Speculation on the next Xbox console will finally end when Microsoft officially unveils the Scorpio this Sunday, but for now, we’ll have to bear with some smaller nuggets of info: one thing that was just learned is that developers may utilize 9GB of the system’s 12GB of GDDR5 memory; only 3GB will be reserved for the system. Developers who choose not to use the full amount may use the rest as a cache, which would allow for faster loading, among other things. A series of Scorpio teasers have also been released on the official Xbox YouTube channel, and some think there are hidden messages within.
Microsoft’s Mike Ybarra has announced that the latest tuning to the Xbox Project Scorpio console upgrade has unlocked an extra gigabyte of RAM for developers – just days before it’s due to be revealed at E3. Scorpio has 12GB of GDDR5 RAM – that extra gigabyte means the console now offers up to three quarters of that specifically to developers and their games, with 3GB reserved for the system. Going by Ybarra’s comments, it seems Microsoft intends to continue making the console’s power more open to developers. RAM represents the short-term memory available to games being played on a system – in very simple terms, the more you have available, the more a game can load at one time.
