The retailer, America\u2019s single biggest employer and largest company by revenue, <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:1;pos:1\" class=\"no-affiliate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/retail-consumer\/walmart-says-it-is-not-advertising-social-platform-x-2023-12-01\/?taid=656a288567e55600014f4914\" data-original-link=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/retail-consumer\/walmart-says-it-is-not-advertising-social-platform-x-2023-12-01\/?taid=656a288567e55600014f4914\">told<\/a> <em>Reuters<\/em> on Friday it\u2019s no longer advertising on the platform formerly known as Twitter. The departure follows owner Elon Musk amplifying antisemitic posts and flinging expletives at fleeing advertisers. \u201cWe aren\u2019t advertising on X as we\u2019ve found other platforms to better reach our customers,\u201d a Walmart spokesperson told <em>Reuters<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Walmart\u2019s exit adds to a growing list of companies that have pulled ads from the platform. <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/apple-reportedly-pulls-ads-from-x-amid-a-growing-backlash-to-antisemitic-content-on-the-platform-205849759.html\">Apple, Disney<\/a>, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/ibm-suspends-advertising-on-x-after-its-ads-were-placed-next-to-pro-nazi-content-234332820.html\">IBM<\/a>, Comcast and Warner Bros. Discovery are among the businesses no longer buying ads on X. A group of advertisers <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1\" class=\"no-affiliate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/30\/technology\/elon-musk-dealbook-advertisers.html\" data-original-link=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/30\/technology\/elon-musk-dealbook-advertisers.html\">told<\/a> <em>The New York Times<\/em> on Thursday their temporary pauses will likely become permanent. \u201cThere is no advertising value that would offset the reputational risk of going back on the platform,\u201d Lou Paskalis, CEO of marketing consultancy AJL Advisory, told the paper.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"end-legacy-contents\" \/><\/p>\n<p>X\u2019s former advertisers had no shortage of reasons to jump ship. Musk\u2019s latest series of self-inflicted wounds began when the billionaire appeared to endorse and amplify a post falsely claiming Jewish communities were stoking hatred against white people. X responded by <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/x-lawsuit-accuses-media-matters-of-running-a-campaign-to-drive-advertisers-away-from-its-website-040022933.html\">suing the organization<\/a>, accusing it of \u201cknowingly and maliciously [manufacturing] side-by-side images depicting advertisers\u2019 posts on X Corp.\u2019s social media platform beside Neo-Nazi and white national fringe content.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Musk\u2019s attempt to smooth things over only made things worse. After apologizing for amplifying the antisemitic content at <em>The New York Times<\/em>\u2019 DealBook event, he <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/elon-musk-responds-companies-pulled-233913536.html\">told advertisers backing off of the platform<\/a> to \u201cGo fuck yourself.\u201d His company now potentially <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/elon-musks-x-could-lose-75-million-in-ad-revenue-following-antisemitic-content-backlash-075316116.html\">stands to lose $75 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Walmart <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:8;pos:1\" class=\"no-affiliate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/corporate.walmart.com\/askwalmart\/how-many-people-work-at-walmart\" data-original-link=\"https:\/\/corporate.walmart.com\/askwalmart\/how-many-people-work-at-walmart\">employs<\/a> around 1.6 million people in the US.
