During the survey, a Preble&#8217;s meadow jumping mouse was captured and released after a small skin sample was collected as part of the new biobanking program (credit: <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"caption-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/media\/473381\">USFWS<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<div><a name=\"page-1\" \/><\/div>\n<p>The world\u2019s wildlife are facing a barrage of threats caused by climate change, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/insideclimatenews.org\/news\/13102022\/climate-change-and-habitat-loss-is-driving-some-primates-down-from-the-trees-and-toward-an-uncertain-future\/\">loss of suitable habitat<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/insideclimatenews.org\/news\/28022023\/animal-human-conflict-climate\/\">dwindling food supplies<\/a>. As a result, endangered species across the U.S. are edging closer to extinction at alarming rates\u2014and if they disappear, critical genetic information could vanish with them.<\/p>\n<p>In a new initiative announced on Tuesday, the U.S. Fish &amp; Wildlife Service is working with the nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/reviverestore.org\/projects\/biobanking\/\">Revive &amp; Restore<\/a> and other partners to create a \u201cgenetic library\u201d of the country\u2019s endangered species\u2014before it\u2019s too late.<\/p>\n<p>Through a process called biobanking, FWS field staff are gathering biological samples such as blood, tissues and reproductive cells from animals to be cryogenically preserved at extremely low temperatures (at least -256 degrees Fahrenheit) and stored at a USDA facility in Colorado.
