The pricing is designed to allow the developer to cover Reddit\u2019s widely disparaged <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/reddit-will-charge-companies-for-api-access-citing-ai-training-concerns-184935783.html\">API fee hikes<\/a>, which led to mass online protests earlier this year and the shutdown of the beloved client Apollo.<\/p>\n<p>The app\u2019s developer, who uses the handle u\/det0ur on Reddit, wrote that the pricing was \u201cdefinitely an experiment\u201d as they try to keep their app afloat. \u201cIf I absolutely have to, I will transition to some other plans,\u201d Narwhal\u2019s creator wrote. \u201cBut I want to try this first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"end-legacy-contents\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The developer had previously announced tiered pricing based on users\u2019 API calls, but u\/det0ur scrapped that after realizing how cumbersome that would be for users. \u201c[Let\u2019s] be real, the 2003-esque cell phone plan with monitored usage just isn\u2019t great,\u201d the developer <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1\" class=\"no-affiliate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/narwhalapp\/comments\/16zz0no\/considering_new_subscription_plans_please_leave\/\" data-original-link=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/narwhalapp\/comments\/16zz0no\/considering_new_subscription_plans_please_leave\/\">wrote<\/a> in a separate post from last week. \u201cWho wants to even worry about what an API Call is? Let alone how much it will cost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, API calls are an inescapable financial reality for third-party developers hoping to offer users an alternative to the official Reddit client. Reddit revealed its <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/reddit-communities-are-going-dark-to-protest-changes-that-would-hurt-third-party-apps-154133342.html\">maligned API changes<\/a> this spring, which led Apollo developer Christian Selig to say the updated pricing <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/reddit-app-developer-says-the-sites-new-api-rules-will-cost-him-20-million-a-year-203911487.html\">would cost him $20 million<\/a> to keep the app going \u201cas-is.\u201d More than 6,000 subreddits <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/reddit-sees-more-than-6000-communities-go-dark-in-protest-over-api-changes-095311637.html\">went dark to protest<\/a> the changes, but (unlike Unity\u2019s recent <a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/bowing-to-pressure-unity-announces-the-terms-of-its-surrender-193422770.html\">walkback<\/a>) Reddit <a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/reddits-ceo-reportedly-told-staff-that-the-communitys-api-protest-will-blow-over-183708217.html\">dug in its heels<\/a> and weathered the storm, leading to <a data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/apollo-and-other-popular-third-party-reddit-apps-have-shut-down-123149140.html\">Apollo\u2019s closure<\/a> and the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/reddit-takes-control-of-popular-subreddit-that-protested-api-changes-182005439.html\">forced reopening of communities<\/a> that continued to protest.<\/p>\n<p>Users switching to Narwhal sound pleased with the pricing and the app. \u201cThe customization options are great; I have been able to \u2018rebuild\u2019 Apollo as closely as possible,\u201d wrote u\/Neryuslu. \u201cYou\u2019re the first developer ever to get a monthly sub from me. I have refused this model so far, but in this case it\u2019s obviously different. Still sucks to indirectly pay Reddit like this.
