Meta is trying to make Facebook Marketplace a social shopping experience

Meta is revamping Facebook Marketplace in an effort to make it more appealing to “young adults” on the platform. The updates includes new collaborative shopping features, as well as AI-generated suggestions and “insights” about specific listings.

Now, would-be buyers can create Pinterest-like “collections” of Marketplace listings and invite friends to join. These collections can then be shared elsewhere on Facebook or on WhatsApp and Messenger. People will also be able to invite their Facebook friends to join messages with sellers, which Meta says will make it “easier to coordinate pickup, negotiate prices, and get answers to your questions.” Facebook is also making Marketplace listings themselves more social, with the ability to add comments and reactions. And while I’m not sure many Facebook users are clamoring for this, it seems like it could seriously up the meme potential for accounts like @insanefbmarketplace.

Meta will provide AI-generated insights about vehicles listed on Marketplace.

And, because it’s 2025 and AI is in just about every other part of Facebook, the company is also adding “AI insights” to listings. This will allow Meta AI to offer up suggestions for questions to ask sellers about the items they’ve listed. (Importantly, though, it looks like the default first-message suggestion is still a variation of “is this still available,” which I’ve always found to be one of the more annoying quirks of using Marketplace.) The company is also experimenting with vehicle-specific “insights” from Meta AI as car shopping is apparently one of the most popular use cases for Marketplace among younger adults.

All of the updates are part of Meta’s years-long mission to make Facebook cool — or, at least, useful — for “young adults.” And the company has long touted Marketplace as one of the more popular features among that demographic. The company has also experimented with local events, a friends-only feed and bringing back the Facebook “poke.”

Google adds Deep Research capabilities to NotebookLM

At the end of 2024, Google was one of the first companies to start offering a Deep Research tool through its AI chatbot. Now, nearly a full year later, the company is bringing that same capability to NotebookLM. Like its Gemini counterpart, the tool allows you to task the app with generating an extensive report on a single topic. When you queue a Deep Research task, NotebookLM will browse hundreds of websites on your behalf before it starts writing up its findings.

The entire process can take a few minutes, but at the end you’ll have a multi-page report to read. As the model works in the background, you can instruct it to seek out specific online sources. NotebookLM will also recommend articles, papers and websites that might be relevant to your query. Once its findings are ready, you can use any of NotebookLM’s capabilities to generate insights on the content.

With today’s update, Google is also adding to the variety of sources NotebookLM can access. Now the app can pull data from Google Sheets, Microsoft Word documents and PDFs you’ve uploaded to Google Drive. It’s now also possible to add Google Drive files just by copying over the URL. Google says all of today’s enhancements should roll out to users within a week. The timing of the update is fortuitous given the company recently gave NotebookLM the capability to generate flashcards and quizzes.

Valve’s trio of hardware announcements revived my Half-Life 3 fever dream

Yesterday, Valve announced three (3) hardware products: a Steam Machine console, an accompanying Steam Controller and the long-rumored Steam Frame VR headset. This hardware, along with the excellent Steam Deck, gives Valve a pretty comprehensive way to get people playing games wherever they want, on any sort of screen. And, of course, the games are what this is all about. Steam’s catalog is impossibly vast, encompassing every genre you can imagine — but there’s still one crucial title missing from the thousands of games available.

I am, of course, talking about Half-Life 3.

I swore back in 2017 that I’d stop beating this dead horse, but Valve sucked me back in with the utterly unexpected, excellent, VR-only Half-Life: Alyx prequel. At the very least, it was a sign that the Half-Life universe wasn’t dead and buried in Valve’s mind, despite the fact that it had lain dormant with an unresolved cliffhanger for more than a dozen years.

At the time, Valve indicated it was interested in moving forward with more games in the series, though I wouldn’t have been surprised if the company just dropped things again. But, a big push into hardware that is significantly more powerful than the Steam Deck feels like another perfect opportunity to make Half-Life 3 happen.

