{"id":986997,"date":"2022-03-03T04:57:48","date_gmt":"2022-03-03T09:57:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.prime-wow.com\/?p=986997"},"modified":"2022-03-03T04:57:48","modified_gmt":"2022-03-03T09:57:48","slug":"how-did-we-build-the-new-astro-pi-computers-for-the-international-space-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prime-wow.com\/?p=986997","title":{"rendered":"How did we build the new Astro Pi computers for the International Space Station?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are really excited that our two upgraded Astro Pi units <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/blog\/astro-pi-rocket-launch-21-space-raspberry-pi-computer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have arrived on the International Space Station<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/blog\/astro-pi-2021-news-rocket-launch-hardware\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Each unit contains<\/a> the latest model of the Raspberry Pi computer, plus a Raspberry Pi High Quality Camera and a host of sensors on a custom Sense HAT, all housed inside a special flight case designed to keep everything cool and protected. Here is the story of how the Astro Pi units were built:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The upgraded Astro Pi units have been designed and built in collaboration with ESA Education, the European Space Agency\u2019s education programme. The Astro Pis\u2019 purpose is for young people to use them in <a href=\"https:\/\/astro-pi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the European Astro Pi Challenge<\/a>. The film highlights the units\u2019 exciting new features, such as a machine learning accelerator and new camera, which can capture high-quality images of Earth from space using both visible light and near-infrared light.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-blog-entry\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.prime-wow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Astro-Pi-machine-learning-dongle-800x450-1.jpg\" alt=\"Astro Pi MK II hardware plus a Coral machine learning accelerator.\" class=\"wp-image-74158\" \/><figcaption>The new Astro Pi unit, with its camera and machine learning accelerator.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>There\u2019s an extended team behind the new hardware and software, not just us working at the Raspberry Pi Foundation and the European Space Agency.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThanks to our friends at ESA, and all the people who have shared their unique expertise and knowledge with us, [\u2026] we\u2019ve managed to take two ordinary Raspberry Pi computers from the production line in Wales and see them end up on the International Space Station. It\u2019s been a real privilege to get to work with such an amazing group of space professionals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite>\u2013 Richard Hayler, Senior Programme Manager and lead engineer of the Astro Pi units<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The new Astro Pis are all ready to run young peoples\u2019 computer programs as part of the European Astro Pi Challenge. The young people who successfully proposed experiments for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/blog\/young-people-space-experiment-ideas-astro-pi-mission-space-lab-2021-22\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2021\/22 round<\/a> of Astro Pi <a href=\"https:\/\/astro-pi.org\/mission-space-lab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mission Space Lab<\/a> have just submitted their programs to us for testing. These programs will run the teams\u2019 experiments on the new Astro Pis in May.<\/p>\n<h2>Your young people\u2019s code in space<\/h2>\n<p>There is still time <strong>until 18 March<\/strong> to take part in the 2021\/22 round of Astro Pi <a href=\"https:\/\/astro-pi.org\/mission-zero\/\">Mission Zero<\/a>. Mission Zero is a <strong>beginners\u2019 coding activity<\/strong> for all young people <strong>up to age 19<\/strong> in ESA member and associate states. Mission Zero is free, can be completed online in an hour, and lets young people send their unique message to the astronauts on board the ISS.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/astro-pi.org\/mission-zero\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"222\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/www.prime-wow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Astro-Pi-Mission-Zero-2021-222x250-1.png\" alt=\"Logo of Mission Zero, part of the European Astro Pi Challenge.\" class=\"wp-image-74455\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>To take part, participants follow our step-by-step guide to write a simple Python program. Their program will display their message to the astronautsvia the Astro Pi\u2019s LED display (complete with \u2018sunglasses\u2019). Parents or educators support the participants by signing up for a mentor code to submit the young people\u2019s programs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-container-622091240c322 wp-block-buttons\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-cyan-blue-background-color has-background\" href=\"https:\/\/astro-pi.org\/mission-zero\/\">I want to get started with Mission Zero<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>All Mission Zero participants receive a certificate showing the exact time and location of the ISS when their program was run \u2014 their moment of space history to keep. It\u2019s so exciting to work with the European Space Agency in order to send young people\u2019s code into space.
