The acquisition, which is expected to close in the coming days, will be <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2023\/10\/31\/2769851\/0\/en\/Atari-enters-into-an-agreement-to-acquire-Digital-Eclipse.html\">worth up to $20 million<\/a> based on the performance of Digital Eclipse over the next decade. Atari says that by bringing Digital Eclipse under its wing, it &#8220;will be able to further support its retro-focused growth strategy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Over the last several years, Digital Eclipse has become well-known for its expertise in remastering older titles and releasing them as collections. <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-cowabunga-collection-release-date-140016805.html\"><em><ins>Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection<\/ins><\/em><\/a>, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2019-08-28-disney-aladdin-lion-king-games-in-fall.html\"><em><ins>Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King<\/ins><\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>and the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2018-07-04-nintendo-switch-snk-arcade-games-november.html\"><em><ins>SNK 40th Anniversary Collection<\/ins><\/em><\/a> are among its more notable projects.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"end-legacy-contents\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Digital Eclipse caught the attention of many last year with <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/atari-50-the-anniversary-collection-announced-161306163.html\"><em><ins>Atari 50: The Anniversary Collection<\/ins><\/em><\/a><em>. <\/em>That <a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/game\/atari-50-the-anniversary-celebration\/\">well-regarded compilation<\/a> pulled together dozens of games from across Atari&#8217;s 50-year history and placed them in context with the help of marketing and development documents, archival footage and new interviews with former Atari employees. Digital Eclipse built on the &#8220;interactive documentary&#8221; format with this year&#8217;s release of <em>The Making of <\/em><a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2012-12-03-karateka-on-pc-today-alongside-karateka-development-book.html\"><em><ins>Karateka<\/ins><\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It <a data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaleclipse.com\/media\/digital-eclipse-atari\"><ins>plans<\/ins><\/a> to continue with this Gold Master Series <a data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/digital-eclipse-preserves-game-history-with-style-1850224859\">preservation<\/a> project under Atari&#8217;s umbrella. It will still have the ability to work with third-party developers and publishers, and there are several non-Atari projects in the works that it has yet to announce.<\/p>\n<p>Atari seems to be on a mission to become a powerhouse in retro gaming and game preservation. It also <a data-i13n=\"cpos:12;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/atari-buys-the-game-studio-behind-the-system-shock-remake-165355144.html\"><ins>bought Nightdive Studios<\/ins><\/a>, a developer that <a data-i13n=\"cpos:13;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/the-star-wars-dark-forces-remaster-will-arrive-on-february-28-2024-175502427.html\"><ins>specializes<\/ins><\/a> in <a data-i13n=\"cpos:14;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/heres-a-first-look-at-system-shock-2-enhanced-edition-163311981.html\"><ins>remasters<\/ins><\/a>, and AtariAge (a community and news site that focuses on Atari) this year.
