‘Nintendo Has Too Many Apps’
The Verge’s Ash Parrish writes: Nintendo has released a new store app on Android and iOS giving users the ability to purchase hardware, accessories, and games for the Switch and Switch 2. When I open my phone and scroll down to the N’s, I get a neat, full row dedicated entirely to Nintendo. That’s four apps: the Switch app, the music app, the Nintendo Today news app, and now the store. (The tally increases to five if you’re a parent using the Switch Parental Controls app.) And it is entirely too much.
Nintendo has always been the one company of the big three publishers that does its own thing, and that’s worked both for and against it. The company hasn’t chased development trends with the same zeal as Microsoft and Sony. That insulates Nintendo when those trends don’t pan out, like exorbitant spending on live-service games that fail. But also hurts it when it comes to performance and user experience. Console-native voice chat, for example, has been a standard on other platforms for a long time, but was only offered on a Nintendo console with the Switch 2 this year.
With the deployment of these apps, Nintendo is both trying to innovate and playing catch-up with results that feel confusing and overwhelming. Do we really need four distinct apps? That’s not to say these apps shouldn’t exist; they serve valuable and necessary purposes. But when I look at all the programs I have to manage in my Nintendo life, it just feels like it’s too much… Further reading: Nintendo Won’t Shy Away From Continuing To ‘Try Anything’

You Can’t Leave Unless You Buy Something
An anonymous reader quotes a report from SFGATE: At the Safeway on San Francisco’s King Street, you now can’t leave the store unless you buy something. The Mission Bay grocery store recently installed new anti-theft measures at the entrance and exit. New gates at the entrance automatically swing open when customers walk in, but they’re set to trigger an alarm if someone attempts to back out. And if you walk into Safeway and change your mind about grocery shopping, you might find yourself trapped: Another gate that only opens if you scan your receipt blocks the store’s sole exit.
During my Monday visit, I purchased a kombucha and went through the check-out line without incident. (No high-tech gates block the exit if you go through the line like normal.) But for journalism’s sake, I then headed back into the store to try going out the new gate. While I watched some customers struggle with the new technology, my receipt scanned immediately. The glass doors slid open, and I was free. But if, like this person on the San Francisco subreddit recounted, I hadn’t bought anything, my only means of exit would have been to beg the security guard to let me out.

You Can Get This Microsoft Surface Book 3 on Sale for Up to 60% Off Right Now
We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication.
The Microsoft Surface Book 3 isn’t the newest model on the market, but it’s one of the few laptops that can serve as both a tablet and a creative workstation, which helps explain why it initially launched at nearly $1,700. Currently, StackSocial is offering the 15-inch 2020 Surface Book 3 on sale for $929.99, equipped with 32GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage, or on sale for $999.99 for the 1TB version. The smaller 13.5-inch models are also available, priced between $699.99 and $799.99. Each one is refurbished to Grade A condition, meaning it looks nearly new, has undergone thorough testing, and comes with a one-year warranty.
Even today, the Surface Book 3 remains a standout in real-world use. The combination of a 10th Gen Intel Core i7 processor and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 graphics still handles most creative workloads—such as photo editing, video projects, or even casual gaming—with minimal slowdown. The 15-inch PixelSense touchscreen is crisp and color-rich, supporting both touch and stylus input, making it ideal for sketching or taking handwritten notes. The screen detaches completely, transforming it into a tablet or studio-style canvas when needed. That flexibility is where the Surface Book line really shines, especially for individuals who frequently switch between productivity, design, and entertainment.
The 32GB of RAM and 512GB or 1TB SSD options make it easy to run multiple apps or store large projects, and the battery life still impressively stretches close to 15 hours under normal use. Of course, this is still a 2020 model, so there are trade-offs: The design isn’t as slim as newer Surface devices, and the webcam is limited to 720p. Also, it ships with Windows 10, but is fully upgradeable to Windows 11. For anyone who values flexibility in their setup (something that works as a full laptop one minute and a sketching tablet the next), the Surface Book 3 offers plenty of value at its refurbished price.

