Crazy Supernova Looks Like a New Kind of Star Death

Everyone knows when a supernova goes off the star is gone……..wrong. Scientists have discovered a new type of supernova that appears to happen to the same star multiple times. This behavior was observed of star iPTF14hls and it’s driving the cosmology/astronomy world crazy. What’s causing it is unknown, but this really is an interesting find for the astronomy community. Just goes to show we really don’t know that much about our universe.

The repeat eruptions suggest that iPTF14hls might indeed be a pulsational pair-instability supernova, the result of spontaneous quantum conversions, via Einstein’s E=mc2, from energy to matter, and back again. If so, the discovery would prove the bold PPISN hypothesis and add a major branch to the star-death taxonomy.
