An internal memo sent to OpenAI staff on Saturday after former CEO Sam Altman\u2019s abrupt firing<\/a> reiterates that \u201ca breakdown in communication\u201d led to the decision, not \u201cmalfeasance or anything related to our financial, business, safety, or security\/privacy practices,\u201d according to reporting from Axios<\/em><\/a> and The New York Times<\/em><\/a>. The memo obtained by both publications was sent to employees by OpenAI\u2019s Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap.<\/p>\n

Speculation has been nonstop since Altman was ousted unexpectedly as CEO on Friday and dropped from the company\u2019s board of directors, with little concrete information from OpenAI itself to go on. In its announcement of the decision, the board said only that he was not \u201cconsistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities.\u201d The board named Mira Murati, OpenAI\u2019s Chief Technology Officer, as interim CEO.<\/p>\n

In response, OpenAI\u2019s now-former president, Greg Brockman<\/a>, announced he was stepping down too, tweeting, \u201cSam and I are shocked and saddened by what the board did today.\u201d Three senior researchers later resigned as well, according to The Information<\/em><\/a>. Now, in another report, sources told The Information<\/em><\/a> that Altman already has a \u201cnew venture\u201d in the works, and he plans to bring Brockman and possibly others on with him. It\u2019s as yet unclear if this venture is separate from Altman\u2019s other known upcoming projects, including a purported collaboration with former Apple designer Jony Ive.<\/p>\n

Numerous reports in the aftermath have attempted to provide an explanation for Altman\u2019s firing, with some claiming there were concerns over the rapid development of the company\u2019s AI products and, according to journalist Kara Swisher<\/a>, its \u201cprofit driven direction.\u201d In Saturday\u2019s memo, per Axios<\/em>, Lightcap wrote that the announcement \u201ctook us all by surprise,\u201d and \u201cwe have had multiple conversations with the board to try to better understand the reasons and process behind their decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sudden shakeup could now have ramifications for the impending sale of OpenAI\u2019s employee shares, valued at roughly $86 billion, The Information<\/em><\/a> reported. In a cryptic tweet on Saturday, Altman quipped, \u201cif i start going off, the openai board should go after me for the full value of my shares (sic<\/em>).\u201d<\/p>\n
