And like many technologically engaged Ars Technica readers, he does not like what he sees in terms of automakers&#8217; approach to data privacy. On Friday, Sen. Markey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markey.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/senator_markey_letter_to_automakers_on_privacy.pdf\">wrote to 14 car companies<\/a> with a variety of questions about data privacy policies, urging them to do better.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/cars\/2023\/09\/connected-cars-are-a-privacy-nightmare-mozilla-foundation-says\/\">As Ars reported in September<\/a>, the Mozilla Foundation published <a href=\"https:\/\/foundation.mozilla.org\/en\/privacynotincluded\/articles\/its-official-cars-are-the-worst-product-category-we-have-ever-reviewed-for-privacy\/\">a scathing report<\/a> on the subject of data privacy and automakers. The problems were widespread\u2014most automakers collect too much personal data and are too eager to sell or share it with third parties, the foundation found.<\/p>\n<p>Markey noted the Mozilla Foundation report in his letters, which were sent to BMW, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Stellantis, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota, and Volkswagen.