And there have actually been a few more concrete bread crumbs to follow over the last year or so indicating Valve might finally be returning to the Half-Life story. It started with the 20th anniversary of Half-Life 2, when Valve dropped a major update for the game. “Every map in Half-Life 2 has been looked over by Valve level designers to fix longstanding bugs, restore content and features lost to time, and improve the quality of a few things like lightmap resolution and fog,” the developer wrote. Along with some developer commentary, a documentary and the inclusion of the two episodic follow-up games, this was a pretty substantial update for such an old game.

At the end of last year, YouTuber Gabe Follower dropped some details on a potential Half-Life 3 coming soon. Follower had previously called the release of Counter-Strike 2, lending some credibility to his findings. To make a long story short, Follower claimed a Valve project internally titled “HLX” had reached the play-testing stage. That didn’t necessarily mean a launch was imminent, but at the very least the game was advancing in development.

Another less consequential but fun tidbit dropped around the same time: actor Michael Shapiro (who voiced the infamous G-Man in the Half-Life series) posted a New Years’ message where he spoke in the G-Man’s strange accent and said he’d see viewers in the year to come. Not coincidentally, he also did this in 2020 prior to the Half-Life: Alyx launch. The game had already been announced when he posted that message, but it’s still an intriguing tease.

The timing couldn’t be better, either. The Game Awards are less than a month away, and that extravaganza is about the biggest platform you could ask for if you’re announcing a big new title. Not that Valve really needs the stage — they could just drop a trailer on YouTube and the gaming world would take care of the rest.

But as a companion piece to the company’s renewed hardware ambitions? The synergy would be too good to pass up. After all, the Valve Index VR headset launched just a short time before Half-Life: Alyx was announced, and anyone who had purchased it got the game for free. A theoretical Half-Life 3 isn’t quite the same, as there’s no chance the game will require the official Steam Machine. But it would still make a heck of a launch title to help drive interest in the company’s new devices.

As for me, I’m not letting myself get too excited here. I remember in 2013, when Valve introduced the first Steam Machines initiative and its first attempt at a controller, I assumed it would be a perfect time to announce Half-Life 3. That clearly did not happen. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little bit hopeful this time around. There’s enough smoke to make me think that the fire is real; it’s hopefully time to wake up and smell the ashes.

Verizon To Cut About 15,000 Jobs

Verizon is planning to cut roughly 15,000 jobs, looking to reduce costs as it contends with increased competition for wireless service and home internet, according to WSJ, which cites people familiar with the matter. From the report: The cuts, the largest ever for the carrier, are set to take place in the next week, the people said. The majority of the reduction is expected to be made through layoffs. Verizon also plans to transition about 200 stores into franchised operations, which will shift employees off its payroll.

Verizon, the largest U.S. telecommunications provider by subscriber base, faces a fierce battle for both wireless and home internet customers. It has lost crucial postpaid phone subscribers for three consecutive quarters. Last month, Verizon named its lead independent director Daniel Schulman as its new chief executive officer. Schulman, a former CEO of PayPal and Virgin Mobile USA, has said he would aggressively reduce the company’s entire cost base and take steps to reverse the customer losses.

Valve says it’s still waiting for better chips to power Steam Deck 2

Yesterday’s announcement of new living room and VR hardware from Valve obviously has many gamers clamoring for any news of a more powerful version of the nearly 4-year-old Steam Deck. In a new interview with IGN, though, Valve Software Engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais says that portable gaming silicon still hasn’t advanced enough to justify brand-new benchmark hardware.

“The thing we’re making sure of is that it’s a worthwhile enough performance upgrade [for a Steam Deck 2] to make sense as a standalone product,” Griffais told IGN. “We’re not interested in getting to a point where it’s 20 or 30 or even 50 percent more performance at the same battery life. We want something a little bit more demarcated than that.”

