According to an update on the company’s official iPhone Battery and Performance support page, Apple will, like previous models, throttle the processor of the iPhone 8 and X when their batteries degrade to a certain point to prevent unexpected shutdown. Users were furious when this practice came to light last year, but due to all of that controversy, iOS 11.3 has an option for turning the feature off.
This practice of throttling older devices recently resulted in a €5 million ($5.7 million) fine for Apple in an antitrust case brought by Italy’s competition and market authority, the Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (AGCM). It objected to Apple slowing down its phones without telling customers or giving them the ability to return to a previous version of the software.
