The board said it planned <a data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OversightBoard\/status\/1709248801968451896\">to announce<\/a> a case involving a user appeal related to an \u201caltered\u201d video of President Joe Biden. The board didn\u2019t disclose specifics of the case, which it said would be announced formally \u201cin the coming days,\u201d but suggested it will touch on policies that could have far-reaching implications for Meta.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the coming days the Oversight Board will announce a new case regarding a user-appeal to remove an altered video of President Joe Biden on Facebook,\u201d the Oversight Board said in a statement. \u201cThis case will examine issues related to manipulated media on Meta\u2019s platforms and the company\u2019s policies on misinformation, especially around elections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"end-legacy-contents\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While neither Meta or the Oversight Board has shared details about the video in question, the case could further shape the social network\u2019s policies around AI-generated or otherwise manipulated media. Even before the rise of generative AI tools that make it easier than ever to create fake videos of public figures, Meta has taken heat over its response to suggestively edited videos of politicians. In 2019, the company declined to remove  an <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2019-05-24-facebook-fact-check-nancy-pelosi-video.html\"><ins>edited clip<\/ins><\/a> that falsely claimed then-Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi was \u201cdrunk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The incident prompted the company\u2019s current policy that <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2020-01-07-facebook-deepfake-rules.html\"><ins>bars<\/ins><\/a> AI-generated deepfakes, but  <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/transparency.fb.com\/policies\/community-standards\/manipulated-media\/\"><ins>allows<\/ins><\/a> some other types of edited videos to remain up. When the Oversight Board agrees to a case, Meta is only required to implement the board\u2019s decision for the specific Facebook or Instagram post in question.