Texas Sues Roblox For Allegedly Failing To Protect Children On Its Platform
Texas is suing Roblox, alleging the company misled parents about safety, ignored online-protection laws, and allowed an environment where predators could target children. Texas AG Ken Paxton said the online game platform is “putting pixel pedophiles and profits over the safety of Texas children,” alleging that it is “flagrantly ignoring state and federal online safety laws while deceiving parents about the dangers of its platform.” The Verge reports: The lawsuit’s examples focus on instances of children who have been abused by predators they met via Roblox, and the activities of groups like 764 which have used online platforms to identify and blackmail victims into sexually explicit acts or self harm. According to the suit, Roblox’s parental controls push only began after a number of lawsuits, and a report released last fall by the short seller Hindenburg that said its “in-game research revealed an X-rated pedophile hellscape, exposing children to grooming, pornography, violent content and extremely abusive speech.” Eric Porterfield, Senior Director of Policy Communications at Roblox, said in a statement: “We are disappointed that, rather than working collaboratively with Roblox on this industry-wide challenge and seeking real solutions, the AG has chosen to file a lawsuit based on misrepresentations and sensationalized claims.” He added, “We have introduced over 145 safety measures on the platform this year alone.”

James Watson, who helped unravel DNA’s double-helix, has died
James Dewey Watson, who helped reveal DNA’s double-helix structure, kicked off the Human Genome Project, and became infamous for his racist, sexist, and otherwise offensive statements, has died. He was 97.
His death was confirmed to The New York Times by his son Duncan, who said Watson died on Thursday in a hospice in East Northport, New York, on Long Island. He had previously been hospitalized with an infection. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory also confirmed his passing.
Watson was born in Chicago in 1928 and attained scientific fame in 1953 at 25 years old for solving the molecular structure of DNA—the genetic blueprints for life—with his colleague Francis Crick at England’s Cavendish laboratory. Their discovery heavily relied on the work of chemist and crystallographer Rosalind Franklin at King’s College in London, whose X-ray images of DNA provided critical clues to the molecule’s twisted-ladderlike architecture. One image in particular from Franklin’s lab, Photo 51, made Watson and Crick’s discovery possible. But, she was not fully credited for her contribution. The image was given to Watson and Crick without Franklin’s knowledge or consent by Maurice Wilkins, a biophysicist and colleague of Franklin.
Gemini Starts Rolling Out On Android Auto
Gemini is (finally) rolling out on Android Auto, replacing Google Assistant while keeping “Hey Google,” adding Gemini Live (“let’s talk live”), message auto-translation, and new privacy toggles. “One feature lost between Assistant and Gemini, though, is the ability to use nicknames for contacts,” notes 9to5Google. From the report: Over the past 24 hours, Google has quietly started the rollout of Gemini for Android Auto, seemingly starting with beta users. The change is server-side, with multiple users reporting that Gemini has gone live in the car. One user mentions that they noticed this on Android Auto 15.6, and we’re seeing the same on our Pixel 10 Pro XL connected to different car displays, and also on a Galaxy Z Fold 7 running Android Auto 15.7.
It’s unclear if this particular version is what delivers support, but that seems unlikely seeing as this very started rolling out last week. Android Auto 15.6 and 15.7 are currently only available in beta, so it’s also unclear at this time if the rollout is tied to the Android Auto beta or simply showing up on that version as a coincidence.

NSYNC’s ‘Bye Bye Bye’ Performed By 194 Movie Clips
True story: My girlfriend was just talking about NSYNC for some reason I didn’t catch because I was in the middle of work. I normally hang on her ever word though, I’m a very attentive boyfriend. Plus I rub lotion on her feet every night and get between the toes and everything. I asked her to do my back one time and she said no thanks. This is a music video from Youtuber The Unusual Suspect (previously) featuring NSYNC’s 2000 banger ‘Bye Bye Bye’ as performed by dialogue from 194 different movies stitched together. It’s like Frankenstein’s monster in that way, but way catchier and less likely to go on a murdering spree.
Denmark’s Government Aims To Ban Access To Social Media For Children Under 15
An anonymous reader quotes a report from the Associated Press: Denmark’s government on Friday announced an agreement to ban access to social media for anyone under 15, ratcheting up pressure on Big Tech platforms as concerns grow that kids are getting too swept up in a digitized world of harmful content and commercial interests. The move would give some parents — after a specific assessment — the right to let their children access social media from age 13.
It wasn’t immediately clear how such a ban would be enforced: Many tech platforms already restrict pre-teens from signing up. Officials and experts say such restrictions don’t always work. Such a measure would be among the most sweeping steps yet by a European Union government to limit use of social media among teens and younger children, which has drawn concerns in many parts of an increasingly online world. “We’ve given the tech giants so many chances to stand up and to do something about what is happening on their platforms. They haven’t done it,” said Caroline Stage, Denmark’s minister for digital affairs. “So now we will take over the steering wheel and make sure that our children’s futures are safe.”
“I can assure you that Denmark will hurry, but we won’t do it too quickly because we need to make sure that the regulation is right and that there is no loopholes for the tech giants to go through,” Stage said.

