Beeper Mini has<\/a> a new \u201cfix\u201d coming for its broken iMessage on Android integration<\/a>. However, the new method requires Mac access to send (and intermittently resend) \u201cregistration data\u201d from an Apple-made desktop or laptop, calling into question how far users will stick with the app. The company says you\u2019ll see the new functionality in an update to the Beeper Cloud<\/a> Mac app on Wednesday, December 19.<\/p>\n

Beeper\u2019s current method requires identification info (\u201cregistration data\u201d) sent from a physical Mac computer to authenticate iMessage connections on Android. The company\u2019s latest plans now shift the Mac onus to users. \u201cWe have, up until now, been using our own fleet of Mac servers to provide this,\u201d a Beeper spokesperson wrote in the app\u2019s Reddit community. \u201cUnfortunately, this has proven to be an easy target for Apple because thousands of Beeper users were using the same registration data.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beeper Mini launched to much fanfare, promising \u2014 and delivering \u2014 seamless iMessage chats on Android with only a phone number. However, in what seemed like an inevitable move, Apple squashed the app\u2019s core functionality<\/a>, forcing the startup to deploy new workarounds<\/a> as it entered a cat-and-mouse game with the $3 trillion corporation.<\/p>\n

Beeper says tomorrow\u2019s update for Beeper Cloud on Mac will generate unique \u201c1:1\u201d registration data for individuals rather than thousands of accounts drawing on the same validation info on Beeper\u2019s servers. The company says the new approach \u201cmakes the connection very reliable.\u201d However, the registered Mac will still need to \u201cperiodically regenerate\u201d the data after you\u2019ve connected a Mac to Beeper Cloud, so it can\u2019t just be a one-and-done connection to the computer.<\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t have a Mac and want to use Beeper Mini, the company says you can ask a friend to use their Apple computer for validation. \u201cIn our testing, 10-20 iMessage users can safely use the same registration data,\u201d the company posted. The spokesperson said the update will restore chatting on iMessage with your Apple ID email if you don\u2019t already have a phone number tied to your account.<\/p>\n

It remains to be seen if Beeper Mini\u2019s users will stick around for the more cumbersome setup. \u201cAt this point, I am willing to wait for Apple to come out with RCS support,\u201d Redditor u\/OldSalukiBandDude commented, referring to Apple\u2019s promised support for the standard<\/a> that will bring more iMessage-like features to chats between iPhones and Android handsets. \u201c\u2018Fix\u2019 is a strong word,\u201d u\/PredatorRanger added. \u201cThis is more like half-assing a workaround that requires more on the user\u2019s end.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others were more open-minded about Beeper\u2019s persistence in the face of Apple\u2019s moves to squash the service. \u201cPpl are so whiney,\u201d u\/Waders411111 wrote. \u201cThis is a great bandaid to stop the bleeding and let ppl use beeper as intended.. as a way to integrate all your message apps in one place.\u201d U\/bb147 concurred: \u201cNot the most user friendly fix but I am happy to have stable consolidated chats again even if I have to install something on a Mac, at least for now.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to the new setup method, Beeper says it\u2019s open-sourcing its full iMessage bridge and the Mac code that generates registration data. The company linked to a Github tool<\/a> that allows users to self-host the bridge, bypassing the company\u2019s servers for those who want extra assurance.<\/p>\n
