Prospective owners of Tesla’s solar panels and Powerwall battery products will be able to stroll into Home Depot to determine whether these are truly right for them: 800 stores will advertise them in 12-by-7-foot display areas, some of which will include demonstrations. Lowes is thinking about doing the same.
Expanding Tesla’s presence at Home Depot — one of the largest retailers in the world, with more than 2,200 stores — will be a good measure of its aspirations for solar. Several companies have tried, and failed, to make similar products financially viable. Plus, the US solar market has recently contracted.
