Waymo Accepts $245 Million and Uber's "Regret" to Settle Self-Driving Car Dispute

Despite its hope for a $1 billion settlement, Waymo has agreed to $245 million and an “apology” from Uber, which allegedly received confidential insight on self-driving technology after hiring an ex-engineer. While Waymo has failed to offer any real proof of stolen secrets, the US DOJ is moving ahead with its own, separate investigation.

In a lawsuit filed last year, Waymo said that one of its former engineers who became chief of Uber’s self-driving car project took with him thousands of confidential documents. The lawsuit cost Uber precious time in its self-driving car ambition, which is a key to its long-term profitability.
