Fifty-six million years ago, trillions of tons<\/a> of carbon found its way into the atmosphere, acidifying<\/a> oceans and causing the already-warm global climate to heat up by another 5\u00ba C<\/a> (9\u00ba F)\u2014an episode known as the \u201cPaleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum\u201d or \u201cPETM.\u201d<\/p>\n

Like today, the warming climate affected the environment on land and in the sea, with extreme downpours<\/a> and heat-stressed<\/a> plankton at the base of the food web. Land animals had a high rate of extinction<\/a> and replacement<\/a> by smaller species<\/a>, and there was a mass extinction of tiny shell-making creatures that lived on the sea bed. The hotter climate supported alligators<\/a> and swamp-cypress forests<\/a>, like those in today\u2019s southeastern United States, in Arctic latitudes that are covered by ice and tundra today.<\/p>\n
