Facebook Using "NRA Approach" to Defend Its Creepy Facial Recognition Programs

Notification and consent should be required before a company is allowed to collect or store your biometric information, but Facebook doesn’t think so: the social media giant has been fighting against pro-privacy legislation via lobbying and other aggressive tactics, and it sounds like they won’t quit until policies align in their favor. The company’s work in this space has gotten so advanced that it can even identify users whose faces are hidden. I guess the lesson here is to stop uploading photos of yourself.

Facebook and other data-dependent tech companies are taking what Morris called an “NRA approach” to policy change. “They basically say, ‘You’ll take our innovation out of our cold, dead hands,” he said in the report. And Facebook users should pay attention: When you tag a friend in a photo, that’s feeding a massive facial recognition dataset. There’s no telling how your biometric data could be used to target ads, locate, or track you or your friends and family in the future. But one thing is certain: it will be a lot harder to leave the house unnoticed.
