Mary Lou Jepsen, the accomplished former executive at Facebook and head of display technology at Oculus, hopes that in 8 years there will be new technology that can help us see into our minds. After leaving Oculus last year, she started up her own company, Openwater, which is developing a wearable device that will allow MRI capabilities in an embedded device on a lightweight form. The device will allow users to peer inside their own brains and bodies in detail and help in diagnosing and treating diseases. However, a prototype for the companies device has not yet been completed, the former MIT professor also holds over 100 patents not to be outdone by the creators of the Jedi Mind.
“I don’t think this is going to take decades,” she told CNBC. “I think we’re talking about less than a decade, probably eight years until telepathy.”
She sees it as a potential way to speed up human communication, which is limited to how fast we can flap our jaws, type or tap out a message. The idea is that communicating by thought alone could be much faster and even allow us to become more competitive with the artificial intelligence that is supposedly coming for everyone’s jobs very soon.