“So we’ve been working back from silicon advancements and architectural improvements, and I think we have a pretty good idea of what the next version of Steam Deck is going to be, but right now there’s no offerings in that landscape, in the SoC [System on a Chip] landscape, that we think would truly be a next-gen performance Steam Deck,” Griffais continued.

Dbrand’s Companion Cube is the perfect partner for your future Steam Machine

Valve’s second attempt at a console-like gaming PC for your living room is hopefully going to be a triumph worthy of plenty of cake, with or without fun accessories. But if you really want to make the Steam Machine feel extra special when it arrives in early 2026, you’re going to want to dress it up in Dbrand’s Companion Cube skin.

A tribute to the iconic Weighted Companion Cube from Valve’s beloved Portal series, it’s such a fitting design that I sort of wonder if the company is kicking itself for not making something similar for its cube-shaped compact PC. Of course, putting your Steam Machine inside this will ensure it stands out from the other consoles occupying your TV unit, which is the opposite effect that the standard design is going to have. While it does have a customizable front plate and an LED light strip, the default all-black colorway could hardly be less attention-grabbing.

In case you missed yesterday’s announcement, the Steam Machine is a Linux-based mini PC that runs SteamOS and is designed to be plugged into your TV, like a console. Valve says it’s roughly six times more powerful than a Steam Deck and is capable of supporting 4K/60fps gaming with FSR. You can also use it to stream VR games to the new Stream Frame headset, while the Steam Controller, with its distinctive trackpads, allows you to play your Steam games wirelessly.

Given that we don’t yet have a release date or price for the Steam Machine, Dbrand’s accessory doesn’t have either of those yet either, but it is coming in 2026. And I’m fairly confident that isn’t a lie…

Fallout’s new season two trailer is filled with quick nods to the source material

We are about a month away from the premiere of Fallout season two on Prime Video. The streaming gods have blessed us with a beefy two-minute trailer that’s packed with “blink and you’ll miss it” Easter eggs and nods to the source material.

This is the first real-deal trailer for the upcoming season, though we did get a teaser back in August. It checks in on every major character from the first season and, of course, is absolutely littered with New Vegas stuff. The first batch of episodes ended with an acknowledgment that the show would be visiting the iconic location and this trailer further proves that.

There are new actors coming to the show, many of which are featured here. Justin Theroux is playing Mr. House, a fan favorite character from the games who was originally voiced by the late, great René Auberjonois. Kumail Nanjiani shows up, and so does Macaulay Culkin. Ron Perlman can also be heard speaking during the trailer, and he did all of the opening narrations for the Fallout games.

We have no idea what will happen this season, as the show is set in the Fallout universe but is telling its own story. The first season took the world by storm, given that nobody really expected it to be quite that good. The new batch of episodes begin on December 17, but this is a weekly release schedule. There will be no Netflix-style drop here.

Tracking the winds that have turned Mars into a planet of dust

Mars is cold, parched, and extremely dusty. Powerful gusts of wind kick up literal tons of reddish dust that often takes the form of whorls known as dust devils. These winds also shroud the planet in dust by lifting material from the surface and blowing it into the atmosphere (what little Mars has left of an atmosphere), sometimes creating dust storms that rage for days.

Researcher Valentin Bickel wanted to know just how intense winds can be on the red planet. Using data obtained by the Mars camera CaSSIS (Color and Stereo Surface Imaging System), the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, and stereo camera HRSC (High Resolution Stereo Camera) on board ESA orbiter Mars Express, he and his team used deep learning to analyze stereo images that were taken seconds apart at the same location. These images can track the motion of dust devils, and the researchers use them to infer how the winds behind the dust devils move and lift dust from the surface. That dust goes on to have a big influence on the Martian weather.

Bickel, of the Center for Space and Habitability at the University of Bern, noticed that the tumultuous Martian winds are even faster than previous observations had made them out to be. They carry more dust than was previously thought. “Our observations show that strong near-surface winds are abundant on Mars and play an important role in atmospheric dust sourcing, directly informing more accurate models of Mars’ atmosphere, weather, and climate,” the researchers said in a study recently published in Science Advances.

