Party Chat on Nintendo Switch Seems Terrible

Hori has released images for an upcoming headset that details how party chat may work on the Nintendo Switch, and some people are calling it a bit convoluted. We saw similar wire jungles a decade ago (check the article comments for how a headset for PS3 did it back in 2006 or so), but this looks pretty awkward for a modern console: as voice chat on the Switch requires a smartphone app, it looks like you’ll have to run three wires to talk to your friends.

…it’s a hot mess. As you can see in the promo images, there’s a three-way adaptor that you connect to both your Switch and smartphone. The third connector is the one you’ll be plugging the headset into. There’s a mic mute button, a volume rocket, and a third button we’re not sure what it does. This headset is out July 21 alongside Splatoon 2. The Nintendo Switch Online Service is due for launch in 2018, but until then, using the console’s online functionality will remain free.
