Reddit will be included in Australia’s looming under-16 social media ban

Reddit won’t escape Australia’s child social media ban. The Guardian reports that Communications Minister Anika Wells announced Reddit’s addition on Wednesday. The nation’s law, which blocks children under 16 from major social media sites, is scheduled to go into effect on December 10.

Alongside Reddit, Wells said Australian streaming site Kick would also be included. They join the previously announced Facebook, X, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube and Instagram. Australia considers the list to be a starting point for the ban and won’t rule out adding more. Other companies under consideration are Discord, Twitch, GitHub and Roblox.

YouTube was initially excluded because it was considered an educational tool. But after protests from other companies on the list, Australia ultimately added it.

The ban passed in late 2024. The legislation puts the onus on the platforms, rather than parents, to police underage use. Companies that don’t take reasonable steps to prevent under-16 users from accessing their platforms can face penalties of up to AU$49.5 million (around $32 million).

“There’s a time and place for social media in Australia, but there’s not a place for predatory algorithms, harmful content and toxic popularity [meters] manipulating Australian children,” Wells said. “Online platforms can target children with chilling control. We are mandating they use that sophisticated technology to protect them.”

Windows 10 Update Incorrectly Tells Some Users They’ve Reached End-of-Life, Despite Having Extended Support

An anonymous reader shares a report: Microsoft officially ended mainstream support for Windows 10 last month, nudging users to upgrade to Windows 11. While that led to almost an overnight technological revolution in Japan, elsewhere, it has caused a lot of confusion. Certain versions of Windows 10, like Enterprise LTSC — and those enrolled in the ESU program — are still scheduled to receive security updates through at least 2027, but they’re starting to see out-of-support messages in Settings.

Various users over the past few days reported that they’re being subjected to end-of-life warnings in Windows, despite already qualifying for extended security updates through the ESU program. Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 and âIoT Enterprise are business-oriented editions of the OS, so they’re already supported up to 2032, but even they saw these incorrect messages. This widespread bug started to occur after the KB5066791 updates were pushed on October 14, 2025.

Microsoft has already acknowledged this mishap and said, “The message, ‘Your version of Windows has reached the end of support, might incorrectly display in the Windows Update Settings page,” confirming it as a mistake. The company has already released a cloud config fix that should remove the message, but you need to be connected to the internet for that, and a restart is also required.

US gives local police a face-scanning app similar to one used by ICE agents

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) launched a face-scanning app for local law enforcement agencies that assist the federal government with immigration-enforcement operations. The Mobile Identify app was released on the Google Play store on October 30.

“This app facilitates functions authorized by Section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA),” a US law that lets Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) delegate immigration-officer duties to state and local law enforcement, according to the Mobile Identify app’s description on the Google Play store. “Through a formal agreement, or Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), with DHS [Department of Homeland Security], participating agencies like your Sheriff’s Department can have designated officers who are trained, certified, and authorized to perform certain immigration enforcement functions, helping to identify and process individuals who may be in the country unlawfully. This tool is built to streamline those responsibilities securely and efficiently, directly in the field.”

A screenshot of the app on the Google Play listing shows it requires camera access “to take photos of subjects.” More information on how it works was reported today by 404 Media. “A source with knowledge of the app told 404 Media the app doesn’t return names after a face search. Instead it tells users to contact ICE and provides a reference number, or to not detain the person depending on the result,” the news report said.

Yes, ChatGPT Can Still Give You Legal and Health Advice

Responding to posts on social media claiming that ChatGPT will no longer offer legal or health advice, OpenAI is clarifying that “model behavior remains unchanged” and there is “not a new change to our terms.”

The clarification follows a since-deleted viral post from betting platform Kalshi, which claimed “JUST IN: ChatGPT will no longer provide health or legal advice.” Since then, concerned users have repeated the claim, while others have attempted to push back against it.

The confusion likely stems from an Oct. 29 update to OpenAI’s Usage policies, which appeared to add a stipulation that users cannot use OpenAI for “provision of tailored advice that requires a license, such as legal or medical advice, without appropriate involvement by a licensed professional.” While it would be easy to read that as meaning the AI will no longer give advice on those topics, the reality is a bit more complicated.

In fact, the previous usage policy already banned “activities that may significantly impair the safety, wellbeing, or rights of others,” with its first example of one such activity being “providing tailored legal, medical/health, or financial advice without review by a qualified professional.” However, this was hidden under a subsection targeted at those building with the OpenAI API, and so might have been missed by average consumers.

