You read that right. A gaming console that counts 1982 as its most successful year is releasing another new cartridge in the year 2023. The game-in-question is called <em>Save Mary<\/em> and was actually developed during the console\u2019s golden years, before being shelved when the 2600 went the way of the dodo.<\/p>\n<p><em>Save Mary <\/em>was in development for two whole years, which is a lifetime in the generation of gaming that preceded the NES. The normal timeframe to produce a game back then was six to nine months, with <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2014-05-01-true-story-et-atari.html\"><ins>some notorious titles<\/ins><\/a> taking just five or six weeks. <em>Save Mary<\/em> was originally developed by veteran Atari staffer Tod Frye, the guy behind the 2600 version of <em>Pac-Man<\/em> and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/now\/2017-02-21-ataris-swordquest-comic-returns-without-the-game.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAH1eFIlZnmrdkxaXclBtfG__nn2BXBaHO6Vhmp--Obwg67ydf7SrIb7mJGhMANW78-B9EZgZlLIeHfYgsllZG2L6qR40Y_MgapKaUG-5FULNqznDq9J1m9BHUMEQhTRfQZ-Kizt5Zf1Al-ip2YugCD0vvCvAmXitiCNzhv9Kmfuk\"><ins>the Swordquest series.<\/ins><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"end-legacy-contents\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Preordering one of these cartridges for $60 nets you a silver collector\u2019s edition box and a full-color manual, in addition to the game itself. She\u2019s stuck in a steep canyon that\u2019s rapidly filling with water. You use a crane to build platforms to help her escape the dire predicament. Power-ups appear on the cliffside to help you out, an idea that Atari says was likely inspired by <em>Pac-Man.<\/em> Atari\u2019s founder Nolan Bushnell <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/steemit.com\/gaming\/@darth-azrael\/atarianvideo-game-magazine-mayjune-1989-1559579378220\"><ins>lauded the title in a 1989 interview,<\/ins><\/a> saying that it was the \u201cfirst game in which you rely on construction rather than destruction to save the princess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Save Mary<\/em> joins several other <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/atari.com\/collections\/atari-xp\"><ins>recently-manufactured Atari 2600 cartridges,<\/ins><\/a> many of which are brand-new titles like <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/mr-run-and-jump-will-be-the-first-official-cartridge-for-the-atari-2600-since-1990-110010790.html\"><em><ins>Mr. Run and Jump<\/ins><\/em><\/a> or unreleased \u201clost\u201d games like <em>Aquaventure.<\/em> Each cartridge in the Atari XP line is \u201cmanufactured to exact standards\u201d from yesteryear with some modern flourishes like beveled edges to prevent pin damage and gold-plated connectors.
