Campagnolo rules out layoffs after reaching agreement with trade unions

It has been a tricky few months for Campagnolo. Il Gazzentino reported in November that the Italian brand was preparing to cut more than 100 jobs at its Vicenza headquarters, as part of a restructuring plan, after it had incurred losses exceeding €24 million.

Campagnolo responded quickly, stating the strategy it had presented to trade unions was “a highly structured plan, the result of months of work… with possible positive developments”. However, it acknowledged a reduction in staff was “expected at this stage”.

But in a statement released yesterday, Campagnolo said it had reached an agreement with “trade unions and social partners” in December that avoids redundancies.

“Seventy-seven percent of employees expressed their support. This agreement led to the signing of a solidarity contract and clearly ruled out any form of layoffs. The process was completed before Christmas, allowing the company to enter the new year with greater stability and a strong sense of responsibility,” Campagnolo said in its statement.

This will be welcome news to FIOM Vicenza, the branch of the Italian Federation of Metalworkers for Vicenza. The trade union said in November that its analysis of Campagnolo’s financial situation was not as disastrous as the company implied and said layoffs could not be the only option.

But Campagnolo’s statement still addressed the scale of change required. “The company is undergoing a deep internal reorganization that affects both its structure and the way it works. The goal is to simplify, reduce decision-making layers, speed up processes, and give space to the young talents who are already part of the organization. This is not a cosmetic change,” it read.

Campagnolo said these changes are necessary to meet the demands of today’s market. While it didn’t divulge the specific demands, many cycling companies are struggling after a chaotic and challenging five years.

The Covid cycling boom prompted many companies to over-order, followed by a period of excessive inventory and discounting, issues in the supply chain and subdued economic forecasts – not forgetting geopolitical pressures and US tariffs.

These conditions led Canyon to lay off 320 staff in Koblenz and Amsterdam last month, following redundancies last year in the USA. There were also layoffs at Trek in January due to similar pressures, according to Escape Collective.

But, despite a tricky market, Campagnolo said it is seeing “encouraging” signals. “The new 13-speed platform is delivering very positive results, both in terms of sales and customer satisfaction. The market has recognized a real shift in pace: technology, precision, speed, and reliability that make this drivetrain truly unique,” it said.

BikeRadar’s Warren Rossiter argued that Campagnolo’s woes are partly its own making, because of how the company positioned itself as a ‘high-end brand’, neglecting the lower end of the market.

Campagnolo’s statement from yesterday suggests this is an issue of which the luxury brand is aware – and one it intends to address.

It says the technology developed through its 13-speed Campagnolo Record groupset, launched in June 2025, will be introduced at lower price points.

“This is a key step in strengthening Campagnolo’s presence in the market and in bringing our products back onto the bikes of the world’s leading manufacturers,” Campagnolo said, adding that “Many other important developments will be unveiled over the course of the year.”

“We continue to build the future of cycling with genuine passion, respect for our history, and a clear focus on what lies ahead. Not only for business, but for love of this sport,” Campagnolo’s statement concluded.

Say Hello To GoogleSQL

BrianFagioli writes: Google has quietly retired the ZetaSQL name and rebranded its open source SQL analysis and parsing project as GoogleSQL. This is not a technical change but a naming cleanup meant to align the open source code with the SQL dialect already used across Google products like BigQuery and Spanner. Internally, Google has long called the dialect GoogleSQL, even while the open source project lived under a different name.

By unifying everything under GoogleSQL, Google says it wants to reduce confusion and make it clearer that the same SQL foundation is shared across its cloud services and open source tooling. The code, features, and team remain unchanged. Only the name is different. GoogleSQL is now the single label Google wants developers to recognize and use going forward.

AMD suggests the next-gen Xbox will arrive in 2027

Microsoft could launch the next-generation Xbox console sometime in 2027, AMD CEO Lisa Su has revealed during the semiconductor company’s latest earnings call. Valve is on track to start shipping its AMD-powered Steam Machine early this year, she said, while Microsoft’s development of an Xbox with a semi-custom SOC from AMD is “progressing well to support a launch in 2027.” While it doesn’t necessarily mean Microsoft is releasing a new Xbox console next year, that seems to be the company’s current goal.

