To that end, it has shifted <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/need-for-speed-unbound-release-date-trailer-174505124.html\"><ins>Need for Speed<\/ins><\/a> developer Criterion Games over from its sports division to the EA Entertainment unit. Most of Criterion&#8217;s team will be working with DICE, Ripple Effect and Ridgeline on Battlefield games, while &#8220;a core group&#8221; will continue with Need for Speed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Criterion already has experience with Battlefield after working on vehicles for those games over the years. As such, the studio is a logical fit to help out with the franchise. &#8220;Criterion\u2019s experience with Battlefield, our technology and building engaging experiences will have an immediate positive impact as we continue to work on <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/tag\/battlefield-2042\/\"><em><ins>Battlefield 2042<\/ins><\/em><\/a>, and as we continue pre-production on a connected Battlefield Universe,&#8221; Vince Zampella \u2014 who leads the <em>Apex Legends<\/em>, Star Wars Jedi, Battlefield and Need for Speed teams \u2014 <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1\" class=\"no-affiliate-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ea.com\/news\/criterion-games-joins-ea-entertainment\" data-original-link=\"https:\/\/www.ea.com\/news\/criterion-games-joins-ea-entertainment\">wrote in a memo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"end-legacy-contents\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Battlefield 2042<\/em> wasn&#8217;t exactly received well. It <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/battlefield-2024-ui-bug-fix-update-3-201300738.html\"><ins>had a buggy launch<\/ins><\/a> and it took DICE several months to <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/battlefield-2042-season-one-delayed-153414832.html\"><ins>fix some of the core issues<\/ins><\/a> before the game&#8217;s first season started. Soon after it released <em>Battlefield 2042<\/em>, EA <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/ea-battlefield-connected-universe-dice-vince-zampella-180315432.html\"><ins>added Battlefield<\/ins><\/a> to the portfolio of franchises that Zampella (a FPS veteran who previously worked on Titanfall and Medal of Honor) oversees.<\/p>\n<p>EA is arguably in need of another majorly successful franchise it can rely on in the long run alongside EA FC, Madden, <em>Apex Legends<\/em> and The Sims. Battlefield is one of its best bets for that, given the series&#8217; mostly strong track record. Competing with the likes of Call of Duty will remain a tall order.
