramic Shield 2, which has three times the scratch resistance as previous Ceramic Shield tech. The iPhone 17 is powered by the new A19 chipset, which is faster and more efficient than the previous processor thanks in part to an improved neural engine, a six-core CPU and a five-core GPU. Improvements in power efficiency will also get you eight additional hours of battery life on the iPhone 17.

As for the rear camera array, iPhone 17 has a 48MP main Fusion ultra wide camera and a 12MP telephoto lens. The selfie camera has been improved to be a “center stage” front camera, with better stabilization, a wider field of view and a new larger, square sensor that lets you take higher quality images and videos more easily. You also won’t have to rotate your iPhone when you want to take a photo or video in landscape mode.

AirPods Pro 3

Apple AirPods Pro 3
Apple

After three years, we now have a new version of the AirPods Pro. Apple’s latest premium earbuds, the AirPods Pro 3, look much the same as the Pro 2, but now they have heart rate monitoring thanks to new built-in biometric sensors. The Fitness app has new experiences to accompany this, including new workouts you can track while wearing just AirPods Pro 3 and carrying your iPhone.

Apple’s also touting improved audio with spatial listening, better active noise cancellation (four times as effective as the ANC in the original AirPods Pro) and foam-infused eartips. Live translation is another new feature which is, unsurprisingly, powered by Apple Intelligence. A new gesture will activate live translation when you’re wearing the new buds, and it will translate words spoken to you in another language to your preferred language. To reply, all you have to do is speak naturally in your own native language, and a translation will show up on your iPhone screen for the person you’re talking with to see. As far as battery life goes, they should get at least eight hours on a single charge.

AirPods Pro 3 are available to order today for $249, and will be widely available on September 19.

Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Apple Watch SE

Apple Watch Series 11
Apple

Apple announced the Apple Watch Series 11 as its thinnest and most durable smartwatch yet. It’s twice as scratch resistant as previous watches, and it now supports 5G for the first time thanks to a new modem and improved internal tech that make it more power efficient. The watch will also be able to monitor for hypertension, or high blood pressure, using improved algorithms and the built-in heart rate monitor. If the watch identifies patterns of hypertension, you’ll get an alert in the Health app. Series 11 watches will also now get up to 24 hours of battery life on a single charge, an improvement from the previous model.

It’s been two years since we got an updated Apple Watch Ultra, and that’s been remedied now with the Ultra 3. The new watch has a bigger, better display thanks to LTPO 3 technology. A big new feature is satellite connectivity, allowing you to stay connected wherever you may go and Emergency SOS is included with all Ultra 3 watches.

On the entry-level side of the spectrum, the Apple Watch SE is getting an update with a new always-on display, optional 5G, the improved S10 chip and support for gestures like Double Tab and wrist-flick. The Apple Watch SE will also get sleep apnea notifications and the new Sleep Score feature that’s also available on the Series 11 watches. However, it’s battery life remains the same as before — up to 18 hours — although you will now get fast-charging support.

Apple Watch Series 11 starts at $399; the Ultra 3 starts at $799 and the SE starts at $249. You can pre-order them today and they’ll be widely available on September 19.

Apple Watch Series 11 includes 5G and a hypertension tracking feature

Apple announced three new smartwatches at its “Awe Dropping” event today. Along with new iPhone 17 models, we now have the Apple Watch Series 11 as the rumors predicted. Engadget’s Cherlynn Low, Sam Rutherford and Billy Steele are on the ground at the event, so we’ll have hands-on coverage soon, followed by full reviews in a week or so. In the meantime, here’s everything we know about the newest Apple Watch.

Apple Watch Series 11

The keynote speech started off with dramatic testimonials of how the Apple Watch has helped people with their health and well being, alerting people to health issues and calling for help that saved their lives. And the new model will help identify hypertension.

Apple

As for what’s new this year, we heard from Stan Ng, VP of Apple Watch and health product marketing, who called the Series 11 the thinnest and most comfortable ever. The ionX glass now has a ceramic coating bonded at an atomic level making it two times more scratch-resistant than before.

