Rockstar Games announced it\u2019s acquiring Video Games Deluxe, the Sydney-based studio behind L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files (2017)\u00a0<\/em>and the shelved Quest port of\u00a0Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004)<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The details of the acquisition haven\u2019t been made public, however Rockstar says in\u00a0a press statement<\/a>\u00a0that Video Games Deluxe has now been renamed to \u2018Rockstar Australia\u2019, and will \u201ccontinue [its] efforts to make the best games possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to those VR ports, Video Games Deluxe is best known for its work on hit detective game\u00a0L.A. Noire (2011), <\/em>as well as the\u00a0Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy (2021)\u00a0<\/em>compilation, which brought GTA III (2001), GTA: Vice City (2002)<\/em> and GTA: San Andreas<\/em> to mobile and modern consoles.<\/p>\n

Shortly before the compilation\u2019s re-release in late 2021 though, Rockstar and Meta (then Facebook) announced\u00a0they were working to port GTA: San Andreas (2004)\u00a0<\/em>to Quest 2<\/a>, which was slated to be led by Video Games Deluxe.<\/p>\n

Rockstar never publicly announced Video Games Deluxe was involved, <\/em>likely owing to the fact the port was cancelled shortly thereafter, however in a 2020 job listing the studio tipped its hand by announcing it was creating\u00a0a\u00a0\u201cAAA open world title in VR\u201d<\/a> for Rockstar.<\/p>\n

As a long-time support studio for Rockstar, the acquisition likely won\u2019t change much for any potential revival of GTA: San Andreas<\/em> for Quest.\u00a0After years of silence, Meta confirmed with IGN<\/em> <\/a>in August 2024 the project was put \u201con hold indefinitely.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