While the new usage policy keeps the same rules, the change was that it now merges them into one, unbroken list, meaning that while the rule is still targeted primarily towards developers and businesses, it is now more visible to everyone. Technically, this also makes it clearer that the rule applies to everyone and not just those using the OpenAI API to build an app, but average users are unlikely to see a change.

The important words here are “provision” and “providing.” The terms, as written, don’t necessarily ban the average person from getting legal and health advice from ChatGPT, but instead discourages developers and hospitals or law offices from using the chatbot to give specific advice to a client without first checking in with a licensed professional. As an average person doing background research, you’re unlikely to bump up against it, and there’s no language indicating a change to the chatbot’s functionality. In short, the update is intended as a rewording, not a change to rules, enforcement, or functionality.

This is backed up by OpenAI’s statement, which comes from the company’s head of health AI Karan Singhal, and says “ChatGPT has never been a substitute for professional advice, but it will continue to be a great resource to help people understand legal and health information.”

Despite this, responses to OpenAI’s statement denying a change to model behavior still claim to have seen more difficulty looking certain topics up, although it’s important to note that OpenAI’s release notes don’t indicate any new model developments having been made since the update to the company’s usage policies.

On an anecdotal note, I was able to get ChatGPT to offer me advice on how to fight a traffic ticket in court, as well as suggest brands for a supplement a user said the model refused to provide specific advice about following the new policy update.

Advice on colostrum brands offered by ChatGPT

Credit: Michelle Ehrhardt

While I cannot test every possible use case, the situation seems clear to me. Are you using ChatGPT or the OpenAI API to give others specifically tailored legal or health advice, without review by a licensed professional? If so, the same rules apply as before. If not, you’re unlikely to see a change in your results.

Meet Project Suncatcher, Google’s plan to put AI data centers in space

The tech industry is on a tear, building data centers for AI as quickly as they can buy up the land. The sky-high energy costs and logistical headaches of managing all those data centers have prompted interest in space-based infrastructure. Moguls like Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk have mused about putting GPUs in space, and now Google confirms it’s working on its own version of the technology. The company’s latest “moonshot” is known as Project Suncatcher, and if all goes as planned, Google hopes it will lead to scalable networks of orbiting TPUs.

The space around Earth has changed a lot in the last few years. A new generation of satellite constellations like Starlink has shown it’s feasible to relay Internet communication via orbital systems. Deploying high-performance AI accelerators in space along similar lines would be a boon to the industry’s never-ending build-out. Google notes that space may be “the best place to scale AI compute.”

Google’s vision for scalable orbiting data centers relies on solar-powered satellites with free-space optical links connecting the nodes into a distributed network. Naturally, there are numerous engineering challenges to solve before Project Suncatcher is real. As a reference, Google points to the long road from its first moonshot self-driving cars 15 years ago to the Waymo vehicles that are almost fully autonomous today.

Ferrari Aims at AI Generation With Crypto Auction For Le Mans Car

Ferrari is tapping into crypto markets and tech-rich youngsters with a planned new digital token that its wealthiest fans will be able to use in an auction for a Ferrari 499P, the endurance car that won three straight Le Mans titles. From a report: The plan for now is limited in scope and is an effort by the Italian sports car maker to tap into a trend among luxury brands seeking access to the growing wealth of younger tech entrepreneurs, as AI and data centres drive investment and markets around the world.

It comes after Ferrari, which is also developing its first electric car, began accepting Bitcoin, ethereum and USDC for car purchases in the United States in 2023 and extended the service to Europe last year. Ferrari is working with Italian fintech Conio to launch the ‘Token Ferrari 499P’ for members of its Hyperclub — which groups 100 of its most exclusive clients, with a passion for endurance races — to trade amongst themselves and bid on the racing model.

Fortnite Players Are Furious With Epic Over Sidekick Pets
A huge part of the draw of social online games like Fortnite is purchasing and showing off fun in-game cosmetic items, like character skins, accessories, animated emotes, and more. This Balatro charity wall calendar is exactly the energy I need going into 2026

Every year for as long as I can remember, my mother has gifted me a wall calendar featuring photos of my hometown. It’s a lovely thing, and I use it often to keep a note of all the concerts I have coming up. For 2026, though, I’m going to need something different: a Balatro wall calendar that features actor Ben Starr as the game’s mascot, Jimbo, in a variety of scenarios.