Cellular connection has improved as well with 5G connectivity from most carriers at launch. The modem and antenna architecture should provide wider coverage while being more power efficient.

The wearable will ship with watchOS 26, which showcases the new Liquid Glass design — and the Apple Watch is getting a new watch face: Flow a “modern reinterpretation of a traditional regulator clock.”

New AirPods Pro 3 turn Apple’s earbuds into fitness tracker, universal translator

CUPERTINO,Calif.—Apple’s popular AirPods Pro in-ear headphones are getting a substantial upgrade. The new model, dubbed AirPods Pro 3, greatly improves active noise cancellation (ANC), performs live translations, and tracks your heart rate like a fitness wearable.

This will have to be subjected to third-party testing, but Apple made some intriguing claims about AirPods Pro 3’s performance during its iPhone and Apple Watch announcement even today. Namely, that they’ll have twice the ANC performance as AirPods Pro 2, and four times as much as the original AirPods Pro.

Additionally, Apple claims that voices will sound “more natural” in Transparency, the mode meant to allow nearby sounds to be heard even while you have the earbuds in. Those who’ve used earlier iterations of Transparency will likely note that voices can sound a little bit filtered, so that could be a nice-to-have improvement.

Apple Watch Ultra 3 has satellite connectivity and larger display

It’s been two years since Apple updated its rugged, ultra-premium Watch Ultra line, so it was long overdue for a replacement. Today, at its Awe Dropping event to launch the iPhone 17, the company has unveiled the Apple Watch Ultra 3. Apple was naturally delighted to show off a broad number of tweaks that, in aggregate, more than make up for that additional year delay. The most notable new feature is satellite communication, letting you stay in touch no matter where you are in the world.

Watch Ultra 3 is equipped with a 5G modem, matching the change to both the Watch Series 11 and SE Series 3. But those other timepieces do not get the built-in, two-way satellite communication offering Emergency SOS and Find My, letting you share your location if you’re in trouble in a remote area. With the Watch’s existing fall detection capabilities, it’ll also raise the alarm on your behalf if you’re not able to respond to it in time. Find My will share your location once every 15 minutes, and users can even send and receive texts and tapbacks with contacts via satellites.

The Watch Ultra 3’s new 3D printed case has had its display bezels shrunk to accommodate the “largest screen of any Apple Watch ever.” More importantly, the display technology has been tweaked (LTPO3) with wide-angle OLEDs to improve off-angle viewing. So, if you want to check the time without making it obvious that you’re checking the time, you won’t be faced with an illegible screen any more. LTPO3 also is efficient enough that even in always-on mode, you’ll be able to see a ticking seconds hand without activating the display.

An even more welcome improvement is in battery life, with Apple claiming the Ultra 3 will survive for 42 hours on a single charge. Put the device into Low Power Mode, and you will apparently be able to squeeze 72 hours of life out of it, which is unprecedented for an Apple Watch.

Naturally, you’ll also get all of the new bells and whistles announced with the Apple Watch Series 11. That includes hypertension alerts, keeping you aware of your heart health even if you don’t feel too bad at present.

Apple commonly updates its devices annually, but the Ultra 2 has been top of the list for two years. It’s likely that the bulk of the company’s design focus in the previous cycle was on the top down redesign of the regular Watch. After all, the Watch 10 got a thinner case and, in the 46mm version, a display slightly bigger than the Watch Ultra. Plus, those in the know say that the S10 system-on-chip found in the 2024 models was just a smaller version of the S9 found in the Ultra 2. Consequently, there was little reason to upgrade the Ultra to the newer package since it already had plenty of room inside its beefy, rugged case.

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is available to pre-order today for $799, with shipments beginning on September 19.

