Squid Game Has So Much CGI It's Almost Shocking

One of the many, many things that makes Netflix blockbuster hit Squid Game so engaging is how real it feels. It’s a little fantastic, for sure, but the big idea that people can get so desperate in their lives they’re willing to do anything for money always rings true. Plus, these people aren’t competing in some sort…

Ridley Scott Confirms 'Blade Runner' and 'Alien' Live-action Shows
While making the press rounds for his upcoming film, House of Gucci, iconic director Sir Ridley Scott revealed that both Blade Runner and Alien live-action television series are in the early stages of development. From a report: Speaking to the BBC news radio series, Today, Scott explained that his team has already written an initial pilot script for the former show, which would most likely air as a 10-episode run. Although the Alien series was first announced nearly a year ago as an FX on Hulu exclusive from showrunner Noah Hawley (Fargo and Legion), little has been heard of the project since then. Scott didn’t tell much, but confirmed that the Alien series is still “being written for pilot,” adding that Hawley and his crew “have to also write out the history, if it’s eight hours or 10 hours, the bible of what happens in those 10 hours.” A CGI anime set in the world of Agent K and Deckard in the year 2032, Blade Runner: Black Lotus, is currently airing on Adult Swim.

Hideo Kojima's studio has opened a film, TV and music division
“Why doesn’t Kojima just make movies?” It’s a rhetorical question fans of Hideo Kojima have asked after every game since Metal Gear Solid. For better or worse, no other creator in the gaming industry has pushed the medium closer to film than Kojima. And after hinting his studio could venture into filmmaking, it’s doing precisely that.
Per GamesIndustry.Biz, Kojima Productions has established a division dedicated to music, TV and film that will operate out of Los Angeles. Riley Russell, a former Sony Interactive executive, will lead the unit as it attempts to expand the cultural footprint of Kojima Productions.
“The new division will be tasked with working with creative and talented professionals in television, music and film, as well as the more familiar games industry,” Russell told the outlet. “The team has as its charter, the goal of expanding the reach and awareness of the properties now under development at Kojima Productions, and to make them even more a part of our popular culture.”
It’s not surprising to see Kojima Productions expand beyond games. Kojima is known for his film-like approach to making games, and if you follow him on Twitter, you’ll know he frequently tweets about his favorite albums and movies. The question now becomes how the studio plans to handle the expansion. Since reforming in 2015, Kojima Productions has released one game. You can push that number to two if you count the recent Director’s Cut release of Death Stranding as a separate title. What would a film adaptation of Death Stranding look like? For that matter, what would an adaptation of any Kojima game look like? We may just find out soon enough.

How to Leave a Holiday Party Early Without Being Rude

‘Tis the season to gather, make merry, and peace out early so you can get into your fleece Snuggie and watch Money Heist before bed? While this may not be the official motto of the holiday season, it sure is for me. I love mingling, toasting, and being festive—up to a point. And that point is usually well before the…

Google Messages update translates iMessage responses for Android users
Enlarge (credit: Andrew Cunningham)
Putting aside the lack of end-to-end encryption support, one of the most annoying things for Apple iPhone users about communicating with Android users via SMS are all the iOS features that get lost in translation. Having a visual effect translated to a deadpan “(sent with Balloons)” ruins whatever impact you intended the effect to have, and it clutters up your message history with extraneous text.
On that second front, Apple’s Tapback feature is especially annoying. When using iMessage, this short list of half a dozen reactions is a handy way to signal acknowledgement or enjoyment, or just to bump a message thread to the top of someone’s list. On Android phones, each individual Tapback generates an entirely new block of text with a text description of the reaction and the entire original text. As a fallback option for non-smartphones or an accessibility feature, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But it can quickly make SMS group-text threads chaotic and unreadable for Android users.
A new update to the Google Messages app, which was spotted over the weekend by 9to5Google and appears to be rolling out to some Android users now, fixes that issue by translating Tapback responses into emoji responses. Android devices using the Messages app have been able to send each other emoji responses for over a year now, but this is Google’s first attempt to map Apple’s response mechanism to its own.

