The report says Nvidia could begin selling the chips as early as 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The move is part of Microsoft\u2019s broader goal of challenging Apple with Arm-based processors for Windows PCs. According to preliminary Q3 data from research firm IDC, the iPhone maker has nearly doubled its market share since launching the Arm-based <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/apple-silicon-m1-mac-181040846.html\">Apple Silicon<\/a> three years ago. The company\u2019s in-house Mac chips <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/apple-m1-upscaled-133046858.html\">balance<\/a> performance (including on-chip AI tasks) and battery life to a degree that Intel\u2019s processors have yet to match.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"end-legacy-contents\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When reached via email by Engadget, Nvidia spokesperson Hector Marinez said the company declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia has recent experience with Arm-based chips, but they\u2019re <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/nvidia-grace-arm-datacenter-cpu-170038725.html\">designed for data centers<\/a>. Nvidia announced plans to buy Arm Holdings in 2020 for $40 billion. However, the company <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/nvidia-reportedly-abandoned-arm-acquisition-071743886.html\">pulled the plug on the deal<\/a> in early 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>AMD is also reportedly preparing to launch Arm-based PC chips as early as 2025. The two companies will join Qualcomm, which has made <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1\" class=\"no-affiliate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/qualcomm-8cx-gen-3-7c-gen-3-arm-chipsets-windows-gaming-handheld-230008247.html\" data-original-link=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/qualcomm-8cx-gen-3-7c-gen-3-arm-chipsets-windows-gaming-handheld-230008247.html\">Windows laptop processors<\/a> since 2016. <em>Reuters<\/em> reports that Qualcomm\u2019s exclusivity agreement with Microsoft for Arm-based Windows chip designs will expire in 2024, opening the door to new challengers soon after. Windows on Arm <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/lenovo-flex-5g-review-windows-on-arm-snapdragon-pc-140042969.html\">hasn\u2019t exactly<\/a> been a <a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/hp-elite-folio-review-snapdragon-pc-180036528.html\">rousing success<\/a> to date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMicrosoft learned from the 90s that they don\u2019t want to be dependent on Intel again, they don\u2019t want to be dependent on a single vendor,\u201d Jay Goldberg, chief executive of consulting firm D2D Advisory, told <em>Reuters<\/em>. \u201cIf Arm really took off in PC (chips), they were never going to let Qualcomm be the sole supplier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Microsoft (along with much of the tech industry) bets its future on <a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/chatgpt-is-suddenly-everywhere-are-we-ready-180031821.html\">generative AI<\/a>, the upcoming chips will unsurprisingly focus heavily on it. The company has reportedly urged chipmakers to bake advanced AI-powered capabilities into their silicon.