The iPhone 17 boasts a larger display with ProMotion support and a 120Hz refresh rate

In an absolute shocker, an early September Apple event included the official reveal of the iPhone 17. Who could have seen that coming? Arguably the biggest change this time around — in the most literal sense — concerns the display. At 6.3 inches, it’s larger than the iPhone 16’s 6.1-inch screen. Sorry to iPhone users with smaller hands and anyone else who is fed up of every phone becoming more of a phablet. The bezels are thinner too.

Not only is the iPhone 17 screen larger than the one on its predecessor, it boasts a ProMotion display with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz for smoother scrolling (you can perhaps thank my colleague Igor Bonifacic for making that happen). It’s an always-on screen and when you aren’t using your iPhone 17, the refresh rate dips to 1Hz to help optimize battery life. There’s also a seven-layer antiglare coating that’s designed to improve readability, and there’s a peak outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits.

No prizes for guessing that there’s an upgraded processor in the iPhone 17. An A19 processor with a 3nm design is powering this year’s base model. Apple says it has more memory bandwidth to bolster on-device large language model processing. The A19 has a five-core GPU as well. That, plus the 120Hz display, should bolster gaming on the iPhone 17.

Unfortunately, Apple is sticking with a dual camera system on the rear. Apple is calling this a Dual Fusion camera system. The main camera is a 48MP lens with a 26mm focal length. The secondary camera is a 2x MP telephoto lens which with a 52mm focal length.

Apple Watch SE 3 has an always-on display and the S10 chip

After three years, the Apple Watch SE is finally getting a refresh. The company showed off the Apple Watch SE 3, the latest version of its budget-friendly wearable during its big iPhone 17 event.

The third-generation Apple Watch SE is the first of Apple’s budget-friendly watches to come with an always-on display and support for 5G . Other notable upgrades include Apple’s S10 chip and new health-tracking features.

The third-gen Apple Watch SE adds sleep apnea notifications and wrist temperature sensing abilities. According to Apple, it also charges two times faster than the previous generation.

One aspect Apple isn’t changing is the price. The third-generation Apple Watch SE starts at $249 for the 40 mm version. It’s available for pre-order today and will ship September 19.

My 10 Favorite YouTube Channels for At-Home Yoga Classes

Did you know you can customize Google to filter out garbage? Take these steps for better search results, including adding my work at Lifehacker as a preferred source.

Although I love them, sometimes, I don’t want to go through the rigamarole of heading out to attend a structured yoga class—I just feel the urge to stretch and want to do it from the comfort and privacy of my home. You can get a great workout on your own as long as you have a plan. I’ve found YouTube really helpful in these instances: there are a ton of channels on there where trained yogis offer up guided routines that are easy to follow at home. Whatever amount of time or skill you have (or don’t have), here are the ones I recommend.

A few notes: What I look for in YouTube yoga is a mixture of accessibility and tolerability. If I want something really serious, I consider that motivation to go to an in-person class, where I can get guidance from someone in real life. I don’t pretend to be a yogi by any means, either. I’m someone who enjoys fitness classes in all forms and spicing up my activities by keeping them diverse. These are the best I’ve found for my novice skill level and needs. I’ve vetted these suggestions, but any time you’re looking for at-home instruction, make sure you’re finding credentialed instructors and focusing on high-quality content.

For straightforward yoga: Yoga With Tim

Yoga With Tim offers up 15-, 20-, 30- and 40-minute flows for free and you can subscribe to a paid tier that unlocks longer ones. He isn’t as—how do I put this?—infantilizing and woo-woo as some others out there, which is nice if you just don’t feel like drowning in baby talk. Many of his videos are for “all levels,” so you can enjoy a simple vinyasa flow without contorting or stressing yourself. I also enjoy that he’s always on a beach or a deck. It’s just nice to look at.

For quick flows: Boho Beautiful

Boho Beautiful offers a little more woo-woo, but it’s not cloying. The real benefit of these videos is their varied times. There are a bunch of 15- and 20-minute flows on the channel that help you feel energized, stretched, and joyful in a pinch.