GameStop's Black Friday deals include all-time low prices on some Switch games
GameStop’s Black Friday sale is underway, and it includes some killer deals on Nintendo Switch games. Several have dropped from $60 to $27, which is the lowest price we’ve seen for them to date. The most notable title here is probably The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which is widely considered one of the best games ever. If you haven’t yet checked out the open-world adventure, now’s a great time to do so ahead of the sequel’s arrival in 2022.
Several other Switch games have dropped to an all-time low of $27 at GameStop: Astral Chain, Xenoblade Chronicles, Paper Mario and Kirby Star Allies. As spotted by Nintendo Life, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe and Splatoon 2 are also available at that price, which matches their respective previous lows.
The physical and digital editions of each game are on sale. If you’re buying one as a gift, a physical copy might be the nicer option, but it’s worth noting that GameStop’s free shipping doesn’t kick in until you spend at least $35. So, you might want to treat yourself too.
You can also find deals on PlayStation and Xbox games and services. Among them are a third off a year of PlayStation Plus and savings on games including Deathloop, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Far Cry 6 and FIFA 22.

Netflix's Cowboy Bebop Actually Makes Sense with a Laugh Track

Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop is a show that often feels at odds with itself as it haphazardly shifts between the various and disparate tones that defined the original anime it’s based on. Just when the series feels like it might have found a comfortable groove to settle into, it switches things up, and its characters are…

US Lawmakers Call for Privacy Legislation After Reuters Report on Amazon Lobbying
Five members of Congress called for federal consumer-privacy legislation after a Reuters report published Friday revealed how Amazon has led an under-the-radar campaign to gut privacy protections in 25 states while amassing a valuable trove of personal data on American consumers. From a report: “Amazon shamefully launched a campaign to squash privacy legislation while its devices listen to and watch our lives,” U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat who has been involved in bipartisan negotiations on privacy legislation, wrote Friday on Twitter. “This is now the classic Big Tech move: deploy money and armies of lobbyists to fight meaningful reforms in the shadows but claim to support them publicly.”
The revelations underscored the need for bipartisan action on stronger privacy protections, he wrote. No major federal privacy legislation has passed Congress in years because members have been deadlocked on the issue. U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat who has introduced several privacy bills in recent years, said in a statement that the Reuters story showed how companies including Amazon are “spending millions to weaken state laws,” and hoping Congress will also water down federal legislation “until it’s worthless.”

Wealth and privilege allowed Elizabeth Holmes to start Theranos

Peckham Federal Building on November 17, 2021, in San Jose, California. For months, legal observers have been speculating whether Elizabeth Holmes would take the stand in her own criminal trial. Friday afternoon, Holmes put those questions to rest and was sworn in.
In her testimony, it was abundantly clear that, without her family’s wealth and status, Theranos would have been little more than a college student’s flight of fancy.
Holmes traced the beginnings of Theranos for the jury. As a college freshman at Stanford studying engineering, she had wanted to miniaturize the blood testing process—initially, her dream was to cram everything into a pill or patch, she told the court. Patients would either swallow the pill or slap on the patch, et voilà, get results beamed to a separate device. Sounds exactly like the sort of thing a college first-year would dream up.

Ridley Scott says a Blade Runner TV series is in development
Blade Runner director Ridley Scott has confirmed that a TV show based on the sci-fi classic is in the works. The filmmaker also mentioned in an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today that work is progressing on the Alien series.
“We’ve already written the pilot for Blade Runner.. and Alien has now been written for pilot”
Director Ridley Scott, says the Blade Runner and Alien TV shows are in development and they are putting together the ‘bible’ of both projectshttps://t.co/niPYpaHxfG#R4Todaypic.twitter.com/4vTPGyZXtz
— BBC Radio 4 Today (@BBCr4today) November 22, 2021
“We’re already into having written the pilot for Blade Runner, and the bible,” Scott said. “So already presenting Blade Runner as a TV show, which should probably be the first 10 hours, and then Alien is a similar thing. Alien is now being written for pilot.” A bible is a plan that screenwriters or producers put together to detail the world of a TV show beyond what’s in the scripts, including information about the characters and plot.
Scott didn’t provide any insight about who’s involved with the Blade Runner series or how it ties into his movie or the sequel, Blade Runner 2049, which was released in 2017. An anime spinoff, Blade Runner: Black Lotus, debuted on Adult Swim and Crunchyroll this month. In addition, Westwood’s classic 1997 adventure game Blade Runner is being remastered. So, Blade Runner fans have plenty to look forward to.
Meanwhile, the Alien series was announced last December. Noah Hawley — who adapted another popular movie, Fargo, for TV — is the showrunner of the upcoming FX show. The series won’t premiere until at least 2023, unfortunately.

Just because you can do it doesn't mean you should: Install Linux on NTFS – on the same partition as Windows
As alert folks of a cross-platform inclination will have noticed, Paragon’s NTFS driver was accepted into the Linux kernel, and was released as part of 5.15. This has had a consequence they probably didn’t consider, though: you can now boot Linux from an NTFS partition.
