The company made the modifications amid the conflict in and around the West Bank.<\/p>\n<p>Until now, the company would only grant a newsworthiness exception to accounts that had at least 100,000 followers. X has removed that threshold, as <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/10\/10\/x-changes-its-public-interest-policy-to-redefine-newsworthiness-of-posts\/\"><em>TechCrunch<\/em><\/a> reports. The latest version of the policy stipulates that \u201chigh profile\u201d accounts are eligible for a newsworthiness exception. The account in question also needs to represent &#8220;a current or potential member of a local, state, national or supra-national governmental or legislative body.&#8221; Only elected officials and government figures have historically been <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2019-03-28-twitter-label-tweets-terms-of-service-newsworthy.html\">eligible for the exemption.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"end-legacy-contents\" \/><\/p>\n<p>X\u2019s Safety account noted there\u2019s been an upswing in daily active users in the region in recent days and that users have posted more than 50 million times about the conflict. The platform <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/safety\/status\/1711564133504872481\"><ins>said<\/ins><\/a> that it was focused on \u201cprotecting the conversation on X\u201d as the situation unfolds.<\/p>\n<div id=\"390581765cf84253bc031de33c5a1843\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In the past couple of days, we\u2019ve seen an increase in daily active users on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/X?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@X<\/a> in the conflict area, plus there have been more than 50 million posts globally focusing on the weekend\u2019s terrorist attack on Israel by Hamas.<\/p>\n<p>As the events continue to unfold rapidly, a cross-company\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Safety (@Safety) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Safety\/status\/1711564133504872481?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 10, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cOver the weekend, we updated our <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/help.twitter.com\/en\/rules-and-policies\/public-interest\">Public Interest Policy<\/a>,\u201d the company said. \u201cWe know that it&#8217;s sometimes incredibly difficult to see certain content, especially in moments like the one unfolding. In these situations, X believes that, while difficult, it&#8217;s in the public&#8217;s interest to understand what&#8217;s happening in real time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>X also said it had removed \u201cnewly created Hamas-affiliated accounts\u201d and is working with partners to reduce the spread of \u201cterrorist content.\u201d However, the change to the newsworthiness policy could enable more misinformation about the Israel-Hamas conflict (and other issues) to remain on X when it previously would have been yanked.<\/p>\n<p>The company appears to be taking a more hands-off approach to misinformation in general under owner Elon Musk.