Xbox president Sarah Bond announced Microsoft’s multi-year partnership with AMD for its consoles in mid-2025. Based on Bond’s statement back then, Microsoft is embracing the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in future Xbox games. She also said that the companies are going to “co-engineer silicon” across devices, “in your living room and in your hands,” implying the development of future handheld consoles.

Leaked documents from the FTC vs. Microsoft court battle revealed in the past that Microsoft was planning to make the next Xbox a “hybrid game platform,” which combines local hardware and cloud computing. The documents also said that Microsoft was planning to release the next Xbox in 2028. Whether the company has chosen to launch the new Xbox early remains to be seen, but it is possible when the Xbox X and S were released in 2020, and they haven’t sold as well as the Xbox One.

OpenAI’s Lead Is Contracting as AI Competition Intensifies

OpenAI’s rivals are cutting into ChatGPT’s lead. From a report: The top chatbot’s market share fell from 69.1% to 45.3% between January 2025 and January 2026 among daily U.S. users of its mobile app. Gemini, in the same time period, rose from 14.7% to 25.1% and Grok rose from 1.6% to 15.2%.

The data, obtained by Big Technology from mobile insights firm Apptopia, indicates the chatbot race has tightened meaningfully over the past year with Google’s surge showing up in the numbers. Overall, the chatbot market increased 152% since last January, according to Apptopia, with ChatGPT exhibiting healthy download growth.

On desktop and mobile web, a similar pattern appears, according to analytics firm Similarweb. Visits to ChatGPT went from 3.8 billion to 5.7 billion between January 2025 and January 2026, a 50% increase, while visits to Gemini went from 267.7 million to 2 billion, a 647% increase. ChatGPT is still far and away the leader in visits, but it has company in the race now.

Walmart Joins $1 Trillion Club

Walmart’s market cap surpassed $1 trillion on Tuesday, putting the largest U.S. retail chain in an exclusive club dominated by tech groups. Bloomberg adds: The Bentonville, Arkansas-based chain — a longtime favorite of bargain-hunting consumers — has flexed its massive scale and supplier network to keep prices low and grab market share across the income spectrum. While Walmart has maintained its appeal to households looking for value, its online offerings are drawing new, wealthier shoppers seeking convenience.

Leveraging urunc For Efficiently Running BSD Applications In Linux Environments

While there is the Linuxulator as a kernel-level solution on FreeBSD for running unmodified Linux binaries that can even work for gaming on FreeBSD, running BSD applications on Linux isn’t talked about as much. But developers have found that for those wanting to run BSD applications in Linux environments, the urunc lightweight container runtime can work out rather well for efficiently handling BSD apps on Linux…

DOJ and states appeal Google monopoly ruling to push for harsher penalties against the company

Google might have been officially ruled to have a monopoly, but we’re still a long way from figuring out exactly what that determination will change at the tech company. Today, the US Department of Justice filed notice of a plan to cross-appeal the decision last fall that Google would not be required to sell off the its Chrome browser. The agency’s Antitrust Division posted about the action on X. According to Bloomberg, a group of states is also joining the appeal filing.

At the time of the 2025 ruling, the Justice Department had pushed for a Chrome sale to be part of the outcome. Judge Amit Mehta denied the request from the agency. “Plaintiffs overreached in seeking forced divesture of these key assets, which Google did not use to effect any illegal restraints,” Mehta’s decision stated. However, he did set other restrictions on Google’s business activities, such as an end to exclusive deals for distributing some services and a requirement to share select search data with competitors.

Google has already filed its own appeal over this part of its ongoing antitrust battle. Of course, the tech giant is hoping to get off the hook with fewer penalties rather than the heavier ones the DOJ is seeking.

Netflix says users can cancel service if HBO Max merger makes it too expensive

There is concern that subscribers might be negatively affected if Netflix acquires Warner Bros. Discovery’s (WBD’s) streaming and movie studios businesses. One of the biggest fears is that the merger would lead to higher prices due to Netflix having less competition. During a Senate hearing today, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos suggested that the merger would have an opposite effect.