They don’t release very often—maybe you’ll get one or two new ones a month—but the back catalog is extensive and stretches back years, so you’ll always find something without much hassle.

A gold standard: Yoga With Adriene

Yoga With Adriene is the most famous YouTube channel on this list, and she deserves it. The channel has over 13 million subscribers because it’s just that good. If anything, the absolute glut of options is the only downside: She has videos for everything from waking up to doing yoga “after a disaster.” It might take you some time to pick one, but once you do, she’s clear, direct, and inspiring, while still being soft-spoken, so you get the direction you need without any distractions. The “Yoga for Beginners” playlist is a great place to start if you’re not sure what to do, as she really does take the time to explain everything you need to know.

For specific fitness goals: Yoga With Kassandra

Sometimes, the goal of at-home yoga is to leisurely stretch and be mindful. Other times, you may want to lean more toward “workout” than “relaxing.” In those cases, try Yoga With Kassandra, where you can get videos that are aimed at increasing flexibility, core strength, endurance, and more. She offers up different kinds of yoga, from the vinyasa you’re probably familiar with to yin, which has you holding the poses a lot longer than usual.

I’ll add, too, that if you’re looking for more intense stretching or even a more focused workout, I’ve already rounded up some of my favorite stretching and Pilates coaches on YouTube.

When you’re ready for a challenge: Nicole Wild

On Nicole Wild‘s channel, you’ll find a bit more of a challenge. Some of her flows stretch on for an hour and you can choose intermediate and advanced ones, too. There’s nothing wrong with sticking with novice videos forever (and, honestly, since you’re alone with no teacher to help you if the situation gets sticky, it’s not the worst idea) but if you’re looking for something a little spicier, go here. I like the production of her videos because it’s very easy to see her and exactly what she’s doing, but she also gives clear directions that come in handy when you’re trying something new.

If you want to watch real teaching: Lululemon

Interestingly, Lululemon’s YouTube channel features free, full-length classes—and I do mean classes. A lot of the videos feature an instructor and one or two other people, so you can actually watch the pro guide them. It gives more of the sense that you’re really in a class, which could be helpful for you. Seeing someone correct another person’s poses or posture can help you recognize what’s wrong with yours and bring some of the benefits of in-person class to your living room.

If you’re a guy who feels self-conscious: Man Flow Yoga

As a spin teacher, I know from experience that, for some reason, a lot of men feel funny about taking group fitness classes or following along with an instructor. I do want to say you’re being a little silly, but I’m just one person fighting centuries of macho socialization, so if you’re a guy in that cohort, I’ll tell you about Man Flow Yoga instead. Here, Dean Pohlman offers up videos aimed directly at men, with a focus on strength and flexibility. He has routines for “complete beginners” and scales up to week-long programs that focus on certain skills or muscle groups, all while speaking directly, clearly, and evenly. There is no woo-woo to be found here. Who knows—after a few of his videos, you may be ready to go take a yoga class in real life with no fear.

For accessibility: Yoga With Zelinda

I love Yoga With Zelinda because the instructor talks the talk, walks the walk, and…well, stretches the stretches. She is all about making yoga accessible, but that’s not just some buzzword she tosses around. Highly trained and specialized, she’s spent a lot of time developing her craft and prioritizes teaching yoga traditionally, in ways that help anyone and everyone try it out. She releases new videos constantly and they include the standard challenges and routines other creators share, but she takes care to prioritize and highlight different body types. She also uploads informational and educational clips so any viewer can become more knowledgeable about the practice.

For a sense of warmth and belonging: Yoga With Bird

Like I said, you can practice yoga for all kinds of reasons, ranging from a desire to stretch to a desire to meet a certain fitness goal. But sometimes, you might want to tune in because you want some mental benefits or simply want to feel nice. Yoga With Bird is good for that. Just look at some of the video titles—”7 Min Stretch for Overall Health” and “Anytime Yoga to FEEL INCREDIBLE!” are among the recent uploads. The channel releases new videos consistently every few days. To be relaxed, welcomed, and seen, this is where you go.

