Courtesy of Everest Link, Wi-Fi is now available on the world’s highest mountaintop for those who are having spotty cellular service but need to alert friends that they may be about to die from oxygen deprivation or fatigue. The story is actually pretty amusing when you consider how difficult it was to move the hardware around and set things up in such hostile conditions. Apparently, the network would have been up sooner if it weren’t for extremists and political unrest in the area.
Finding the technical people to set up the equipment was hard as well, as the technicians had to learn wilderness survival skills. Getting the power to the equipment was also difficult, as the only option is renewable energy. All the solar panels and devices had to be carried by either people or pack animals to get to a particular site. That meant that the more compact the device was, the less power it required. The PTP 650 wireless backhaul provided throughput and reliability for the network infrastructure. Now Everest Link offers between 100 megabits a second and 200 megabits a second over links of 80 to 90 kilometers. The PTP 650 backhaul link stays up all of the time.
