You&#8217;re not guaranteed to receive a Waymo when you do order one of those rides, but Uber says you can increase your chances of receiving one by changing your &#8220;Ride Preferences&#8221; in the app. Upfront prices remain the same whether you get a Waymo or not, though if you do end up in a robotaxi, you won&#8217;t be prompted to tip. You&#8217;ll use the Uber app to unlock the Waymo, open its trunk and start your ride, too.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"end-legacy-contents\"><\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/os\/creatr-uploaded-images\/2025-03\/97f2b3c0-f867-11ef-bbaf-4a5674d5322c\" data-crop-orig-src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/os\/creatr-uploaded-images\/2025-03\/97f2b3c0-f867-11ef-bbaf-4a5674d5322c\" style=\"height:1440px;width:2560px;\" alt=\"How Waymo rides appear in the Uber app.\" data-uuid=\"fb955bf4-352b-377a-8cd3-76e4cdc66d09\"><figcaption><\/figcaption><div class=\"photo-credit\">Uber \/ Engadget<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Uber says Waymo One will cover 37 square miles in Austin, and in a first for the company, Waymo vehicles themselves will be stored, cleaned and maintained by a third-party partner, Avomo, theoretically making the experience even more taxi-like than before.<\/p>\n<p>Waymo won&#8217;t be the only major self-driving shop offering rides in Austin. Tesla&#8217;s <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1\" class=\"no-affiliate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/transportation\/evs\/elon-musk-says-tesla-will-launch-a-robotaxi-service-in-austin-this-june-044745591.html\" data-original-link=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/transportation\/evs\/elon-musk-says-tesla-will-launch-a-robotaxi-service-in-austin-this-june-044745591.html\">robotaxi service<\/a> is supposed to launch in the Texas capital in June. They&#8217;re not evenly matched so far, though. In May 2024, Waymo said it makes <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:7;pos:1\" class=\"no-affiliate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/waymo-says-its-robotaxis-are-now-making-50000-paid-trips-every-week-130005096.html\" data-original-link=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/waymo-says-its-robotaxis-are-now-making-50000-paid-trips-every-week-130005096.html\">50,000 paid trips every week<\/a>. It remains to be seen how quickly Tesla will reach the same scale.
