Arcade afficianados and anyone interested in what NYC looked like in the 70s, can check out the documentary The Lost Arcade, now available on most streaming and video on-demand services after a limited theater run. The documentary takes us on a guided tour of Chinatown Fair, the last arcade in New York City. Viewers are given an intimate observation inside the arcade and players that come and go. With the resurgent interest of arcades it is nice to have a glance of the golden years for arcades. I await a good documentary on Cyber Cafes and the seedy underground of Counter-Strike players of the early aughts.
The Lost Arcade sheds a behind-the-scenes light into the demise of arcade culture, as it coincided with the rise of home console and online gaming, and showcases the dichotomy of how gamers connected then vs. now. But more importantly, it highlights the diversity and camaraderie among the competitive gamer community that arcades like Chinatown Fair were so uniquely able to foster.
