Toxic masculinity has been linked to assholes like you, buying high end video cards, and of course having a blast gaming on those in a simulated World War 2 environment chalk full of soyboys and SJW warriors. Actually this study over at Nature.com says nothing about that, but it did in fact seem like a good lead-in. However, it does seem that high testosterone Western males will signal their status to others with luxury consumer goods. Conversely, low T males signal their status by wearing skinny jeans and a lumberjack shirt to Starbucks. Don Draper did chime in and call the study a travesty and point out that he was not advertising to a bunch of pansies to begin with.



Participants viewed five pairs of pretested apparel brands in a randomized, counterbalanced order. One brand of each pair was associated with higher social rank than the other (e.g., Calvin Klein, high vs. Levi’s, low). Importantly, perceived social rank difference between the brands in each pair was substantially greater than perceived difference in quality, mitigating the possibility that the latter influenced participants’ preferences in our task (see Fig. 2b and Supplementary Table 5). Participants indicated the extent to which they preferred one brand relative to the other using 10-point rating scales (Fig. 2a).

I do tend to put my Levi’s on when I want to go work in the garage one my car, with my own hands. And I do put my Calvin Kleins on….never. Because my wife’s clothes do not fit me.