Reddit Cofounder Had a Bad Feeling About Giving Data To Sam Altman

Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian said he had serious doubts a decade ago about sharing the platform’s data with Sam Altman. Ohanian recounted on the “Brew Markets” podcast that between 2015 and 2016, Altman asked Reddit to let him “aggressively scrape” the site’s content. Altman had recently helped Reddit raise $50 million in a Series B round and was launching OpenAI as a nonprofit.

Ohanian described Altman as “very smart” and “incredibly cunning” but questioned whether he was “the most philanthropically minded guy.” The Reddit cofounder said he “felt in my bones” the company should refuse the request and debated internally about it against Steve Huffman. Ohanian said he “lost that debate.” Reddit and OpenAI announced a formal licensing deal in 2024.

What RCS Messaging Between iOS and Android Can and Can’t Do (Yet)

Apple brought RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging to the iPhone with iOS 18 last year, giving green-bubble users access to more features and functions. But what exactly is possible with RCS on the iPhone, and what is still exclusive to iMessage users? Are Android RCS users now fully integrated into chats in the iOS Messages app or not?

I’ll lay out exactly what you can do in RCS chats between iPhones and Android phones, and explain which features are still missing—and when you might be able to get them. If you’ve got contacts on other mobile platforms, this should help you understand more about what the experience is like from their end.

To use RCS, you must have a carrier that supports it (most now do). On an iPhone, open Settings, then choose Apps > Messages > RCS Messaging to enable it. In Google Messages on Android, tap your profile picture (top right), then choose Messages settings and RCS chats to turn on the feature.

RCS on iOS and Android: what you can do

Ever since iOS 18, RCS messaging has officially been supported in the iOS Messages app—specifically, via the RCS Universal Profile 2.4. This brings green bubble Android users closer to parity with iMessage users, though some features only work in one direction, and some features only work in one-to-one conversations and not group chats.

One notable upgrade is support for high-resolution photos and videos, which should work seamlessly across all your RCS-enabled conversations, with no more issues around compression or transfer. Web links look better as well, because you’ll get a proper preview shown on both Android and iOS, and you can share current locations too (though only as a static pin, not a live and updating one).

Web links now look much better between iOS and Android.

Typing indicators and read receipts are supported in both directions, assuming you’ve got them enabled on your devices. However, they don’t work in group chats—RCS users on Android can now join group chats, but the experience can be buggy based on reports, and you lose the typing indicators and the read receipts.

Emoji reactions are now supported, up to a point—but based on my testing, these only work from iPhone to Android. If you try and send an emoji reaction in the other direction, iPhone users will just get a separate text showing the emoji (it won’t appear as a bubble on top of the original message).

RCS on iOS and Android: what you can’t do (yet)

If you look at everything you can do in iMessage (with other iMessage users) and Google Messages (with other Android RCS users), you’ll realize there’s a long way to go when it comes to cross-platform support. For example, at the moment you can’t unsend messages, or reply inline in a thread, either from Android to iPhone or iPhone to Android.

You can edit messages, but only if you’re an Android user messaging an iPhone user—and with the caveat that the iPhone user gets two texts (the original message and the edited message, which rather defeats the point). The ability to edit messages on an iPhone simply doesn’t appear in an RCS conversation.

RCS editing
Message editing is something that doesn’t quite work yet.

Another missing feature is end-to-end encryption for your chats and files shared in them. Apple has promised that support for this in RCS conversations is on the way, though it hasn’t shown up yet—not even in iOS 26. This should give you pause when it comes to sharing sensitive information in these chats.

Full end-to-end encryption is part of the RCS Universal Profile 3.0, which Google is testing in beta and which Apple has yet to adopt. Once this next update finally makes its way to iPhones and Android devices, interoperability will be leveled up again—it should, in theory, bring with it full support for message editing, emoji reactions, and inline replies. Until then, it’s something of a half-baked implementation, especially for group chats.

