The company shared details about a new subscription called \u201cNot a Bot,\u201d that it\u2019s currently testing in New Zealand and the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>The subscription, which was first <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/10\/17\/twitter-x-charging-new-users-1-dollar-year-to-tweet\/\">reported by<\/a> <em>Fortune<\/em>, requires new users to pay the equivalent of $1 USD per year in order to be able to post. \u201cAs of October 17th, 2023 we\u2019ve started testing \u2018Not A Bot,\u2019 a new subscription method for new users in two countries,\u201d X <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/help.twitter.com\/en\/using-x\/not-a-bot\">explains<\/a>. \u201cThis new test was developed to bolster our already significant efforts to reduce spam, manipulation of our platform and bot activity. This will evaluate a potentially powerful measure to help us combat bots and spammers on X, while balancing platform accessibility with the small fee amount.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"end-legacy-contents\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Under the scheme, new users will be required to verify their phone numbers and pay the $1 fee if they want to use core features like tweets, retweets, bookmarks and likes. Those who who don\u2019t pay will only be able to use X in a \u201cread only\u201d mode.<\/p>\n<p>The company said that for now the fees will not apply to existing users. \u201cIt is not a profit driver,\u201d X said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"73f928e6a3024343900977fbab8ce3ba\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Starting today, we&#8217;re testing a new program (Not A Bot) in New Zealand and the Philippines. New, unverified accounts will be required to sign up for a $1 annual subscription to be able to post &amp; interact with other posts. During a livestreamed conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last month, Elon Musk <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/elon-musk-x-twitter-monthly-payment\/\">suggested<\/a> he was considering some kind of mandatory payment as part of an effort to combat bots and spam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSubscription options have proven to be the main solution that works at scale,\u201d X said in a post from its support account. Musk\u2019s earlier comments proved unpopular and on X rival <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/09\/22\/bluesky-saw-record-usage-after-elon-musk-announced-plans-to-charge-all-x-users\/#:~:text=A%20related%20report%20from%20Mashable,of%20roughly%201.13%20million%20accounts.\">Bluesky<\/a> saw a surge in activity following the remarks.<\/p>\n<p>Others have also reported that Musk has long had ambitions to gain access to users\u2019 credit card and billing information, which would further his plan to bring banking and other <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/twitter-ceo-teases-banking-and-payment-plans-in-memo-about-x-rebrand-175218664.html\"><ins>financial services<\/ins><\/a> to X.