You’ll see Jimbo as Santa Claus and a vampire. There’s a photo of him in baseball garb and another of him eating ice cream. There’s even a shot of Jimbo with carefully placed bananas (a nod to the game’s handy banana cards) akin to that one shot of Mena Suvari in American Beauty. Starr is a logical pick for this as he previously dressed up as Jimbo to promote the game and accept a BAFTA on behalf of developer LocalThunk.

A new year is coming… time to shuffle off and try again!

The Balatro 2026 Wall Calendar is available now: https://t.co/EHlzJDOIIm pic.twitter.com/ugnooDdLoW

— Fangamer (@Fangamer) November 4, 2025

It’s silly, ever-so-slightly disturbing and — most importantly — all for a great cause, as Nintendo Life noted. LocalThunk and Balatro publisher PlayStack are donating all profits from sales of the calendar to Extra Life and SpecialEffect.

Extra Life is a program that benefits local children’s hospitals with the help of people who play games on charity livestreams. As for SpecialEffect, that charity helps physically disabled folks play games to the best of their abilities. You can buy the calendar now on FanGamer for $19 or €20. I’ll get over my hatred of clowns this one time.

Samsung is working on HDR10+ Advanced to take on Dolby Vision 2

Dolby unveiled Dolby Vision 2 in September, and Samsung has already fired back with its own upgrades to its image quality format. The company is a key player in the consortium behind the HDR10 and HDR10+ standards, and this week it announced that the group is developing a version called HDR10+ Advanced. Amazon Prime Video has already signed on to support this format when it becomes available.

Forbes reported on the six upgrades that are in the works with HDR10+ Advanced. The revised standard is expected to have an increased brightness range, genre-based options for tone mapping and picture processing, intelligent motion-smoothing options, a mode for cloud gaming, more zones for local tone mapping, and more advanced and accurate color performance. According to the publication, HDR10+ Advanced will likely debut on Samsung’s 2026 TV lineup. If that is the case, we can expect to hear more about HDR10+ Advanced in January at CES 2026 when the company usually unveils the year’s TV models.

Samsung is also collaborating with Google on an audio project that would be a counterpart to Dolby Atmos called Eclipsa Audio, but the details on that have been a little sparse since a brief announcement at CES 2025.

Apple’s Live Translation feature is finally coming to AirPods in the EU

After a delay, Apple has announced that it’s bringing its AI-powered Live Translation feature to the European Union in December. The expansion is notable, not only because Live Translation was a key selling point of the recently released AirPods Pro 3, but also because the company warned in September that complying with the EU’s Digital Markets Act could delay the feature.

When Live Translation becomes available in the EU on AirPods Pro 3, Pro 2 and AirPods 4 with ANC next month, the feature will automatically translate a speaker’s voice between English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional Mandarin), Japanese and Korean. Live Translation can also seamlessly translate between pairs of AirPods, intelligently lowering a speaker’s voice so the translation is easier to hear.

In September, Apple blamed a potential delay on “additional engineering” that was required to make sure translated conversations stay private, with the company specifically trying to “make sure [conversations] won’t be exposed to other companies or developers.” The wait for the feature should be worth it, though. In Engadget’s review of the AirPods Pro 3, we found Live Translation to be a handy addition to what was already a solid pair of wireless earbuds.

If you’re looking to try the feature before its official release, Apple Intelligence-capable iPhones running the iOS 26.2 developer beta can already use Live Translation on supported AirPods in the EU. A public beta of the software update will also be available soon.

Android Users Can Now Make Sora AI Slop Too

If you’re keeping up with generative AI, especially generative AI video models, then you’ve probably heard about Sora, OpenAI’s short-form AI video app. Even though the app has only been available for a bit over a month, you’ve probably seen Sora videos on your other feeds—whether you realized it or not.

Sora is capable of producing hyperrealistic AI videos that can be hard to distinguish from clips of actual reality. It doesn’t help that the app’s “cameo” feature lets you insert real people into these videos, leading to confusion and creating a risk of spreading misinformation. While the memes might be fun, if you ask me, there’s really not much good that can come out of it.

