The survey says electric vehicles suffer from 79 percent more maintenance issues than gas- or diesel-powered ones, while plug-in hybrids have 146 percent more problems. The troubles portray the industry\u2019s growing pains with the relatively new technology as the planet <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/july-3rd-was-the-hottest-day-in-recorded-history-214854746.html\">sets record temperatures<\/a>, and scientists <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/we-have-three-years-to-curb-emissions-to-avoid-climate-catastrophe-un-report-finds-204058474.html\">warn of rapidly approaching deadlines<\/a> to thwart global climate catastrophe.<\/p>\n<p>The survey polled <em>CR<\/em>\u2019s members about issues with their rides from the past year, gathering data on 330,000 vehicles. The publication\u2019s data included models from 2000 to 2023, alongside a few (early launched) 2024 models. <em>CR<\/em> studied 20 \u201ctrouble areas,\u201d including relatively minor issues like squeaky brakes or a broken interior trim and more problematic ones related to the transmission, engine or EV battery. The number of potential trouble areas varies by type: internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles have 17, EVs have 12, traditional hybrids have 19 and plug-in hybrids have all 20.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"end-legacy-contents\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The publication combined the data with its own track testing, owner satisfaction survey results and safety info. The silver model drives down a city street with dramatic lighting.\" data-uuid=\"fae52d51-e390-3e52-afa8-d37cc5806428\" \/><figcaption>The Lexus UX, a rare plug-in hybrid that scored well in the survey.<\/figcaption><div class=\"photo-credit\">Lexus<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Non-plugin hybrids scored well, with the survey indicating they suffer from 26 percent fewer issues than gas- and diesel-powered vehicles. <em>CR<\/em> highlighted the most reliable brands in that space, including the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2018-03-27-lexus-offers-subscription-service.html\">Lexus\u2019 UX<\/a> and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2021-lexus-nx-300-nx-200900545.html\">NX Hybrid<\/a> and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2021-toyota-camry-gets-updates-110000522.html\">Toyota\u2019s Camry Hybrid<\/a>, Highlander Hybrid and RAV4 Hybrid.<\/p>\n<p>If only plug-in hybrids (PHEV) could enjoy those ratings. Instead, their longer list of trouble spots led to 146 percent more problems than traditional gas-powered vehicles. Lowlights include the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/chrysler-pacifica-hybrid-2018-phev-recall-irl-131527040.html\">Chrysler Pacifica<\/a>, which scored an abysmal 14 out of 100, and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2021-audi-q5-first-drive-150000639.html\">Audi Q5<\/a>. However, several PHEVs defied the category\u2019s expectations, including \u201cstandouts\u201d like the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/toyota-rav-4-prime-priced-at-40000-195446077.html\">Toyota RAV4 Prime<\/a> and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:12;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/kia-sportage-phev-suv-america-175104167.html\">Kia Sportage<\/a>. Several others, including the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:13;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2018-09-27-2019-bmw-x5-review.html\">BMW X5<\/a>, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:14;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/next-gen-hyundai-tucson-reveals-143200862.html\">Hyundai Tucson<\/a> and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:15;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2020-ford-escape-hybrid-fuel-212000954.html\">Ford Escape<\/a>, scored \u201caverage\u201d in reliability.<\/p>\n<p>Fully electric cars and SUVs, the vehicles many automakers aim to <a data-i13n=\"cpos:16;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/lincoln-all-electric-vehicles-2030-100028732.html\">fill their dealership lots with by 2030<\/a>, have mediocre average scores: 44 and 43, respectively.<a data-i13n=\"cpos:17;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/rivians-electric-truck-is-available-to-lease-in-14-us-states-215636074.html\"> Electric pickups<\/a>, the newest technology in the bunch, perhaps unsurprisingly scored worse with an average of 30.<\/p>\n<p>Lexus came out on top among EV brands. All but one of its models scored above average or better in <em>CR<\/em>\u2019s ratings. And the lone exception, the NX, still had an average score. Toyota also did well, including the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:18;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2021-toyota-4runner-review-living-150000641.html\">4Runner SUV<\/a>, which CR describes as \u201camong the most reliable models in the survey.\u201d However, its electric <a data-i13n=\"cpos:19;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2021-toyota-land-cruiser-4runner-110000083.html\">Tundra pickup<\/a> scored poorly. However, <em>Ars Technica<\/em> <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:23;pos:1\" class=\"no-affiliate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/cars\/2023\/11\/evs-have-79-more-reliability-problems-than-gas-cars-says-consumer-reports\/\" data-original-link=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/cars\/2023\/11\/evs-have-79-more-reliability-problems-than-gas-cars-says-consumer-reports\/\">notes<\/a> the company\u2019s reliability scores struggled more with things like bodywork, paint \/ trim and climate systems.<\/p>\n<p>Regionally speaking, Asian automakers enjoyed the highest average scores in the survey at a healthy 63.