Sony’s latest Horizon spin-off is an MMORPG for PC and mobile, but not PS5

An MMO based on Sony’s Horizon series is on the way. However, Horizon Steel Frontiers is not coming to PS5, at least not initially. It’s a mobile-first game that’s also coming to PC, in another example of Sony Interactive Entertainment expanding beyond its core PlayStation console business.

NCSoft, the MMO developer and publisher behind the likes of the Guild Wars series and Throne and Liberty, is taking the lead on Horizon Steel Frontiers. It’s working on the game alongside original Horizon developer Guerrilla Games and Sony.

Horizon Steel Frontiers is said to build on the fun robot dinosaur hunting action of Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West with greater player freedom, “deeply customizable combat” and other advanced MMORPG systems. You’ll be able to undertake “large-scale raids” with other players. You’ll likely end up competing with other players for resources too.

You’ll create your own character, who belongs to a tribe of your choosing. Just like in the main games, status effects are a key component of combat. You’ll also be able to grapple onto giant machines, chip parts of them off and use weapons that robot enemies drop against them. In a neat touch, you can carry these weapons on your mount and use them in your next fight. Horizon Steel Frontiers has Tallnecks too, so I’m happy about that.

The action is set in a region called the Deadlands, which is inspired by New Mexico and Arizona, and you’ll share this part of the Horizon world with “thousands of other players,” according to Guerrilla studio director Jan-Bart Van Beek. As with the series’ core games, the story here concerns finding a balance between humanity, technology and nature.

Guerrilla said back in 2022 that it was working on more “epic solo adventures for Aloy” (the protagonist of the mainline entries) and it’s said to be making its own Horizon multiplayer game. This MMO isn’t the first Horizon spin-off either. Lego Horizon Adventures, from Guerilla Games and Studio Gobo, arrived a year ago. Co-op is a key aspect of that game, so that’s a multiplayer title too.

Handing development of Horizon Steel Frontiers to a studio with vast experience in the MMO genre is a smart move on Sony’s part. The company pivoted a few years back to focus heavily on live-service games, but that strategy hasn’t panned out so well. Sure, Helldivers 2 has been a major hit, but Concord was an utter disaster. An attempt to make a multiplayer game in the world of The Last of Us didn’t work out. Sony’s acquisition of Bungie hasn’t gone as smoothly as expected either. The company said this week it wrote down the value of Bungie’s assets by $204 million amid Destiny 2‘s struggles, putting even more pressure on the upcoming Marathon to succeed.

Sony and NCSoft have not yet revealed a release date for Horizon Steel Frontiers. In any case, Horizon is one of Sony’s most popular franchises and it should make for strong fodder for an MMO. The action in the gameplay trailer looks as slick as you’d expect from this series and taking down robot dinos with friends in Monster Hunter-style action could be a lot of fun. It’s probably a good thing that you’re not playing as Aloy here, given how annoyingly reluctant she is to accept help from would-be allies in her own games.

Waymo to roll out driverless taxis on highways in three US cities

Waymo is set to expand its self-driving taxi service onto highways in three US cities on Wednesday, an advance for the venture owned by Google’s parent company that raises the stakes on safety.

The company said it would add the high-speed roads to its routes in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco, allowing Waymo cars to ferry passengers to more destinations including San Jose International Airport.

Waymo’s rollout on highways marks a significant step for the robotaxi operator as it aims to encourage the mass adoption of driverless vehicles. It is the first time a company will carry out paid driverless services on the highway without a driver behind the wheel.

This New Hotel Reservation Scam Is Fooling People Who Use Sites Like Booking.com

If you’ve booked a hotel through a platform like Booking.com or Expedia, beware any communication that directs you to confirm your payment details to hold your reservation. Threat actors are targeting the hospitality industry with a phishing campaign designed to steal from travelers.

