{"id":1117224,"date":"2023-03-14T06:32:38","date_gmt":"2023-03-14T10:32:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.prime-wow.com\/?p=1117224"},"modified":"2023-03-14T06:32:38","modified_gmt":"2023-03-14T10:32:38","slug":"celebrate-pi-day-by-supporting-the-raspberry-pi-foundation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prime-wow.com\/?p=1117224","title":{"rendered":"Celebrate Pi Day by supporting the Raspberry Pi Foundation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today is officially Pi Day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While 14 March is an opportunity for our American friends to celebrate the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pi_Day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mathematical constant Pi<\/a>, we are also very happy to make this day a chance to say a massive thank you to everyone who supports the Raspberry Pi Foundation\u2019s work through their generous donations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-1 wp-block-buttons\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-vivid-green-cyan-background-color has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/donate\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=web&amp;utm_campaign=pi-day-2023\">I want to donate for Pi Day<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>More than computers<\/h2>\n<p>You may know that the Raspberry Pi story started in Cambridge, UK, in 2008 when a group of engineers-cum-entrepreuers set out to improve computing education by inventing a programmable computer for the price of a textbook.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.prime-wow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/ATHENS_CODE_CLUB_024-500x329-1.jpg\" alt=\"A group of young people investigate computer hardware together.\" class=\"wp-image-81490\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Fast forward 15 years and there are 50 million Raspberry Pi computers in the world, being used to revolutionise education and industry alike. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Removing price as a barrier<\/a> for anyone to own a powerful, general-purpose computer will always be an important part of our mission to democratise access to computing.<\/p>\n<p>What we also know today is that access to low-cost, high-quality hardware is essential, but it\u2019s not enough.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If we want all young people to be able to take advantage of the potential offered by technological innovation, then we also need to support teachers to introduce computing in schools, find ways to inspire young people to learn outside of their formal education, and make sure that everything we do is informed by rigorous research.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" src=\"https:\/\/www.prime-wow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/20221025_Kenya_Connect_RPF_Training_08030-copy-500x334-2.jpg\" alt=\"Kenyan educators work on a physical computing project.\" class=\"wp-image-82428\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>That\u2019s the focus of <a href=\"https:\/\/static.raspberrypi.org\/files\/about\/RaspberryPiFoundationStrategy2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">our educational mission<\/a> at the Raspberry Pi Foundation, and we couldn\u2019t do this work without your support.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>What we achieve for young people thanks to your support\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>We are fortunate that a large and growing community of people, corporations, trusts, and foundations makes very generous donations to support our educational mission. It\u2019s thanks to you that we are able to achieve what we do for young people and educators:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2022 alone, over 3.54m people engaged with our free online learning resources for young people, including brand-new pathways of projects for HTML\/CSS, Python, and <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.raspberrypi.org\/en\/pathways\/pico-intro\">Raspberry Pi Pico<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Supported by us, more than 4500 <a href=\"https:\/\/codeclub.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Code Club<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/coderdojo.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CoderDojos<\/a> are running in 103 countries, and an additional 2891 clubs that were disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic tell us that they are actively planning to start running sessions for young people again soon.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>We engaged over 30,000 young people in challenges such as <a href=\"https:\/\/astro-pi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Astro Pi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/online.coolestprojects.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Coolest Projects<\/a>, enabling them to showcase their skills, think about how to solve problems using technology, and connect with like-minded peers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/www.prime-wow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/CoolestProjects_03072020-204-copy-500x333-1.jpg\" alt=\"A young coder shows off her tech project Five young coders show off their robotic garden tech project for Coolest Projects to two other young tech creators.\" class=\"wp-image-78333\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>We have supported tens of thousands of computing teachers through our curriculum, resources, and online training. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/curriculum\/\">The Computing Curriculum<\/a>, which we developed as part of the National Centre for Computing Education in England, is now being used by educators all over the world, with 1.7m global downloads in 2022.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>We completed and published the findings of the world\u2019s largest-ever research programme testing how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/blog\/gender-balance-in-computing-big-picture\/\">improve the gender balance in computing<\/a>. We are now working on integrating the insights from the programme into our own work and making them accessible and actionable for practitioners.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Trust me when I say this is just a small selection of highlights, all of which are made possible by our amazing supporters.