Sarandos was speaking at a hearing held by the US Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy, and Consumer Rights, “Examining the Competitive Impact of the Proposed Netflix-Warner Brothers Transaction.”

Sarandos aimed to convince the subcommittee that Netflix wouldn’t become a monopoly in streaming or in movie and TV production if regulators allowed its acquisition to close. Netflix is the largest subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) provider by subscribers (301.63 million as of January 2025), and WBD is the third (128 million streaming subscribers, including users of HBO Max and, to a smaller degree, Discovery+).

Google Home Finally Adds Support For Buttons

An anonymous reader shares a report: Google Home users, your long nightmare is over. The platform has finally added support for buttons. The release notes for a February 2 update state that several new starter conditions for automations are now available, including “Switch or button pressed.”

Smart buttons are physical, programmable switches that you can press to trigger automations or control devices in your smart home, such as turning lights on or off, opening and closing shades, running a Good Night scene, or starting a robot vacuum. A great alternative to voice and app control when you want to control multiple devices, smart buttons are often wireless and generally have several ways to press them: single press, double press, and long press, meaning one button can do multiple things.

Godlike Titan threatens humanity in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters S2 trailer

Last month, Apple TV released a teaser for the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, part of Legendary Entertainment’s MonsterVerse, which brought Godzilla, King Kong, and various other monsters (kaiju) created by Toho Co., Ltd into a shared narrative. But we only got the most fleeting glimpse of the promised new mythical Titan threatening the human race. The full trailer just dropped and rectifies that: it’s a gigantic tentacled undersea being dubbed Titan X—and only Kong and Godzilla can stop it.

(Spoilers for Season 1 below.)

As previously reported, the first season picked up where 2014’s Godzilla left off, specifically the introduction of Project Monarch, a secret organization established in the 1950s to study Godzilla and other kaiju—after attempts to kill Godzilla with nuclear weapons failed. In the S1 finale, Godzilla fights off an Ion Dragon, tossing it through a rift back to the Hollow Earth, and Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell) seemingly sacrifices himself to save his colleagues. Per the official Season 2 premise:

Nvidia’s $100 billion OpenAI deal has seemingly vanished

In September 2025, Nvidia and OpenAI announced a letter of intent for Nvidia to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI’s AI infrastructure. At the time, the companies said they expected to finalize details “in the coming weeks.” Five months later, no deal has closed, Nvidia’s CEO now says the $100 billion figure was “never a commitment,” and Reuters reports that OpenAI has been quietly seeking alternatives to Nvidia chips since last year.

Reuters also wrote that OpenAI is unsatisfied with the speed of some Nvidia chips for inference tasks, citing eight sources familiar with the matter. Inference is the process by which a trained AI model generates responses to user queries. According to the report, the issue became apparent in OpenAI’s Codex, an AI code-generation tool. OpenAI staff reportedly attributed some of Codex’s performance limitations to Nvidia’s GPU-based hardware.

After the Reuters story published and Nvidia’s stock price took a dive, Nvidia and OpenAI have tried to smooth things over publicly. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted on X: “We love working with NVIDIA and they make the best AI chips in the world. We hope to be a gigantic customer for a very long time. I don’t get where all this insanity is coming from.”

Take-Two hit pause on the Switch 2 port of Borderlands 4

2K owner Take-Two has paused development on Borderlands 4 for the Nintendo Switch 2, the company shared during its Q3 2026 earnings presentation. The Switch 2 port was originally planned to be released on October 3, 2025, a few weeks after the game’s September 12 launch on all other platforms, but was indefinitely delayed on September 23.

“We made the difficult decision to pause development on that SKU,” Take-Two told Variety. “Our focus continues to be delivering quality post-launch content for players on the ongoing improvements to optimize the game. We’re continuing to collaborate closely with our friends at Nintendo. We have PGA Tour 2K25 coming out and WWE 2K26, and we’re incredibly excited about bringing more of our titles to that platform in the future.”

