Reports are coming out that CNN is pulling the plug on Beme. CNN aquired Beme in 2016 for a reported $25 million to help put out “technology-enabled news.” CNN said it will work to find some different roles for some of the 22-person Beme team, but others would be let go with severance.
It took me a bit to write this post because I honestly had no idea what Beme was. Apparently it started as a Vine of sorts, which morphed into a news thing with a couple apps. I honestly have no idea, but CNN dropped $25 million on it and now it’s dead. Perhaps some of that money should have went to advertising.
Beme could have been something of CNN’s answer to the live-streamed business news network Cheddar, in terms of attracting a younger audience who doesn’t necessarily watch – or even own a TV – but who get their news online and through streaming video.