Up until now, Sora has been iOS-only. So while iPhone users in the U.S. have been able to check out the app for themselves, Android users have largely been left behind. If you have a Pixel, Galaxy, or any phone not made by Apple, you’ve had to turn elsewhere for your AI video viewing and generating needs. Any Sora apps you happened to see on Android marketplaces were total fakes.

That changes now. As of Tuesday, Nov. 4, Sora is now available to download for free on the Google Play Store. Sora announced the news on X Tuesday afternoon, revealing the app is ready to install for users in the U.S., Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. To complete the announcement, Sora included an AI-generated video of a reporter interviewing an alien about Sora landing on Android (no pun intended):

This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.

As the app makes its way to the Play Store, Android users will be walking into a slightly different situation than iOS users did when the app first launched. At first, free users were limited to 30 generations per day, but as of last week, you can now pay to generate even more videos. The app’s cameo feature is also experiencing a reckoning, as Sora has had to block users from making cameos with famous figures like Martin Luther King, Jr. At the same time, you’ll be able to generate cameos of your pets, as well as inanimate objects.

With a whole new platform of users hopping on the app, the quantity of hyperrealistic AI slop will only continue to grow. Sora does include a watermark on all video generations, but it’s not hard to find ways to remove it. As I’ve said for much of this year, the time has come to stop assuming what you see on your feeds is real. It’s now much safer to assume what you see is fake: If a video is real, its creator can do the work to prove its legitimacy.

Disclosure: Ziff Davis, Lifehacker’s parent company, in April filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.

Xbox Game Pass is adding COD: Black Ops 7 and ten other titles in November

Microsoft has announced its latest batch of games coming to Xbox Game Pass in November. Monthly subscribers have a lot to look forward to, including Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 on day one of its release.

Kicking off the release slate is Dead Static Drive on November 5. This indie survival-horror game takes players on a 1980s-style road trip across the country. Dead Static Drive will share its date with Sniper Elite: Resistance, a tactical third-person combat game with rich sniper mechanics that sports a co-op campaign for playing with friends.

The very next day will feature the real star of this month’s Game Pass releases, and no, I don’t mean COD. I’m talking about Egging On, the platformer where you play as a literal egg trying to escape your hen house. You’ll have to traverse harrowing obstacles and terrifying heights armed with little more than your fragile shell. Whiskerwood, a strategy and worldbuilding game where mice must build and manage colonies at the behest of a feline overlord, will be available on the same day.

The games keep coming over the following days with Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris and Pigeon Simulator available on November 11. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 drops on November 14 and will feature 16 6v6 maps and two 20v20 maps at launch.

Microsoft recently raised the price on the highest tier of the Xbox Game Pass subscription to $30 per month from $20 per month. That made Game Pass Ultimate 50 percent more expensive than previously. The tiers also underwent some rebranding as well, but the big thing to note is that you’ll need that $30/month Ultimate tier to play games on release day. This came after price increases in 2024 as well.

See the full list of Xbox Game Pass additions below, as well as a list of games leaving on November 15. The list also specifies which tier of Game Pass you’ll need for each title.

The Google Pixel 10 Is $200 Off Right Now

We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication.

Amazon is having a big Google sale right now while retailers are churning out early Black Friday deals. The standout deal is the Google Pixel 10, with the 128GB going for $599 (originally $799) and the 256GB for $699 (originally $899), both at record low prices, according to price-tracking tools.

The Google Pixel 10 is the latest in the series to be released this year, back in September. It’s the model under the Pixel 10 Pro, which is also at its lowest price right now and has a much faster chip. As Lifehacker’s Associate Tech Editor Michelle Ehrhardt says in her review, the Pixel 10 features a telephoto lens, brings the Pixelsnap (Google’s version of MagSafe), and has new AI features. However, the ultrawide lens gets weaker, and there are some problems with the chip for third-party apps (but it can be fixed).

This Pixel 10 has a lot of the same features you’ll find in the Pixel Pro for $150 less, making it a great budget option for those who don’t want or need all the fancy specs and features. It comes with a Google Tensor G5 chip, and the camera resolutions are 48MP, 13MP, and 10.8MP for the rear and 10.5MP for the front-facing one. You can expect about 24 hours of battery life, depending on your use.

One of my favorite things about Pixel phones is the ongoing support for many years. My Pixel 6A still gets all of the updates and tons of AI features that make the phone feel fresh many years later, with the latest ones dropping in September. With the Pixel 10, you’ll be getting a quality phone with software updates for a while (as long as seven years).