When the Borderlands 4 Switch 2 port was originally delayed, the game’s developer Gearbox shared that the port needed “additional development and polish time” and that it hoped to “better align this release with the addition of cross saves.” In Take-Two’s Q2 earnings presentation on November 6, 2025, the Switch 2 port was still listed as having a “TBA” release date. The lack of mention in the company’s Q3 presentation and Take-Two’s comment to Variety pretty much confirm that if a Switch 2 version happens, it won’t be anytime soon. The official Borderlands 4 post-release content roadmap currently lists plans for paid and free story DLC and raid bosses, but nothing related to additional ports of the game.

Grand Theft Auto VI‘s planned November 19 release date is still on the books, however. Rockstar Games’ next blockbuster title was originally supposed to be released in fall 2025, before it was delayed to May 2026 last May. The game was delayed a second and final time — at least for now — in November 2025, to its current November 2026 release date.

There’s still room for another delay, but in the earnings statement Take-Two projected confidence, sharing that Rockstar would start marketing the game this summer. The franchise remains a cash cow, so it’s only natural the company would want to get the rollout of Grand Theft Auto VI right. As part of its earnings presentation, Take-Two shared that Grand Theft Auto V, which was originally released all the way back in 2013, has sold 225 million units.

Building An Electric Powered Human-Size Replica Of A LEGO Dune Buggy

This is a video of Youtuber Matt Denton constructing an electric powered, 3D printed parts replica of the 1981 LEGO Technics Dune Buggy set 8845. It’s 10.5x larger than the original, so large Matt is able to sit in it to drive. That’s cool, but you can sit in anything if you put your mind to it. Me? I’m forever sitting in wet spots on the sofa. WAS SOMEBODY LICKING OR DID SOMEBODY PEE? I’m asking the dogs, just to be clear. At least I’m hoping I’m asking the dogs, but if my girlfriend has a Red Bull after 5PM all bets are off.

YouTube Just Blocked This Popular Hack for Free Background Play

For Christmas, I got my husband and myself YouTube Premium, and as much as I hate paying for yet another streaming service, it’s pretty dang nice. There’s ad-blocking, sure, but there are also other bonuses, like additional playback speed options and audio that continues to play in the background when you lock your phone. However, some users have developed hacks to get a few of these features without a subscription, believing they should be included with the site’s free tier rather than being locked behind a paywall. Google’s been cracking down on ad blockers for a while, but now it’s coming after another common YouTube hack—free background play.

Performing this hack was simple. In many cases, you simply needed to watch YouTube in a non-Chrome browser (and definitely not the official YouTube app). Samsung Internet, for instance, had free YouTube background play officially built-in, with the company even publishing official tutorials on how to use it. Brave also offered this feature, as did Vivaldi. If your browser didn’t support free background play by default, you could also usually find an extension for it.

Unfortunately, according to reporting from Android Authority, the hack no longer seems to work in most cases. Toward the end of January, the site noticed that users across Samsung Internet, Brave, and Microsoft Edge complained that free background play no longer worked for them, even when enabled in their browsers or through an extension. Now Google has responded to a question sent by the publication, confirming that it purposefully broke free background play in third-party browsers, whether enabled in the browser’s settings or through an extension.

“Background playback is a feature intended to be exclusive for YouTube Premium members,” a spokesperson for the company said. “While some non-Premium users may have previously been able to access this through mobile web browsers in certain scenarios, we have updated the experience to ensure consistency across all out platforms.”

Well, dang. I’ve reached out to Google for additional comment, but it seems the eye of Sauron is upon us. Google is now officially cracking down on more than ad blocking.

That said, while Google’s efforts do seem to be affecting many users, not everyone is unable to access background play without paying. One user said it’s now been re-enabled on Brave, and I can confirm that I’m able to access it on Safari with my iPhone using the Vinegar extension.

It’s unclear how long these efforts will remain operational, but at least we’ve now been able to diagnose a cause. Free YouTube background play didn’t break on accident, and that means developers and users will have to be extra crafty to keep the hack alive in the future.