To build toward a challenge: Charlie Follows

Charlie Follows has over 1,000 videos and the channel is great for anyone looking for something both playful and challenging. Video playlists are organized by time, so whether you have 10 minutes or 30, you can find what you need right away, and the goal of much of her content is to work progressively toward more challenging poses. That’s great if you want a challenge but are realistic enough to know you can’t just jump right into the hard stuff.

AirPods Pro 3 offer live translation and heart rate monitoring

Today’s Apple event isn’t just about iPhones and smartwatches. The company also announced the long-anticipated refresh of the AirPods Pro earbuds. The AirPods Pro 3 arrive a full three years after the company released the second-gen earbuds.

This is a serious upgrade with updated audio drivers and plenty of high-tech bells whistles, like active ANC and the ability to play spatial audio. Apple says these earbuds offer the best ANC of any in-ear headphones on the market.

Features list.
Apple

There’s a heart-rate sensor built right into the earbuds, which is pretty nifty for workouts. I’m loving this effort to stuff health sensors into earbuds. The battery life here is great, offering eight hours per charge. This shoots up to ten hours when using just the transparency algorithm.

There’s also a new live language translation feature, which is something that Pixel Buds have been doing for a while. This tool will also be available for other models like the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and the AirPods Pro 2. This Live Translation software will be available in English, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish at launch, with more languages coming by the end of the year.

As for the physical design, everything looks mostly the same, though they are a bit smaller to accomodate more ear canals. The company said it scanned more than 10,000 ears to make sure these new earbuds “the most secure and best-fitting AirPods ever.”

The new AirPods Pro 3 cost $249. Preorders are open right now, with earbuds shipping out on September 19.

The Five Worst Things to Do Immediately After Moving In

Did you know you can customize Google to filter out garbage? Take these steps for better search results, including adding Lifehacker as a preferred source for tech news.

Every year, tens of millions of Americans pack up all their stuff and shift it over to a new apartment or house—and the experience can be exciting, stressful, or both at once. One aspect of moving house that exacerbates the stress is the long to-do list of post-move chores that have to be done.

The secret to a less-stressful house move, however, is to actually delay some of these for a while. Slowing down and taking a more leisurely approach can have a wide range of benefits for you emotionally, financially, and physically. Here are the projects you should never do immediately after moving into your new house.

Unpacking

It’s almost instinct: The moment that first box is in your new place, you want to start unpacking stuff. You want access to your clothes and possessions, you want to start finding the perfect spot for everything you own and get straight to enjoying the new property. But there are several benefits to waiting to unpack most of your stuff:

  • Cleaning. Keeping everything boxed up means you can give the floors, walls, and crevices a thorough cleaning without having to move everything out of the way.

  • Planning. You probably haven’t spent much time in your new home, so you don’t have a “feel” for the place. Waiting to unpack lets you familiarize yourself with the space so you can decide where things should go more deliberately.

  • Relaxing. You simply don’t need all of your stuff on Day One. Setting aside most of the unpacking for later dates lets you relax and recharge after a stressful move.

The key here is planning your packing so your essentials are in a few specific boxes or other locations, so you can unpack what you absolutely need and leave the rest for a more relaxed schedule.

Plugging in new appliances

If you’re bringing appliances like a refrigerator or clothes washer with you to your new place, you probably want to hook everything up immediately—but you should hold off for a short time. Refrigerators and freezers need a little time to “settle”—the internal fluids (oil, coolant, etc.) can be sloshed around during transit, so waiting at least a few hours (a whole day is better) before plugging them in can prevent damage. Other appliances, like washing machines, might have had shipping bolts installed to stop the moving parts from being damaged, and forgetting to remove those safety measures can be disastrous, so taking a breath and thinking before you just plug everything in and hit the “on” button is a best practice—especially if you filled the oven with shoes in a desperation move you’ve completely forgotten.

