Billboard Changing Their Weighing Of Streaming Music for the Hot 100 and 200 Charts

Billboard has finalized their weighing of music plays from streaming sources and will give music plays from paid services like Amazon Music, Apple Music and others a greater weight. This is similar to how it’s done now, but they are splitting up the different types of streaming into multiple tiers and they believe the new weighing methods will better represent what’s really happening in the digital music world. This should be interesting as this moves forward because a lot of money is made or lost depending on what the charts have to say.

The shift to a multi-level streaming approach to Billboard’s chart methodology is reflective of a global push to measure streams in a revenue-reflective and access-based manner. Music is now being consumed on streaming services in more diverse ways, migrating from a pure on-demand experience to a more diverse selection of listening preferences (including playlists and radio) and the various options in which a consumer can access music differs based on their subscription commitment.
