Superman's Laser Vision a Step Closer to Reality

Researchers from the University of St Andrews have managed to create a membrane laser that is thin, light, and flexible enough to fit on a contact lens. While nobody will be burning anything to a crisp with their eyes any time soon, the development does imply innovative wearables that can function as security or identification markers.

“By varying the materials and adjusting the grating structures of the laser, the emission can be designed to show a specific series of sharp lines on a flat background – the ones and zeros of a digital barcode,” explained Markus Karl, who worked on the new lasers as part of his PhD.