As outlined by security firm Sekoia.io and reported by The Hacker News, the scheme is referred to as “I Paid Twice” because hotel customers are eventually conned into handing over their banking information. Scammers contact guests via WhatsApp or email about their booking, saying that they need to verify their payment or risk cancellation. The link goes to a fake landing page that looks like Booking.com or Expedia, where victims are prompted to provide card information.

This isn’t the first scam to target Booking.com: Scammers have previously spoofed the site to spread malware directly to users via both fake CAPTCHAs and homograph attacks, which exploit similar characters in the URL to redirect to a malicious website.

How the Booking.com ClickFix scam works

This multi-step campaign actually begins when hackers target hotels themselves with ClickFix attacks, a type of social engineering attack designed to trick users into downloading malware via fake error messages or CAPTCHA forms. (I’ve covered a handful of ClickFix schemes, such as those spread via AI-generated instructional videos on TikTok and expired invite links on Discord.)

The scam runs as follows: Hotel managers receive emails from compromised accounts with phishing links that redirect to a supposed reCAPTCHA page. This is the ClickFix component, as targets are instructed to complete the challenge to “ensure the security of your connection.” A couple of redirects lead to the user copy and execute a PowerShell command that downloads a Remote Access Trojan (like PureRAT) to their device.

Once the malware has been delivered, it allows threat actors remote access, including control of the mouse and keyboard, data exfiltration, command execution, file uploads and downloads, keylogging, and webcam and microphone capture. Hackers are then able to steal admin credentials to gain access to booking platforms and send the aforementioned phishing emails to hotel guests—or they can sell the information to other cybercriminals.

Don’t fall for the hotel booking scam

You can’t control whether a hotel manager unwittingly hands over access to your booking information. But you can avoid further compromising your personal and financial data by staying vigilant to any unexpected communication about your reservation. A reputable hotel probably won’t contact you via a booking platform (nor will the platform itself) to demand payment for holding a reservation you’ve already confirmed.

This sense of urgency is meant to trick you into acting quickly, so if you’re not sure what’s going on, call the hotel directly using the number on their official website (not from the email or WhatsApp message). Don’t click any links, and don’t enter any information unless you have confirmed that you are on a legitimate booking platform or hotel website.

France Fully Lifts Travel Ban on Telegram Founder Durov

An anonymous reader shares a report: France has lifted its travel ban on Telegram founder Pavel Durov, who is under investigation over illegal content on his messaging app, judicial sources close to the case said Thursday. The entrepreneur, 41, was detained in Paris in 2024 and is under formal investigation by French authorities over the platform’s alleged complicity in criminal activity. Durov, who was initially banned from leaving France, had his judicial control relaxed in July, allowing him to reside in the United Arab Emirates, where Telegram is based, for a maximum of two weeks at a time.

What would a “simplified” Starship plan for the Moon actually look like?

In what will likely be his most consequential act as NASA’s interim leader, Sean Duffy said last month that the space agency was “opening up” its competition to develop a lunar lander that will put humans on the surface of the Moon.

As part of this move, Duffy asked NASA’s current lunar lander contractors, SpaceX and Blue Origin, for more nimble plans. Neither has specified those plans publicly, but a recent update from SpaceX referenced a “simplified” version of the Starship system it’s building to help NASA return humans to the Moon.

“Since the contract was awarded, we have been consistently responsive to NASA as requirements for Artemis III have changed and have shared ideas on how to simplify the mission to align with national priorities,” the company said. “In response to the latest calls, we’ve shared and are formally assessing a simplified mission architecture and concept of operations that we believe will result in a faster return to the Moon while simultaneously improving crew safety.”

Windows Boss Ignites Angry Revolt Over Agentic OS As AI Fatigue Sets In
Ahead of Microsoft’s next Ignite event, which kicks off in San Francisco (and online) next Tuesday, November 18, the company’s president of Windows and Devices shared a message on X about the direction Windows is headed it didn’t land particularly well. Just the opposite, it sparked an angry backlash that is a clear indication of AI fatigue.