The Lisbon Airport is turning away private jets inbound for the Web Summit
Startup founders and government officials have been confronted with a unique flavor of first-world problem at this year’s Web Summit, Financial Times reports. The Lisbon Airport has been forced to turn some private jets away, sending flights to seek runway space at airports as far away as Badajoz, a Spanish city two hours away from Lisbon.
The issue might come with the territory. Web Summit is a technology business conference that tends to attract investors, startups and high-profile keynote speakers — this year’s conference features talks from the CEO of Qualcomm and the President of Microsoft, for example — many of whom prefer to fly private. That poses a problem for the Lisbon Airport.
“Please be advised that there is currently a shortage of private jet slots during Web Summit at Lisbon Airport (LIS) and surrounding smaller airports,” Web Summit organizers reportedly told attendees. “Lisbon Airport is experiencing difficulty managing the volume of traffic, resulting in a lack of available take-off and landing slots for all operations.”
FT writes that this kind of airport bottleneck is a first for the conference, and likely caused as much by a growing predilection for private jets as it is the larger number of attendees at this year’s Web Summit. Setting aside the environmental impact of flying private, you’d think all those brilliant minds could come up with some kind of solution beyond flying further away and driving into Portugal. Maybe a jet that hundreds of people can charter at once?

States Seek Extension of Ecommerce Tariff Moratorium at WTO
An anonymous reader shares a report: A group of states is seeking to extend a World Trade Organization agreement to refrain from placing customs duties on digital transmissions, a World Trade Organization document showed on Thursday. The proposal submitted by Barbados on behalf of a group of African, Caribbean and Pacific states proposed to extend the current moratorium — a key pillar of internet development for decades — beyond March 2026, when it was set to expire.

The redesigned Disney+ app is rolling out to more users in the US
Disney is rolling out its redesigned interface for Disney+ to more users in the US today. The redesign brings the streaming service in line with the loud, key art-forward approach of Netflix, and follows a price increase for both tiers of Disney+ that the company introduced in October.
The biggest change in the new Disney+ is the addition of a horizontal navigation bar with separate tabs for recommendations (For You), Disney+, Hulu and ESPN. Disney is leaning on a new algorithm that better uses your viewing history to make recommendations, and it now also integrates live TV streams via a dedicated tab in its vertical menu. Outside of the US, the new interface is also being paired with the rebranding of Disney’s Star streaming service to Hulu.
The new interface is the latest step in Disney’s plan to eventually completely fold Hulu into Disney+ in 2026. The Hulu has a dedicated tab in the app, but eventually it’ll just be one of the many sources of content Disney+ collects. Meanwhile, the live TV component of Hulu + Live TV will eventually be merged with Fubo, creating an even larger YouTube TV competitor that Disney will have 70 percent stake in. The growing competition between Google and Disney could be one of several reasons the companies have yet to settle the carriage dispute that’s currently blocked channels like ABC and ESPN on YouTube TV.

Nintendo Won’t Shy Away From Continuing To ‘Try Anything’
An anonymous reader shares a report: Nintendo has always been a company willing to try just about anything. Cardboard cutout toys that mesh with games? Done. A console called the Wii with a remote-shaped controller? Massive success. Legendary game designer and Nintendo executive Shigeru Miyamoto offered more insight into how the company operates in a recent financial briefing. “Nintendo has always worked with the idea that there are no limits to our efforts,” he said. “For example, when we tried our hand at movies with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, its success was compared to the box office revenues of other movies. However, even if the movie topped the rankings, we would think there was more room for growth.”
Nintendo has been expanding its efforts in Hollywood after The Super Mario Bros. Movie became one of the best-selling films of 2023. The Legend of Zelda movie is now in production, and the Super Mario Galaxy movie is expected sometime in 2026. Miyamoto believes that some Nintendo IPs could see sales numbers “potentially reach beyond the boundaries of entertainment.”
“My latest theme is that there is no ceiling in the world of entertainment,” he said. “In that sense, there are still many markets around the world that can be expanded through Nintendo Switch […] One thing that is interesting about Nintendo is that it’s okay to try anything.”

