More Pirated Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs Leak Online, but Mystery Remains

The release of Tom Hanks’ Inferno flick in 4K (following the Oscar-winning, cult classic “The Smurfs 2” and “Patriots Day”) has prompted yet another discussion on the state of Ultra HD Blu-ray piracy, but it remains unlikely that AACS2 has genuinely been cracked: evidently, bus encryption (two separate keys to break) is making the process a real challenge. The hypothesis going around is that pirate groups have merely found an exploit that lets them rip the movies under certain conditions. Those of you who are disappointed by the Inferno 4K screenshot should know that the movie had a 2K digital intermediate, which would explain the softness. In other media news, the leading library for unofficial Kodi add-ons, TVaddons, has disappeared after being sued last week.

…it’s clear that some pirates have found a way through. After the first pirated Ultra HD Blu-Ray Disc leaked early last month, two new ones have appeared in recent days. Following the historic “Smurfs 2” release, a full UHD copy of “Patriots Day” surfaced online little over a week ago, followed by a similar copy of “Inferno” this past weekend. The latter two were both released by the scene group TERMiNAL and leaked to various torrent sites. While the leaks all appear to be legitimate, it’s still a mystery how the Blu-Ray discs were ripped. While some have suggested that AACS 2 must have been cracked, there is no evidence supporting this yet.