Renovating

There is a short list of renovations you should probably consider doing before you move in: Painting, refinishing floors, and any essential repairs should be tackled before you’re actually living there. But if you didn’t purchase the house with a complete renovation plan in place—meaning you knew going in exactly how you’re going to remake the space and have a plan for where you’ll be living during the work—you should wait to do any other major renovation projects.

The reason is simple: You don’t know the house yet. You don’t know what will charm you, what aspects of its quirky layout or creaky old infrastructure you’ll love—or whether that feature you thought was so brilliant during the house tours will still seem brilliant after a few months. You don’t know how you’ll live in the space, frankly. Taking the time to live in the house for a while means the renovation plan you come up with will be customized to the space and how you use it, instead of an abstract or generic approach that may result in a brand-new space you don’t love.

Buying new furniture

Yes, you need someplace to sit in your new home—but don’t rush to fill the place with new pieces of furniture. Sticking with some of the beat-up old stuff from your prior home for a few weeks or months while you acclimate to the space will give you a clearer idea of how you actually want to use each room, and a better sense of scale and flow. This will allow you to choose furniture that fits both the physical space but also your new lifestyle in the new house.

Making major financial changes

Buying a house is a pretty huge financial transactions for most of us, requiring a lot of saving, planning, and budgeting. It’s not a great idea to immediately embark on more financial adventures for two big reasons:

  • Savings. If you’re like a lot of people, your savings are probably at a low ebb after cutting checks for everything from home inspections to surprise closing costs. Rebuilding those reserves should be a priority immediately after you move in.

  • Expenses. You have no idea what secret costs your new home has in store. Just because it got a passing grade from a home inspector doesn’t mean six things won’t break the moment you walk through the door, and you really don’t know what regular, routine maintenance and utilities use will cost you going forward until you’ve lived there for a little while.

  • Emergencies. Even if it’s a brand-new home or a recently renovated place, emergencies can always happen. Natural disasters and accidents don’t know that you recently vacuumed every last cent out of your checking account, so putting a pause on big-ticket spending so you can rebuild that emergency fund is a good idea.

“You are evil”: GirlsDoPorn ringleader Michael Pratt sentenced to 27 years

GirlsDoPorn owner Michael Pratt was sentenced to 27 years in prison yesterday after pleading guilty to sex trafficking charges. Pratt, who spent several years as a fugitive before being arrested in Spain and extradited to the US, pleaded guilty in June to a charge of sex trafficking by force, fraud, and coercion, and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking.

“Pratt, the owner and operator of GirlsDoPorn.com and GirlsDoToys.com, built a multimillion-dollar criminal empire by luring young women into pornography through lies, coercion, and manipulation, and then broadcasting their abuse to millions online,” the US Department of Justice said yesterday after the sentencing in US District Court for the Southern District of California.

The DOJ said Pratt “exploited hundreds of women,” and that 40 of them spoke at the sentencing hearing. Pratt, 42, faced a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison and a maximum of life in prison.

The FDA approves human trials for pig kidney transplants

Despite how it sounds, a xenotransplant isn’t something from the latest Alien movie. It’s an increasingly credible science: the transplantation of animal organs into humans. The field took one of its biggest leaps forward on Monday. The FDA approved the biotech company eGenesis to begin human trials of pig-to-human kidney transplants.

eGenesis provides pigs with CRISPR-modified genes. These genetic changes reduce the chances of organ rejection in human recipients. The FDA approved the company for Investigational New Drug (IND) Clearance for a three-phase study. Each stage will increase the number of patients if the results support moving forward.

Only those with end-stage kidney disease will be eligible. They’ll also need to be 50 or older, dialysis-dependent and on the kidney transplant waitlist. Around 86,000 people are currently on the kidney waitlist. The average wait time is three to five years at most centers. It can be longer for rarer blood types. Over 800,000 Americans have end-stage kidney disease.

eGenesis isn’t alone: United Therapeutics, another gene-edited pig developer, will soon begin enrolling people in a similar FDA-approved study.