Your Older Peloton Bike+ Seat Has Been Recalled
Two years ago, Peloton recalled seat posts on its classic Bike models. Now, the brand is doing the same for seats on its older Bike+ models (but not the new Cross Training Bike+ that came out a few weeks ago).
If you have the old model of Bike+, you’ll need to reach out to Peloton to arrange a replacement.
Which Peloton models are affected by the recall?
Per Peloton, this is a voluntary recall of seat posts for Bike+ models made between December 2019 and July 2022 and sold in the U.S. and Canada. If your Bike+ has a PL02 model number on the label inside or behind the front fork or behind the flywheel, it is impacted by the recall. If you’ve checked and you’re still not sure, head to this link for more information.
Why the recall is happening
Like the previous recall of classic Bike seats, this issue centers around the Bike+’s seat post, which, “can break during use, posing a potential fall and injury risk to consumers,” according to Peloton.
The situation seems less serious than that previous recall, when at least 11 people were injured due to the faulty posts. Peloton says it has received three reports of seats breaking across about 833,000 units in the U.S., but no reports of broken seats among the almost-45,000 units in Canada.
How to get a replacement Bike+ seat
The replacements are free, so if you qualify, get one right away. To get yours, visit this link or call Peloton’s customer service at (833) 821-0099.

Researchers surprised that with AI, toxicity is harder to fake than intelligence
The next time you encounter an unusually polite reply on social media, you might want to check twice. It could be an AI model trying (and failing) to blend in with the crowd.
On Wednesday, researchers from the University of Zurich, University of Amsterdam, Duke University, and New York University released a study revealing that AI models remain easily distinguishable from humans in social media conversations, with overly friendly emotional tone serving as the most persistent giveaway. The research, which tested nine open-weight models across Twitter/X, Bluesky, and Reddit, found that classifiers developed by the researchers detected AI-generated replies with 70 to 80 percent accuracy.
The study introduces what the authors call a “computational Turing test” to assess how closely AI models approximate human language. Instead of relying on subjective human judgment about whether text sounds authentic, the framework uses automated classifiers and linguistic analysis to identify specific features that distinguish machine-generated from human-authored content.
Bioware says next Mass Effect is still in development despite turmoil at EA
Development on the next Mass Effect is still underway, Mass Effect executive producer Mike Gamble confirmed in a blog post celebrating the series’ “N7 Day” fan holiday. Bioware shared that it had started work on the new game in 2020, but Electronic Arts’ decision to go private have naturally called the future of the series into question.
Gamble’s blog post doesn’t share many details about the new game beyond the fact that Bioware “is heads-down and focused exclusively on Mass Effect.” What does seem more clear is that the game could have some kind of connection to the Mass Effect TV show currently in development at Amazon. “The writers room is going strong, and we’ve got a lot figured out about how it fits within the Mass Effect canon, and where it sits in respect to the new game,” Gamble says. Notably, the series is set after the events of the original trilogy of games, and follows a new story in the universe’s timeline. “It won’t be a retread of Commander Shepard’s story.”
Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Bioware’s last game, was not the smash hit EA apparently wanted it to be, and Bioware has appeared to go through a period of contraction in response. High-profile senior staff were let go in January 2025, and even before the game was released, EA began moving Bioware developers to other studios. EA itself may also be adjusting its larger game development strategy. Following its proposed acquisition, the publisher announced a partnership with Stability AI in October to create new AI-powered tools to better streamline its development process.
The Mass Effect series is beloved, and Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, the 2021 remaster that packaged all the trilogy’s DLC and games into a single package, was a great reminder. With a new entry and a TV show in the works, Bioware seems poised for a comeback. It just needs to survive EA until then.
