But Charter is now on the verge of settling the lawsuit for less than $262 million, an amount that will apparently be fully covered by the company&#8217;s insurers.<\/p>\n<p>A Dallas County Court jury last year <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2022\/07\/jury-orders-charter-to-pay-7-billion-for-murder-of-woman-killed-by-cable-tech\/\">decided<\/a> that Charter should pay the victim&#8217;s family and estate $7 billion in punitive damages and $337.5 million in compensatory damages. A judge <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2022\/09\/judge-rules-charter-must-pay-1-1-billion-after-murder-of-cable-customer\/\">lowered the total amount<\/a> to over $1.1 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Charter said it planned to appeal the $1.1 billion judgment, and the sides held settlement talks.