“Advances in xenotransplantation are giving our community hope that new options may soon be available to those who need them most,” National Kidney Foundation CEO Kevin Longino wrote in a press release. “Patients expressed strong support for the advancement of clinical trials in our recent Xenotransplantation Voice of the Patient report. It is gratifying to know they’re being heard.”

The trial approval coincided with news of another successful xenotransplant. Bill Stewart, an otherwise healthy 54-year-old New Hampshire resident, received one of eGenesis’ pig kidneys on June 14. Before the operation, he received dialysis three times per week for over two years. His organ donor wait was longer than most due to his blood type. He was discharged from Massachusetts General Hospital on June 21 and no longer requires dialysis.

“There’s so few of us who have done this, and they’re writing the protocol as we go, so to speak,” Stewart told CNN. “But I’m feeling good.”

Tim Andrews, 67, received a pig kidney in January. Before his transplant, he required dialysis for over two years. Over seven months after the operation, he’s still dialysis-free. He’s currently the longest living recipient.

Earlier transplant recipients had significant underlying health problems. That limited scientists’ ability to conduct long-term tests. Trials with healthier patients will assess the durability of the organs over time.

The Renewed Bid To End Quarterly Earnings Reports

Public companies in the U.S. have dutifully shared financial results with investors every three months for the past 50-plus years. A new proposal hopes to change that. WSJ: The Long-Term Stock Exchange plans to petition the Securities and Exchange Commission to eliminate the quarterly earnings report requirement and instead give companies the option to share results twice a year, the group told The Wall Street Journal. It says the idea would save companies millions of dollars and allow executives to focus on long-term goals instead of worrying about hitting quarterly targets or prepping for earnings calls.

“We hear a lot about how it’s overly burdensome to be a public company,” said Bill Harts, the exchange’s chief executive officer. “This is an idea whose time has come.” President Trump briefly explored the idea during his first term, and current SEC leadership has signaled an interest in reducing regulation.

LTSE representatives recently discussed their proposal with SEC officials and left the meeting encouraged, people familiar with the matter said. LTSE is a stock-trading venue for companies focused on long-term goals. Its proposal would apply to all U.S. public companies, not just the few listed on its exchange. The group thinks such a move could revive the shrinking number of public companies, which some see as an existential threat for the American economy and investors.

Judge: Anthropic’s $1.5B settlement is being shoved “down the throat of authors”

At a hearing Monday, US District Judge William Alsup blasted a proposed $1.5 billion settlement over Anthropic’s rampant piracy of books to train AI.

The proposed settlement comes in a case where Anthropic could have owed more than $1 trillion in damages after Alsup certified a class that included up to 7 million claimants whose works were illegally downloaded by the AI company.

Instead, critics fear Anthropic will get off cheaply, striking a deal with authors suing that covers less than 500,000 works and paying a small fraction of its total valuation (currently $183 billion) to get away with the massive theft. Defector noted that the settlement doesn’t even require Anthropic to admit wrongdoing, while the company continues raising billions based on models trained on authors’ works. Most recently, Anthropic raised $13 billion in a funding round, making back about 10 times the proposed settlement amount after announcing the deal.

US Created 911,000 Fewer Jobs Than Previously Thought in the 12 Months Through March

U.S. jobs growth was much slower than previously reported, according to revised data released on Tuesday. From a report: The number of jobs created in the United States from April 2024 to March 2025 was revised down by 911,000 by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That would roughly amount to 76,000 fewer jobs created each month of the year up until March. The revision draws fresh attention to the weakening U.S. labor market, which added an average of only 29,000 jobs in each of the three most recent months.

The August jobs report showed that the U.S. added only 22,000 jobs that month and also revised June’s job growth down to a loss of 13,000 jobs. Those datapoints have led economists and some policymakers to conclude that the U.S. labor market is now at a standstill. “The jobs engine that has been integral to U.S. economic growth defying expectations for the past four years is stalling,” Sarah House, a senior economist at Wells Fargo, said in a note on Friday.
