{"id":1195781,"date":"2023-10-24T14:07:07","date_gmt":"2023-10-24T18:07:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.prime-wow.com\/?p=1195781"},"modified":"2023-10-24T14:07:07","modified_gmt":"2023-10-24T18:07:07","slug":"twitter-clone-pebble-is-shutting-down-just-five-weeks-after-a-rebrand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prime-wow.com\/?p=1195781","title":{"rendered":"Twitter clone Pebble is shutting down just five weeks after a rebrand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The crowded field of Twitter clones has just winnowed a bit, as Pebble has officially exited the game, announced via an email to <em>Engadget. <\/em>The social media site, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/a-new-twitter-alternative-is-trying-to-lure-users-about-to-lose-their-old-checkmark-160011153.html\"><ins>formerly called T2 Social,<\/ins><\/a> was actually created by ex-Twitter employees and this announcement occurs just five weeks <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/would-be-x-competitor-t2-social-is-now-called-pebble-no-not-that-pebble-150021871.html\"><ins>after the rebrand to Pebble.<\/ins><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The company is transparent when it comes to the reasoning behind the closure, saying \u201cwe were not growing quickly enough for investors to believe that we will break out.\u201d Pebble also noted the crowded field of competitors and the \u201cuphill climb\u201d to garner traffic and sustained use. It simply needed more time to \u201cbuild out a complete Pebble\u201d, but investors put the kibosh on that idea.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"end-legacy-contents\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Though the app\u2019s going the way of the dodo, current users will be given some time to login and download their personal archives. Just head to account settings on the web version and look for an option marked \u201cwrap it up please.\u201d Additionally, the company says this might not be the absolute end for Pebble, suggesting that folks \u201cstay tuned\u201d for a potential reinvention of the platform at some point in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Pebble was committed to Twitter\u2019s original mission of becoming a \u201cpublic town square\u201d and even tried to <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/a-new-twitter-alternative-is-trying-to-lure-users-about-to-lose-their-old-checkmark-160011153.html\"><ins>lure verified Twitter users<\/ins><\/a> by allowing them to keep their checkmarks. The app\u2019s shutdown suggests this strategy didn\u2019t work. Good night, sweet prince.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, there are still plenty of Twit-alikes out there for those looking to escape endless porn bot scam accounts commenting on every single post you make and blue check bozos bloviating about nonsense. There are the big apps, like Threads and Bluesky, but also Mastodon, Post, Spoutible, Spill, Hive Social, CounterSocial and that Trump one, among others.