Ex-Cybersecurity Staff Charged With Moonlighting as Hackers

Three employees at cybersecurity companies spent years moonlighting as criminal hackers, launching their own ransomware attacks in a plot to extort millions of dollars from victims around the country, US prosecutors alleged in court filings. From a report: Ryan Clifford Goldberg, a former incident response supervisor at Sygnia Consulting, and Kevin Tyler Martin, who was a ransomware negotiator for DigitalMint, were charged with working together to hack five businesses starting in May 2023. In one instance, they, along with a third person, received a ransom payment of nearly $1.3 million worth of cryptocurrency from a medical device company based in Tampa, Florida, according to prosecutors.

The trio worked in a part of the cybersecurity industry that has sprung up to help companies negotiate with hackers to unfreeze their computer networks — sometimes by paying ransom. They are also accused of sharing their illicit profits with the developers of the type of ransomware they allegedly used on their victims. DigitalMint informed some customers about the charges last week, according to a document seen by Bloomberg News.

The other person who was allegedly involved in the scheme was also a ransomware negotiator at the same firm as Martin but wasn’t charged, according to court records. The person wasn’t identified in court records, nor were the companies that were the defendants’ former employers. Sygnia confirmed Goldberg had worked there. Martin last year gave a talk at a law school, which listed him as an employee of DigitalMint.

Google Maps is adding live lane guidance for the Polestar 4

Google is bringing live lane guidance to Google Maps in cars with the company’s built-in infotainment system, starting with the Polestar 4. Using the vehicle’s front-facing camera, Google Maps will be able to “see” the road just as the driver does. It will then create more detailed depictions of which lane a driver should be in and guide them using visual and audio cues.

Google says the new feature uses AI to analyze lane markings and road signs, which it then integrates in real time with Google Maps’ navigation system. Google paints a picture of fewer missed exits, as its navigation system reminds drivers in the left lane that their exit is coming up on the right side of the highway.

Details are scarce on where exactly this will function. In Google’s blog post announcing the feature, the company says it will expand live lane guidance to “more road types” in the future. We’ve reached out for clarification.

Live lane guidance with Google Maps will be rolling out on the Polestar 4 in the US and Sweden over the coming months. Google says it will expand to include more cars in partnership with other automakers.

OpenAI’s Sora app is now available on Android

Sora is now available to Android users on the Google Play Store. The iOS version of OpenAI’s text-to-video generative AI app is still only available in select markets and requires an invitation, but people are still extremely excited about making slop of their own; the app reportedly reached more than 1 million downloads in less than five days. And it didn’t take long for the company to land in hot water over users creating disrespectful clips of Martin Luther King Jr. and drawing censure from the Japanese government over copycats of famous manga and anime.

Those aren’t the only legal issues Sora has been skirting. OpenAI was sued by Cameo on claims of copyright infringement, and the very next day, the company released a feature called “cameo” for putting existing entities into Sora’s gen-AI videos. Whatever it winds up being named, some form of licensing personas looks like it will be part of OpenAI’s eventual monetization plans for Sora.

Pillars of Eternity to receive surprise turn-based mode in new update

Obsidian Entertainment, the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas and the recently released The Outer Worlds 2, has announced that it’s revisiting an RPG it released over a decade ago for a new update. Pillars of Eternity, a throwback isometric RPG, is receiving a turn-based mode as part of a new public beta on PC.

The new mode slows the game’s “real-time with pause” combat down, building on the optional turn-based mode the developer included with Pillars of Eternity: Deadfire, a sequel from 2018. The game’s director Josh Sawyer digs into the thinking behind the update in a trailer Obsidian released alongside the update announcement, but in brief, the mode attempts to faithfully adapt characters’ stats for turn-based combat, while making it easy to switch from real-time to turn-based modes on the fly.

Obsidian last returned to Eora, the setting of Pillars of Eternity, in the excellent Avowed from earlier this year. That game translated the series’ world and combat systems into a first-person RPG in the style of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Besides releasing The Outer Worlds 2, Obsidian is also actively developing Grounded 2 in early access.

Pillars of Eternity‘s turn-based mode will be available in a public beta for PC starting on November 5. Obsidian is looking for feedback on the new mode ahead of a planned update to the game at some point in the future.
